Image: Charr has the power to give Vitali problemsBy Allan Fox: Unbeaten Manuel Charr (21-0, 11 KO’s) isn’t expected to win next month in his fight against WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko (44-2, 40 KO’s) on September 8th at the Olimpiyskiy in Moscow, Russia. On paper, Charr, 6’3″, doesn’t have the experience, speed or the height to trouble the 6’7″, 41-year-old Vitali.

However, what Charr does have in abundance is youth, stamina and a lot of power, and that combination of assets could be enough for him to pull off an upset if Charr can make it past the first six rounds when Vitali is at his best. Charr can improve his chances immensely if he constantly walks Vitali down making sure he lands at least one hard shot for every 20 seconds of each round.

Vitali looked completely warn down from the pressure that Dereck Chisora put on him last February in Munich, Germany, and he was really bothered by Chisora’s occasional big shots that he was landing. Charr is about as hard a puncher as Chisora is, but what makes Charr more of a threat to Vitali than Chisora is that Charr throws straighter punches and he doesn’t need to take as many breaks in between shots as Chisora did.

Charr just keeps coming and is capable of firing big shots over and over again without the need to clinch for rest breaks. Charr is like a big tank, and he’s going to make it tough on Vitali if he’s able to keep coming forward pressuring him.

Vitali isn’t used to pressure, and is definitely not accustomed to his opponents landing many shots. Most of them miss when they try to land head shots against Vitali, because Vitali has a way of leaning away from the punches the same way that Muhammad Ali did in his prime. But if a fighter uses his jab and or stays close to Vitali, he can be hit hard as we saw in his fight against Chisora. Vitali also doesn’t seem to like getting hit in the midsection, and this is an area that Charr can target it he finds it hard to connect with head shots.

If Charr can land enough hard body shots in the first six rounds, he could tire Vitali out and force him to quit on an injury of some sorts. Vitali suffered a shoulder injury in his left shoulder in the Chisora fight, and that problem could flair up again for Vitali if Charr is able to put enough pressure on him. Vitali is like an old car with a lot of miles on it at this point in his career.
