By Jim Dower: 37-year-old former two time WBA super middleweight champion Anthony Mundine (44-4, 26 KO’s) really had his way with smaller Bronco McKart (54-10-1, 32 KO’s) in the 7th round on Saturday night to win the vacant IBF North American middleweight title at the Palms Casino and Resort, Pearl Theater, in Las Vegas, Nevada.

In the 7th, Mundine knocked the 41-year-old McKart down twice to get the stoppage. The first knockdown came from a a big hook that hurt McKart followed by two rights that put him down. McKart got back to his feet looking badly hurt. Mundine then finished him off with a left-right combination that put McKart down for the final time in the fight. The bout was then halted at 2:04 of the 7th round by referee Robert Byrd.

Mundine dominated the other rounds using his huge size and power advantage to dominate the weaker McKart.

McKart was fighting reasonably well through the first three rounds of the fight, landing well to the body and head of Mundine. In the 4th round, the fight turned one-sided as Mundine teed off on McKart, hurting him with combinations and really having his way with him. The fight stayed one-sided through the 5th and 6th rounds as Mundine continued to batter McKart with power shots.

Mundine is hoping to get a shot against Floyd Mayweather and sees himself on course for getting that fight if he can keeping winning. He’s going to have to step it up at some point and start fighting younger and more recognizable opponents if he wants that dream to become reality.

Light heavyweight Cornelius White (20-1, 16 KO’s) ruined whatever little chances that #1 WBO 175 lb contender Dmitry Sukhotsky (18-2, 13 KO’s) at getting a title shot by defeating him by a 12 round unanimous decision. The final judges’ scores were 119-109, 118-110 and 120-108. White, 30, did great job of outworking the Russian Sukhotsky and wearing him down in the later rounds.
