Khan: I will cause Mayweather problems, he’s getting old

Image: Khan: I will cause Mayweather problems, he's getting oldBy Andy Puller: Amir Khan (26-2, 18 KO’s) has always had a problems with looking past his opponents towards future bouts that he feels he’s ready for. This was never been more the case as it is right now with Khan coming of a defeat to Lamont Peterson last December, and now staring at a dangerous unification bout against WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia (23-0, 14 KO’s) on Saturday night at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.

This is a fight that could send Khan’s career crashing down to earth to where it may never recover even with soft matchmaking done by his promoters at Golden Boy. The problem for Khan is instead of putting his entire focus on this fight with Garcia, he’s been talking left and right about wanting to fight Floyd Mayweather Jr. if he beats Garcia. I think this is a big mistake for Khan because judging by his past performance from Peterson the chances are high he’ll lose again on Saturday night unless Khan can score a knockout.

Khan told Sky Sports News “I known Mayweather’s fought other styles and has looked so good against them, but he’s never fought anyone with my style, someone young, hungry, fit and strong who can punch. I know I will cause Mayweather problems. He’s getting older and slower now. It’s the best time to catch him.”

I don’t know about you, but I hate the idea when fighters are excited about facing someone not in the prime of their career. Khan should have tried to fight Mayweather two or three years ago when he was more in his prime instead of waiting to face him now after he’s started to show age in his performances.

Khan would still likely lose because he wouldn’t get enough of the judges to give him a points decision if he were to run around the ring all night long like he did against Peterson. Khan would have to change his fighting style entirely to make it more fan/judge friendly if he wanted to win a decision against Mayweather. He’s not going to knock him out, so it would come down to whether or not he could win a decision against him. I don’t see it happening.
