Image: Fury not interested in David Price bout; wants Adamek nextBy William Mackay: After destroying another older fighter last Saturday night with with a 5th round TKO win over 38-year-old journeyman Vinny Maddalone, undefeated heavyweight contender Tyson Fury (19-0, 14 KO’s) says he’s not ready to fight heavyweight prospect David Price, and wants to wait until one or them are world champions before he’ll take the fight.

Fury said to the Manchester Evening News “I can see it [a fight against Price] happening, but it is another fight that I’ve got nothing to gain from. What will I gain from beating him? Nothing. If one of us won the world title, then it would be a good defense…It deserves to be a big fight.”

Fury also said he’s not interested in fighting the David Haye vs. Dereck Chisora winner. Like the Price fight, Fury doesn’t see anything to gain from fighting either of them because he feels that Haye was already exposed by IBF/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko last year, and he also points out that he already beat Chisora last summer.

The fighter that Fury does want now is 35-year-old former two division world champion Tomasz Adamek, and is hoping to possibly get a fight against him next October when Fury fights next. That’s admirable that Fury wants to fight Adamek next, but not very realistic. Fury won’t get that fight, because Adamek is going to likely continue to work his way back to another title shot by continuing to face safe 2nd tier opposition.

Fury says he has nothing to gain by fighting Price, but the same goes for Adamek in fighting Fury. Fury doesn’t have a title in his possession and he’s not a hugely popular fighter, even in his own country. There’s no plus for Adamek to take that fight. As such, Fury will likely continue to face guys like Martin Rogan and Maddalone until he feels he’s ready to fight one of the Klitschkos. Based on how Fury looked in his win over Maddalone last Saturday night, Fury better wait a few more years before he faces Wladimir, because he looked weak against Maddalone and very easy to hit.

Maddalone didn’t have the reach that Wladimir has, but when he was able to get inside Fury’s reach, he connected at times. Wladimir is much taller than Maddalone, a lot faster and stronger. Fury is gaining nothing by waiting until next year to fight Wladimir, because he won’t have deteriorated enough for Fury to hang with him. If Fury is serious about his dream of wanting to beat the Klitschkos, it honestly might take seven or eight years for Wladimir to age enough to where his power is gone. The power is the last thing to go, and Wladimir will likely still be a huge puncher well into his 40s. The thing is Fury isn’t going to be any stronger than he is now in five or six years, so he’s still going to have huge problems against Wladimir. Fury might as well face Wladimir now and get it over with. Once Fury loses to Wladimir, he can start looking to get a fight against the WBA champ Alexander Povetkin and stop wasting his time talking about wanting to fight the Klitschkos all the time.
