Quillin still looks too flawed to win a title

Image: Quillin still looks too flawed to win a title(Photo: Esther Lin/Showtime) By Dan Ambrose: Unbeaten middleweight contender Peter Quillin (27-0, 20 KO’s) showed that he’s good enough to beat 40-year-old Ronald “Winky” Wright (51-6-1, 25 KO’s) last night by an unimpressive 10 round unanimous decision in Carson, California.

However, there was a lot to dislike about the soon to be 29-year-old Quillin, and you can’t keep calling him a young contender because 29 isn’t exactly young.

Quillin showed little improvement in his past performances regardless of what Showtime analysts said about him. Quillin was still throwing a lot of pot shots, still couldn’t fight on the inside, still had a nasty habit of throwing lunching shots, still lacked the ability to throw combinations, and still was too easy to hit.

He reminded me a lot of a slower, weaker Andre Berto. The power wasn’t there, and his left hand was pretty much useless for Quillin. He doesn’t use his left very much for some reason, and everything comes with his right hand. He did drop the 40-year-old Wright in the 5th round with a right hand, but he had the perfect opponent in front of him. Wright had only fought once in the past five years. He basically was just a sacrificial lamb brought in to make Quillin look good. He didn’t. If you put Quillin in with the best fighters at middleweight like Andy Lee, Dmitriy Pirog, Sergio Martinez and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., he’ll get knocked out. Those guys have much better skills in my view, and have better power as well.

I think Quillin needs to cut his losses with his trainer Freddie Roach and go in a different direction with someone that can try and fix all those gaps in his game before it’s too late. He’s about to turn 29, and soon he’ll be 30, 31, 32 and if he doesn’t get someone that can fix his game he’s going to get taken out once they someday put him in tough.
