Schaefer said this after Trout’s 12 round dominating win over Delvin Rodriguez last Saturday night at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California. Trout, 26, won by the scores of 117-111, 118-110 and 120-108. He threw a lot of punches and made it look easy in beating Rodriguez.

However, the way that Schaefer spoke of Trout didn’t give me a feeling like he’s going to let him face Alvarez. The way he specifically mentioned that he’s the number 2 or 3 possibility suggested that he’s not the one they want to put Alvarez in with. I wouldn’t be surprised because Trout is too skilled and he’d likely beat the 21-year-old Alvarez.

Golden Boy Promotions don’t want to see him get beaten because they’re building him up to be a pay-per-view attraction, and for them to do that they’re going to have to keep him away from talented fighters due to his many flaws. Alvarez is a good fighter but I see him as a number #4 or #5 guy in the division right now. You put him in with Trout, Erislandy Lara, Vanes Martirosyan, and Sergiy Dziziruk, he’ll get beaten badly.

Look for Golden Boy to put Alvarez in with a light hitter like Carlos Molina next, because the only danger with him is that he may try to hug him into submission.
