Image: Maidana won't be fighting Canelo; still scheduled for Thurman fight on 7/21By Allan Fox: Marcos Maidana (31-3, 28 KO’s) has struck out in the Saul “Canelo” Alvarez sweepstakes for a fight on September 15th. There has been talk of Maidana fighting Alvarez next on HBO on 9/15. However, Maidana cleared that rumor up today on his twitter page by saying that he offered to fight Alvarez, but no one contacted him.

Maidana said on his twitter “‏Clarifying rumors. 1 week ago I’ve asked for Canelo Alvarez as a foe since I’ve faith in myself. But Golden Boy never offered it. That’s all. I’m a person who listen to advises. Many told me Canelo is too big for me and I’ve accepted it. End of the story.”

I’m sure that Maidana would have accepted the Canelo fight if Golden Boy Promotions had offered him the fight. It’s the type of fight that you can’t say no to because it would be a big payday for Maidana if he could get the fight. It’s better for Maidana to take a big payday of $600,000 or possibly more for the Alvarez fight than to take less and still lose in his next fight on July 21st against unbeaten welterweight Keith Thurman (17-0, 16 KO’s) at the U.S. Bank Arena, Cincinnati, Ohio, United States.

It still seems like a really dumb move on Maidana’s part to take that fight, because he was just proven to be too small for the welterweight division in his loss to Devon Alexander last February. But now Maidana is facing an even bigger fighter with more power with Thurman. They must have offered Maidana a ton of money for him to face this prospect because it looks like he’s being used as the sacrificial lamb in this fight.
