Image: Chavez Jr. is going to have to take some monstrous shots from Martinez if he wants to winBy Dan Ambrose: There’s nothing that jumped out at you when looking at WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr’s recent win over Andy Lee at the Sun Bowl in El Paso, Texas.

As far as I can tell, the best thing that Chavez Jr. had going for him in that fight was his ability to walk through Lee’s best shots in order to land his own body shots. Chavez Jr. had a big advantage in that fight due to the fight in a small ring, and Lee not having the legs to do the kind of running needed for him to have a chance of winning the fight.

On September 15th, Chavez Jr. will be facing the opposite of Lee in 37-year-old Sergio Martinez at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas, Nevada. Martinez, unlike Lee, has great movement, fast hands and huge power.

Lee had good power, but not the kind of power that Martinez has going for him. If Chavez Jr. is going to try and take Martinez’s shots all night long in order to land his own big shots, we’re likely to see Chavez Jr. transformed into a bloody mess. It doesn’t matter how great Chavez Jr’s chin is.

He can have the greatest chin in the world, but he’ll still likely get cut to ribbons on September 15th if Martinez is able to tee off on Chavez Jr. all night long in this fight. The thing is Chavez Jr. will make it easy for Martinez with his plodding style of fighting. Chavez Jr. lacks the foot and hand speed in order to stand in his tracks and beat Martinez in that kind of fight.

Martinez has looked really powerful in stopping Darren Barker, Paul Willams and Matthew Macklin. Those guys were all tough fighters, yet Martinez chopped them down to size over the course of the fight. His power was that good. Chavez Jr’s trainer Freddie Roach will be working at cutting off the ring, because that’s really only thing Chavez Jr. can do. If Roach has Chavez Jr. working on showing a lot of movement, you can beat that it won’t work. Chavez Jr. doesn’t have the stamina needed for him to move around the ring all night long without gassing out in a big way.
