Brähmer stops Guerrero, Boytsov destroys Wilson, Chakhkiev, Chagaev, Arslan and Menzer also win

By Scott Gilfoid: Tonight’s card in Hamburg, Germany was a rather disappointing one due to the lack of competitive fights from the top to the very bottom of the card. In the main event, former WBO light heavyweight champion Jurgen Brahmer (37-2, 30 KO’s) came back from 21 long months out of the ring to defeat a fighter named Jose Maria Guerrero (29-3-1, 11 Ko’s) by a 4th round TKO at the Grand Elysee.

Okay, that mismatch was understandable since Brahmer hadn’t been in the ring for almost two years, but what’s not understandable is how and why this fight was the main event. That seemed kind of stupid to me. Why put a comeback tune-up fight in the main event? Brahmer probably can’t even win a title even if he’d fighting all this time because the division has improved since he last held the strap briefly in 2010.

Anyway, the bout was a mismatch from the start until the bloody finish in the 4th when Guerrero suffered a cut that caused the fight to be halted. The fight was officially halted at 2:27 of the 4th. Guerrero was knocked down in the 2nd round from a left to the head. I think this fight should have been the first fight of the night and not the main event. It wasn’t worth anything to watch and just sad to see Brahmer looking kind of slow and a little flabby.

Unbeaten cruiserweight prospect Rakhim Chakhkiev (12-0, 9 KO’s) had an easy time against Alexander Kotlobay (21-3-1, 15 KO’s) in a lopsided 10 round unanimous decision. Chakhkiev won by the judges’ scores of 100-89, 100-89 and 99-89.

Chakhkiev battered Kotlobay with punches in close and really worked him over. The fight really needed to be stopped by the 7th, because Chakhkiev was just pummeling the guy and not getting much in return. When Kotlobay would return fire, Chakhkiev would tag him with hooks and uppercuts.

Kotlobay was there to be knocked out but Chakhkiev doesn’t have the huge power that was needed to finish the job, so he had to be satisfied with tagging the guy like he was a punching bag. Overall, terrible mismatch that should have never been made in the first place. Kotlobay is the same guy that Enzo Maccarinelli knocked out in one round.

Undefeated heavyweight contender Denis Boytsov (30-0, 25 KO’s) defeated journeyman Darnell “The Ding-A-Ling Man” Wilson (24-13-3, 20 KO’s) by a 4th round knockout. Still don’t understand why Boytsov has spent so much time during his career stuck on B level opponents. What a waste.

Former WBA heavyweight champion Ruslan Chagaev (28-2-1, 17 KO’s) came into the fight weighing a fat 242lbs and was able to waddle his way to an eight round unanimous decision against Kertson Manswell (22-4, 17 KO’s). Chagaev should have stopped this guy but he looked to be too out of shape to do the job. Chagaev did knock Manswell to the canvas in the 8th but was too out of breath to finish him off.
