Image: Deontay Wilder = The best prospect in the heavyweight divisionBy Scott Gilfoid: 6’7” former 2008 Olympic heavyweight bronze medalist Deontay Wilder (20-0, 20 KO’s) is the textbook version of a one-punch knockout artist and he’s arguably the best heavyweight prospect in boxing in my opinion. Wilder has knocked out all 20 of his opponents with most of the knockouts coming in the first here rounds.

Look at these amazing statistics for Wilder: thirteen 1st round knockouts, four 2nd round knockouts, two 3rd round knockouts and one 4th round knockouts. That’s amazing statistic reminding of someone like the power pitching Nolan Ryan in baseball with his seven no hitters, twelve one-hitters, 18 two-hitters and 5,714 strikeouts. Wilder is knocking people with ease early in his fights and it’s not just because he’s facing light opposition. The man has lethal power in his right hand.

I see Wilder head shoulders above the other top prospects in boxing. Below I’ve listed what I consider the top heavyweight prospects.

David Price – excellent power with both hands, weak chin, and very stiff upper body. Not sure what the problem is with Price with his lack of flexibility but he fights like a robot. He’s not very athletic and he’ll have major problems if he ever gets put in with an athletic monster puncher like Wilder. I can see Price getting destroyed in the 1st round with a single right hand from Wilder.

Tyson Fury – He’s got good size at 6’9” 250lbs, but not much power, and tends to slap a lot to make up for his nonexistent power. Not much of a chin as we’ve seen lately with Fury getting staggered by Chisora, hurt by 2nd tier fighter Nicolai Firtha and knocked down by the light hitting Neven Pajkic. That kind of tells you all you need to know about Fury and his limitations. Wilder would likely knock Fury out in the 1st round as well. I would think that Fury might make it to the 2nd round due to his huge size, but he doesn’t have any defense and he doesn’t use his height and reach to his advantage for some reason. But the worst problem I see with Fury is his glass jaw. He just can’t take a punch with staggering and having to hold on for dear life.

Seth Mitchell – This guy is too slow, too short and too weak. He can punch a little but he’s not a huge puncher and is pretty raw. Wilder is still kind of sloppy as well, but he’s got that cannon of a right hand that he can land with devastating power even when he’s off balance and that makes up for his lack of technical abilities. Mitchell wouldn’t last more than three rounds against Wilder at best. Mitchell would be in trouble in every round until finally getting blasted out in the third.

Dereck Chisora – This would be much too easy for Wilder, because Chisora is more like 6-foot than 6’2”, and not very fast and utterly hittable. The thing is if Wilder hits you, it’s all over. Chisora would be like Joe Frazier to George Foreman. Wilder would have a field day landing right hands to the chin of Chisora and I think this would be over in a couple of rounds.
