Image: Ortiz has the desire but lacks the talent needed to beat MayweatherBy Chris Williams: It makes for a good story to see Victor Ortiz’s early life getting a lot of discussion on HBO’s Mayweather-Ortiz 24/7 episodes. Ortiz claims that his poor background is going to drive him to victory against Floyd Mayweather Jr. on September 17th.

If it were only that easy we’d have champions emerging left and right because America has always had a lot of poor people who have taken up boxing. But it doesn’t mean that because you were poor in the past that you can beat Mayweather. That’s just not going to happen.

If Mayweather Jr. is going to lose to someone it’s going to be against someone with more talent than him, not just someone who came from a poorer background. Ortiz isn’t as good as Mayweather, and there’s nothing he can do about that.

It’s kind of sad to see Ortiz talking about how he doesn’t feel emotions like fear. It’s such a sad pose because everyone feels fear, and he just comes accross as a fighter that’s not honest with himself. Mayweather Jr. is going to beat Ortiz on September 17th, and it won’t matter how poor Ortiz was or how brave he is, he’s going to lose. That’s just the way it is.

Ortiz thinks he can beat Mayweather on will power alone in this fight. That’s not going to work because for Ortiz to win this fight, he’s going to have to take an enormous amount of punishment over a long period of time, and the referee isn’t going to just stand back and let Ortiz take that punishment without stepping in and stopping the fight.

If this was hte 50s, then I can see Ortiz being able to stay out there until he was black and blue. But not now. Boxing has too many safety rules, and a ringside doctor is going to pull the trigger on the fight if Ortiz gets too beaten up.
