McCloskey: I will beat the guy [Prescott] that beat Khan

Image: McCloskey: I will beat the guy [Prescott] that beat KhanBy Scott Gilfoid: Ireland’s Paul McCloskey (22-1, 12 KO’s) has a near hopeless dream of getting back in there with WBA Super World light welterweight champion Amir Khan for a second chance against him by beating Breidis Prescott (24-2, 19 KO’s) this coming Saturday on September 10th, at the Odyssey Arena in Belfast, Northern Ireland. I see a lot of pain for McCloskey on Saturday, with him lying on the canvas wondering what hit him.

Speaking with The Daily Star, McCloskey said “Khan is in a corner at the moment. He’s looking for a big fight but there aren’t many out there at the moment. I think the fight with me could happen and I would love the opportunity to avenge the last fight, because of the way it ended. But I will beat the boy [Prescott] who knocked Amir out and then we will see what he has to say.”

It sounds pretty sick and hopeless to me. McCloskey needs to put a sock in it, and come back down to earth because he sounds more than a little deluded. I just he doesn’t babbling around wanting to take on Floyd Mayweather Jr. next. That’s all we need – another fighter saying how he deserves to be in with Mayweather based on nothing wins.

McCloskey, 31, is thinking that Khan will change his mind about not wanting to fight him again if he somehow is able to beat Prescott, the only fighter to defeat Khan. However, the problem is that even if McCloskey is able to create a miracle and defeat Khan, he still likely won’t get Khan to change his mind about not wanting to fight him again.

If McCloskey defeats Prescott, it will probably be one of those home town decisions where McCloskey will only get credit from his Irish and British fans, while the boxing fans outside of the UK cry foul. Khan certainly won’t want to get mixed up in fighting McCloskey off of a controversial victory. That would make Khan look like a cherry picker, and he’s not going to take that fight. And really other than winning a fight by a controversial hometown decision, that’s the only way I see McCloskey beating a slugger like Prescott. McCloskey is too weak, too slow and too defensively focused to beat an offensive machine like Prescott, unless it’s by one of those deeply controversial hometown type decisions as far as I’m concerned.

The McCloskey-Prescott is about as big a mismatch as you’ll ever see. Prescott is way too good for the weak punching McCloskey. I just hope that Prescott knocks the guy out because I can see Prescott totally dominating the guy, knocked him down five or six times and still losing.
