Khan still hasn’t agreed to fight Jessie Vargas; fight with Mayweather could be a nonstarter

Image: Khan still hasn't agreed to fight Jessie Vargas; fight with Mayweather could be a nonstarterBy William Mackay: Unbeaten WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. (42-0, 26 KO’s) has repeatedly let IBF/WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan (26-1, 18 KO’s) know what he has to do in order to get a fight with him, but it looks as if Khan has no interest in following Mayweather’s directions of fighting the hard hitting fringe contender Jessie Vargas (17-0, 9 KO’s).

Mayweather said he’ll fight Khan if he first fights his guy Jessie Vargas. However, instead of following Mayweather’s directions to the letter, Khan has stubbornly decided to take on his mandatory IBF contender Lamont Peterson (29-1-1, 15 KO’s) on December 10th in Washington, DC. That’s probably the equivalent of Khan facing Paul McCloskey in terms of facing a guy without much power and without a big fan base in the U.S.

I don’t know about you, but I think Khan really blew it by taking this fight. If Mayweather is the guy that Khan is squawking about 24/7, then why isn’t he doing what Mayweather asks by fighting his guy first in order to get the fight with him?

The thing is it’s no skin of Mayweather’s teeth whether he fights Khan or not because the guy isn’t a huge star in the U.S and may never be unless he steps it up a couple levels and starts fighting guys that can actually test him like Breidis Prescott, Lucas Matthysse and Marcos Maidana at light welterweight instead of guys without much power. And if Khan moves up to welterweights, he’s not going to become a huge star fighting guys like Shane Mosley, Kell Brook and Vyacheslav Senchenko, fighters that Khan will likely be steered towards after he moves up.

I don’t know why Khan is so resistant to doing what Mayweather asks him to do? Maybe Khan is just namedropping Mayweather’s name to get popular without actually having to fight him? After all, if a guy has given you the roadmap to get a fight with him and you completely ignore it what are you suppose to think?

Khan said this on his twitter today: “Hahaha. I bet my brother HarrykingKhan will beat Jessie Vargas. I can’t believe Floyd Mayweather said he’ll beat me.”

It’s sad how Khan is fighting Mayweather’s instructions instead of following them. This reminds me of how Manny Pacquiao isn’t helping himself get a fight with Mayweather by failing to take the tests that Mayweather wants him to before he’ll agree to fight him. Maybe Khan never really did want the Mayweather fight?
