Image: Erik Morales' replacement opponent down to three candidatesBy Dan Ambrose: Richard Schaefer of Golden Boy Promotions has reportedly narrowed down the list of potential replacement’s to face Erik Morales to three for the September 17th fight on the undercard of the Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Victor Ortzi fight at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Morales and Golden Boy are looking for a replacement for Lucas Matthysse, who pulled out of his fight with Morales due to a bad viral infection. With little a little over a week to go before the 17th, Schaefer is searching long and hard for a suitable replacement opponent and has narrowed it down to three candidates, although he’s not willing to say who they are at this time.

One of them is already known, however, and that’s Anthony Crolla (21-2, 9 KO’s) of Britain. Crolla, 24, was already scheduled to fight on the undercard of the 17th fight against Juan Montiel (5-4-3, 2 KO’s). Crolla has an exciting fighting style, which is why he was picked out by Golden Boy Promotions to fight on the card. However, he’s totally inexperienced at this point of his five-year pro career and isn’t even a light welterweight, as he fights at lightweight.

Crolla is supposedly the opponent of last resort for Morales. However, given that he’s even being considered in the first place to be fighting against Morales for the vacant WBA light welterweight belt suggests that Golden Boy may settle for a less than impressive opponent for Morales to fight. That’s all well and good if the WBC title isn’t on the line, but it probably will be on the line. That makes Morales kind of a joke if he wins a title against someone that doesn’t even deserve to be fighting for a strap.
