Erik Morales interested in rematch with Maidana next March

Image: Erik Morales interested in rematch with Maidana next MarchBy William Mackay: I’m sure IBF/WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan was wincing at Saturday’s press conference between the new WBC light welterweight champion Erik Morales (52-7, 36 KO’s) and Pablo Cesar Cano, who Morales defeated by a 10th round retirement on the undercard of Floyd Mayweather Jr. – Victor Ortiz at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Morales, 35, captured the vacant WBC belt with a strong second half surge to bust up and stop the young 21-year-old Cano.

After the fight, Morales was asked if he’s interested in a rematch with WBA light welterweight champion Marcos Maidana for December, and Morales said not for December because of a cut he sustained in the fight with Cano, but instead would be interested in fighting him again in March.

Khan probably didn’t like this news, because he and his Golden Boy promoters want to fight Morales. However, Morales is still looking to avenge his 12 round split decision loss to Maidana from last April and that’s the fight he seems more interested in. Morales already declined a fight with Khan recently, and it looks like Khan is going to have to wait a little while longer until after Morales faces Maidana in March before Khan gets a crack at him.

With Khan moving up in weight to the welterweight division, I have serious doubts that Khan will ever get a fight against Morales. He can’t afford to wait, because Khan needs to start fighting at welterweight so he can get acclimated to the new division to prepare himself for his cash fight against Mayweather.

Khan won’t help himself if he’s chasing 35-year-old fighters like Morales because Morales is a pumped up light welterweight and not a true one. As we saw in his fight against the limited Cano, Morales doesn’t have much power at this weight class and has to win by landing a lot of punches. It’s no surprise then that Morales is more interested in the slower punching slugger Maidana than a fighter like Khan that runs around the ring mostly jabbing all night. It’s not a style that Morales is accustomed and not one he would do well against.
