Sky hasn’t abandoned boxing, as they’ll continue to show boxing on regular Sky Sports channel.

This is a good thing and a bad thing. The good thing for the fighters is that they’ll have a chance to be seen by many more fans than they would otherwise if their fights get put on PPV in order for them to get a payday.

The bad thing is it could hurt some of the fighters that have been used to using Sky PPV for their paydays. However, Primetime PPV will obviously be the outlet for these fighters now, such as Amir Khan, possibly David Haye, and Carl Froch.

It’s unclear what specifically has caused Sky to abandon showing boxing on PPV, but you have to imagine the mismatches that Haye had with the likes of John Ruiz, Audley Harrison, and his disappointing performance against Wladimir Klitschko may have had something to do with Sky wanting to go from PPV to regular television for boxing. Amir Khan’s mismatches also might have had something to do with this as well.

A senior source with Sky said this to the Daily Express: “We spend too much time trying to do deals on boxing for a limited return and do not think it’s fair on our audience to ask them to pay more for boxing. This is not to say that we’ll never return to pay-per-view. It’s just not right for us at the moment.”

It looks like Sky hasn’t been making that much of a return for the work they’re putting in by showing some of these fights. It’s likely that the fighters are getting a huge chunk of the profits in these terrible mismatches that have been shown recently. It’s the fans’s fault for purchasing and therefore enabling these fighters by purchasing their mismatches.

Come on, Haye-Harrison was a mismatch going in and pretty much everyone knew it was. The same goes for Khan’s fight against Dmitri Salita. Fans still purchased both fights and got very little entertainment for their money. With the fighters routinely being set up in PPV mismatches, it’s not likely much will change in the future. It’ll just be Primetime showing the mismatches instead of Sky.
