By Jim Dower: Former International Boxing Federation (IBF) welterweight champion Kermit Cintron (34-4-1, 28 KO’s) dodged a bullet tonight in winning a very controversial 10 round unanimous decision against fringe contender Antwone Smith (20-3-1, 12 KO’s) b the lopsided scores of 98-92, 97-93 and 96-94 at the Ameristar Casino in Saint Charles, Missouri.

Although Cintron got the win, he actually appeared to lose the fight by at least two rounds on my card. Cintron looked totally shot, getting outworked on the inside, throwing a lot of weak shots and looking terrible throughout.

I’m sure he’ll take a win any way he can get it at this point in his career, as the win breaks up his two fight losing streak and keeps him as a fringe player in the welterweight and junior middleweight divisions. However, for anyone to think that Cintron has a chance of capturing another title again the current group of champions in either division, they need to sit down and have a good cup of strong coffee. Cintron doesn’t look anything like he used to, and it was sad to see him getting dominated by a fringe welterweight contender like Smith.

In other action on the card, lightweight contender Dannie Williams (19-1, 15 KO’s) stopped Antonio Cervantes (16-6-5, 11 KO’s) in the 4th round. Williams, ranked No.13 in the World Boxing Council lightweight division, tagged Cervantes with a powerful left hand in the opening round to put him on the canvas. And in the 4th, Williams finished the job right a beautiful right hand to get a knockdown and the knockout.
