De La Hoya: Angulo wants Martirosyan in December

By Dan Ambrose: Oscar De La Hoya of Golden Boy Promotions is very excited about junior middleweight contender Alfredo Angulo (20-1, 17 KO’s), who De La Hoya and Golden Boy just signed. In his first fight for his new promoters, Angulo destroyed Joseph Gomez by a 1st round knockout last Saturday night in Mexico.

De La Hoya enjoyed the fight now wants to match the No.2 ranked WBC contender Angulo with the No.1 contender Vanes Martirosyan (30-0, 19 KO’s) in December in a WBC junior middleweight title eliminator with the winner to face WBC champion Saul Alvarez next year.

“Angulo did not only bark last night, he knocked out his opponent,” De La Hoya said on his twitter social media site. “Perro Angulo wants Vanes next in December from Mexico…Angulo looked in great shape and hasn’t lost a step. Bring on Vanes in Mexico.”

I beg to differ. Angulo looked slow, very hittable and not good on his feet. I think Martirosyan is going to easily outbox Angulo. He’s too limited and Martirosyan will do exactly what Kermit Cintron did to Angulo two years ago by out-boxing him and making him look really bad. I think Saul Alvarez would beat Angulo even easier. I think De La Hoya was too late in signing Angulo. He needed to sign him two years ago and push him into fighting for one of the lesser titles in the junior middleweight division. Angulo would likely have won a title and of course lost it now that the division has gotten good. But now I think it’s too late for Angulo. He’ll get beat by Martirosyan and especially by Alvarez.
