HBO to offer Maidana the Alexander-Bradley loser

By Dan Ambrose: If Marcos Maidana (29-2, 27 KO’s) is interested in getting a fight on the HBO network, Maidana will get a shot against the loser of Saturday’s bout between WBC light welterweight champion Devon Alexander vs. WBO light welterweight champion Timothy Bradley. Maidana, 28, may not be pleased at having to fight the loser of that fight instead of the winner, but he might be wise to take the fight if HBO offers it to him because they reportedly are looking to have Maidana fight the loser if this bout in way of having a tournament-like elimination process.

Maidana will get the benefit of fighting in front of a lot of boxing fans and will likely be getting a partially depleted Bradley or Alexander for the fight. It’s a match-up that will be a tough one for Maidana, because he’s not blessed with a lot of foot and hand speed, and he’ll have problems trying to catch up to these quicker fighters.

At the same time, Maidana is going to have to fight better in the early rounds of the bout and not wait until the 2nd half of the fight to start finding success. Maidana struggled in his last fight against WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khanin the first part of the bout, having a hard time landing shots against the constantly moving Khan. However, in the 2nd half of the fight, his pressure and power began to take over the fight. The judges still continue to count Khan’s flurries in scoring the rounds, but the more telling shots were landed by Maidana in the 2nd half of the bout. Maidana will have to put a lot more pressure on Bradley or Alexander if he wants to avoid losing again.

Maidana can always say no to fighting the loser of the bout and hope that he can get a better fight against perhaps the winner of the Zab Judah vs. Kaizer Mabuza fight. That might be a better option for Maidana because at least he would be fighting for a title instead of taking on a diminished loser.

  • Julio says:

Hahah yeah I think I went I little over board with the little girl thing hahaha

  • Zar says:

    @ Julio.
You seem to have a strange fascination with little girls.

  • Vladimir says:

LOL i didn’t know that black fighters are the cream of the crop of boxing. Wow Roach will never fete his fighters against blacks? You got to have a brain of a rat to think that way.

  • julio says:

WELL DESERVE MAIDAINA !! hes not like tha little girl khan! talking to much busht!! fight prescot little girl he put you to sleep like the little girl you are!!

  • Evil Scotsman says:

Why doesn’t Khan just wait to see the outcome of tonights fight and fight the winner of that on April 30th instead of fighting someone that nobody cares about? If he chose to fight McCloskey or Murray then i’m guessing that the Bradley-Alexander winner will take a fight in the summer probably against Judah/Mabuza meaning Khan won’t fight them til the end of the year. Maidana should get the loser of Bradley-Alexander and the event could be called ‘LOSERS’

  • Pain Language says:

Mabuza Vs Maidana. Khan is a good fighter but he will duck the winner of Alex/Brad. He is a Roach fighter. He wont fight any black fighters at there peak. Mayweather has had 15 Championship fights in 12 years. Khan has had 3. Khan is a good fighter but Floyd is great. Stop saying Khan and Mayweather in the same sentence. The Brit fighter that should get any props is The Cobra Karl Froch. Khan just like Ricky Hatton is over hyped and will get KO’d on the big stage. Who is Khan fighting next? He fought a while ago. He should be fighting 3 to 4 times a year. Khan is garbage truck juice until he keeps a championship fighters schedule.

That is good foresight, and good fight whichever one wins.

  • the man says:

alexander to beat bradley tonight and a win against khan when they meet . . .remember this from the man

  • Dogs pudin says:

Khan will never beat mayweather if you think that you must be smoking crack.

  • bri says:

@fair but firm **** for the next two years why floyd is still at his peak no one will even comtetatively compete with floyd. ill let you all have manny. but no one else is even close. personally i think he will destroy manny even on that juice but we will never see it so lets leave that alone. hopefully we see him face the winner of alexander bradley, berto or martinez end of this year.

  • bri says:

@Guybino **** how exactly do you become the best at 140 without facin the best at 140?????

  • William says:

    @fair but firm

Are you smoking crack…..Khan isnt even in the same league as Mayweather….thats as ridiculous as saying Khan going to unmask Batman

  • fair but firm says:

khan will beat mayweather by brutal ko

  • Guybino says:

I think Maidana would be too much for Alexander, not sure about Bradley though. Khan to be top 140 by the end of 2011

  • Anonymous says:

maidana needs to train with sergo martinez camp!!

  • William says:

I wish Edwin Valero was still around to knock all these guys out

  • sorren says:

@ clint- did you even read the article lol. where does it say he should fight the winner?

  • Boxing-Fan says:

Thats a fair deal for Maidana fighting the loser…Khan will beat the winner of Bradley/Alexander&will unify the 140 division…

  • A.J says:

khan will take on the winner and i hope maidana takes on the loser if the loser doesnt avoid him.

  • elgato says:

Khan has problems against all good fighters. And he will have to start planting his feet to keep people off of him. He will lose against a lot of people around his weight class. His chin will betray him.

  • elgato says:

Maidana is slow and unpolished. I mean he somehow gets to people. My guess is he won’t touch the best boxers like Bradley, but everyone else is a great fight.

  • Pete says:

Tonights showdown will tell us all what we want to know… we get to see both Bradley and Alexander against a world class boxer.

However, regardless of what happens I do not see them beating Khan. To be honest I think they would both have trouble beating Maidana.

Top guy in this division is Khan – no doubt – he is the one to beat.

Second is Maidana – He beat Ortiz and did very well against Khan – I wonder if tonights fighers could beat him?

Third is Bradley – I have no idea what he is doing in the P4P Top Ten – I really don’t.

Alexander comes up fourth but win tonight and he is second. Perhaps Maidana should be fourth but I simply do not see anyone other then Khan beating Maidana.

  • Michael says:

It’s a real shame that Maidana was brushed off so easily against Khan…. In reality Maidana was the more impressive one even though he lost the fight– I honestly don’t see Khan doing too much in the future, because even though he’s fast, he never really backed up Maidana or for that matter has never really KO’d a fighter. Maidana in the other hand, with a stronger corner, with the promoters on his side and not a bias ref in the ring, he could take the boxing world by storm.

  • Taz says:

Khan vs the winner and the loser vs maidana that would be a great card and great ppv numbers, and have Ortiz fight the winner of the loser vs maidana great match up’s, and the winner of khan vs winner a/b!!! Fight zab Judah for the ibf belt?

  • Lapu Lapu says:

The winner has to fight Amir Khan for the Ring Title. A Khan/winner and Maidana/loser will be good match up and if they can put it on the same card. This would be HBO answer to improve his PPV sales without Pacquiao or Mayweather.

  • Uncle Tom says:

Maidana will beat the hell out of either Bradley or Alexander if that happens.

  • arroyo bob says:

hbo knows neither one of these 2 are draws. The relatively unknown Maidana is. Whoever gets him should be thankful for a decent payday, and watch for the overhand right.

  • hinduw says:

The winner of Zab vs the African is better in his career than Alexander or Bradley? wtf?

  • bri says:

@Punchy Potorff **** u must be out of your mind. alexander and bradley too talented for maidana he couldnt even beat khan. all that power didnt mean much vs khan and khan doesnt have half the skill of alexander or bradley.

  • moneymay says:

Man i hope he takes it, it will add to the informal junior welter weight tourny. It would be a good fight and the winner of that could possibly fight the loser of Khan vs Alex/bradley etc. Then winner of Zab and Mabuzu could fight the loser of Khan Maidana or something, and the winners keep advancing up the ladder

  • Punchy Potorff says:

I would imagine Alexander will win a UD against Bradley… but whether it’s him or Bradley… either would lose to Maidana. Marcos is just too tough for even the slickest of boxers. He’s a relentless warrior. And of course we all know Khan is scared to fight Maidana again.

  • Poncho says:

I don’t think Khan takes on the winner. He is too unpolished and I doesn’t want lose.

  • lefty says:

Naidana is a threat in this division

  • bri says:

cant expect to take on the winner when he just lost to khan. khan should take on the winner. hbo will probably push for it. maidana should take bout vs loser . he would still be facin the secound best boxer in the devision.
