By Leo Kapakos: Here we go again? Current UFC fighter Vitor Belfort wants to fight James Toney in a boxing match. In a twitter message to UFC President Dana White, Belfort tweets “Dana let me fight James Tony on 6 round boxe Mach I think I can catch him with my speed.” “Dana will be the 1 boxing match in Ufc I promise he will feel my power and we will show the world the a Ufc fighter can do better.” Toney’s response to the challenge, Tell Vitor Belfort let’s make it happen. I like that because he ain’t no scared little bitch. He wants to come to my world and I’m more than willing to welcome him to my world.
While Toney hopes to save face after a humiliating loss to Randy Coture there are a number of reasons why this fight in all likelihood will never happen. Belfort is under contract with UFC and President Dana White commented after UFC 118 that he’s through with the Boxer vs. MMA matches. Moreover, White is hardly going to let one of his fighters potentially get hurt in the ring and in the process embarrass the UFC. Above all, there is no cash in it for Dana and Zuffa, and they have shown no interest in ever cross-promoting an event let alone a boxing event. It’s too bad though, this fight would have more interesting then the Coture fight. Belfort is probably one of the best boxers in the UFC and known for his quick hands and power. That said however, the ring is Toney’s home and he’s been hit by bigger, faster, and stronger fighters throughout his career- the likes of Holyfield, Rahman, Peters, Jirov. So I’d have to make James Toney the heavy favorite in a fight that is probably never going to happen. Too bad- would have liked to have seen that one.
Lets stand and trade like all fights happen in real life hooray! BS MMA fighters will win every time
@Phoocquiao I respect ur respect for jones junior, but he fell a apart… Toney in Boxing is still going strong, He won the first fight against Peter’s no matter how bad they wanted Peter’s to win, everyone knows he won that fight, the second fight, you can still argue for Toney, other than those two bullit losses he hasn’t lost in 13 years!!! & no one significant want to fight him cuz they afraid he will take it serious. He need to come out to ” 50 Cent ‘ They Burn Me”
… cuz thats what they tryin to do to James Lights out Toney, listen to that song ” 50 Cent – They Burn Me” & tell me thats not what they are doing to James Toney.!!!
Let Randy Couture show some B@LLS and return the favour with a boxing match. I think a 5 rd match would be fair.
yesir Leo’s right -look at the guys Toney’s fought- look at what he did to Holyfield! This is a one-sided fight no-doubt- on Toney’s side.
James would not only beat the tar out of Vitor but also embarrass him as bad as Toney was!
LET’S MAKE THIS HAPPEN…IT’S ONLY FAIR THAT ONE OF THOSE MMA GUYS STEP UP NOW! I WOULD PREFER COULTURE SO TONEY CAN EVEN IT UP WITH HIM BUT WHATEVER…A SACRAFICAL LAMB IS A SACRIFICAL LAMB RIGHT?! LOL
Phoocquiao says:
“Maybe boxing can steal some of MMA’s Heavy’s to reignite the dying heavyweight division. A lot of those heavies could benefit from some 12 round boxing sparring and training (ahem Shane Carwin)”
You’re absolutely right- the heavyweight boxing division needs some excitement real bad. I don’t think it would happen but it would be great to see some of the better MMA strikers make the crossover to boxing- could spark some interest. I think that Andrei Arlovski- who has trained with Freddie Roach is a great candidate. Fedor maybe- a little flat-footed but he could work on that. If Anderson Silva could move up in weight-he’s got some boxing skills and could be a possibility.
Exciting heavyweight fights are long gone. Klitschkos -technically sound but stiff and boring to watch. You have Adamek moving up in weight and David Hayes who are both good fighters but don’t expect anything too exciting. I grew up on Ali, Frazier, Foreman, Tyson, Lewis– and I only wish there was a way to go back in time and bring some of those fighters back.
Oh and the only way GSP is going, is up, hopefully to fight Anderson.
Dont even mention Mayweather and MMA, he already sh*t it from Sean Sherk, talk about a climb down!
GSP probably weighs about 175-180 come fight night anyway, Floyd aint makin that.
Good point.
Logistically Manny would be out of the question at that weight.
Perhaps GSP – Arthur Abraham?
I’m sure that for the right money GSP and Mayweather can settle on a catch-weight of some kind or even fight at middle/super middle. May does fight at 147 but you can tell that he can put way more weight on his frame than Pacquiao.
GSP vs. Manny or Maywether- at what weight? GSP fights at 170 right- he would have to go down to 150 to fight one of these guys? Maywether fights at 147.
GSP would destroy Mayweather.
No boxer can beat GSP in an MMA fight.
GSP – Pac would be a better boxing match cause GSP kinda has a caution style similar to Mayweather. GSP – May would be a boring fight to which May would pull out the decision.
Best match would be Mayweather vs. GSP.
I don’t think you can call those three minutes “work”. Maybe “worked over” but not “work”
rite ok its been pointed out enough now that vitor isnt the champion, yis dont av 2 keep sayin it.the best boxer wud av a gud argument in the ufc in his own weight class, but unfortunately the best ufc fighter (anderson silva) already fought a boxing match n got ko,d by an unknown brazilian fighter, unknown 2 even de biggest of boxing fans cos he never fought outside s.america n lost almost half his fights,
YOU KEEP HATEIN ON TONEY!!HE LAUGHIN ALL THE WAY TO THE BANK- $500,000 FOR 3 MINUTES OF WORK lololol
Toney is just a fat cow
JAMES TONEY WILL CRUSH HIM!!!! 2 DIFFERENT SPORTS!
Boxing is borring for the money u pay to watch one half decent fight aint worth it. as far as boxing vs mma the only tru test would be loud mouth mayweather vs anyone smaller then him ( cause we all know he wont fight anyone his size) in ufc that would be a mayweather fight i would acuctualy pay for. Boxing when it comes to mma dosent stand a chance as a boxer you are putting all your hopes that you can catch the guy with your best punch, what happens when he grabs you in a muay thai clinch and throws knees at your face and body, you realyb think your jab or 1,3,2 combo his going to work. not boxing is dead long live MMA!!!!! BI$&Hs
Sorry guys- my mistake. I thought I read that Vito was the current UFC Light Heavyweight Champ- should have verified.
In any event, I agree with “Fighter” below- if you’re going to do this MMA vs. Boxing thing right – and I’m still not convinced it’s going to really prove anything- you need to have two of the best fighters from both sports in their prime fighting in both environments. That said, I think James Toney vs. Vitor Belfort-who has fast hands and can box would be alot of fun to watch- even though Toney doesn’t represent the very best in boxing right now. Toney/Belfort would even be a better fight then say Toney versus Shogun Rua – who by the way is the “CURRENT” UFC Light Heavyweight Champion ……
y du neeeegros get so much money wen they should be in cages
BOXING RULES!!
MMA SUCKS!!!!
MMA Rules
Boxing SUCKS
James Toney is a fat ignorant mass. I never liked him. He does not represent the sport of boxing, and is a disgraced juicer anyway. He’s an opportunist, who was able to be used one more time.
Lightsout Toney has WAY too much experience to get beat by any MMA fighter in the ring..don’t care who it is..
Bet Toney can fight Rua and Vitor the same night and KO both of them .
THEN HAVE SHOGUN -WHOEVER THE F%$%$ THE UFC LIGHTHEAVYWEIGHT CHAMP FIGHT TONEY!!!!!ALL PUSS&^%&^
The author is obviously a boxing fan but should get up to speed on the the current ufc standings. He’s right though-that fight ain’t happening!
Shogun Rua is the reigning light heavyweight champion. Vitor won the title because of a cut in 2004 and immediately lost it in the rematch to Randy Couture. You should get your facts straight. It doesn’t make this site seem very credible.
one would have to be a complete idiot to buy into that.
James Toney is a fat whale and doesnt represent boxing at all. Its a joke to pit him against anybody and say that is a real test.
This could be a way to combine the sports, and set up a twice a year event, where boxing, and MMa get togeter for a tourney, where each pits it’s bets against eachother. Just 1ce or 2x a year. The ratings would be through the roof. And after the boxers school the MMA’ers, then Dana white can take his fortune (cause MMA’ers get paid p-nuts for the abuse they take, and he can go eat all the doghnuts, and zepolies he wants.
@ Ginkster. If I had to have one skill, I’d take boxing, but what happens if you miss? You better have KO power too. These days, as soon as somebody see’s you got some hands, they wanna run in and grab you, and try and muscle you up. I’ts nice to know how to handle that if things should get uncivilized, which is fine by me. An elbow placed correctly will open his face up, or a knee will drop him down, and give you space to finish with the hands.
But overall, boxing is the best. Look at MMA; You could have a guy who’s 20-1, and another who’s 9-8, and the bumb could submitt the other guy. That’s like somebody from Friday nite Fights, stepping up, and beating Floyd, or P Williams, or Marquez. Highly unlikely.
That fight aint hapenin but if it did it’s a “pik’em”- you got a great MMA fighter/boxer in his prime going up against a cagey but over-the-hill veteran..tough to call..
Totally agree with “Fighter” below..except for the streetfight part. In a street fight, a good boxer catches you first- oh oh!
Does nobody see this whole James Toney thing as a bit unfair. I mean everybody is talking about a MMA vs Boxing situation, but let’s make it fair. James Toney was B fighter. He was not the best during his prime, which was over ten years ago. So to ask him to be the face of boxing, against hall of fame fighters, or young guys who fight consistantly throught the year in MMA, is a little cowardly. Kind of like calling yourself a world beater, for besting a geriatric. I don’t know about any of you, but where I’m from, you get no stripes for beating up a cripple, or a lady, or the likes. For this conversation to be real, we need to take boxing’s best, and MMA’s best. We need to have them train for a predetermined amount of time, and have them each fight in both enviornments. We can’t have a retiree, fighting a hall of famer, from EITHER side.
My personal opinion on the matter is one of respect. I believe MMA is best for street purposes, but Boxing is more of a developed science. I believe that a good boxer can learn takedown defense, a few defenses from guard, leg kicks, and so-on, and be very effective in MMA. A BJJ guy, however, cannot come into the boxing ring, and do as well. I’m sorry, just the way I see it.
pipedreams..UFC will never ever co-promote with anybody!!!
Why the hell would Vitor want this fight? ridiculous- doesn’t need it..
Vitor has shown he has speed and power even at 205and can outpoint Toney in the ring!
Vitor was indeed faster and much quicker than toney but I don’t think vitor was experienced enought to fight toney on a boxing match.
TAKE NOTE: VITOR WAS CURRENTLY FIGHTING IN MIDDLEWEIGHT AND HE’S NOT THE LHW CHAMPION.
Vitor used to be the Light heavy weigthchamp and would have to meet tony at leats 205 – would be great fight!
Vitor is really know joke when it comes to striking. In the squared circle, Toney would be too crafty. In the Octagan, it would be anybodies guess.
How about a boxing match in the Octagon (using MMA gloves, etc)?
A “wikipedia” mistake? It says he’s the UFC Light heavyweight champ..
He’s not the champ you dumb asssssssssssssssssss
dont matter -middleweight, lightheavyweight Toney will smash him!
very poor to get such a massive fact wrong in your opening statement. Shows a complete lack of competence as a writer.
Vitor Belfort the current Light Heavyweight Champion????? “Shogun” Rua is the champ & Vitor fights in the middleweight division
