Roach says Pacquiao will fight Clottey from the outside
By Dave Lahr: Trainer Freddie Roach is wary of his fighter Manny Pacquiao getting hit with head butts and uppercuts from challenger Joshua Clottey, and to prevent from Pacquiao getting hit with either, Roach says he’s going to have Pacquiao fight from the outside. In an article at TVNZ, Roach says “Sometimes he [Clottey] uses his head. If you fall into the pocket with him, his best punch is an uppercut and his second best punch is a head butt. So we’re not going to go in there.
Besides that, Pacquiao never fights anyone from the outside. He always fights them in close. And Clottey doesn’t always use his head. In only one fight, his bout against Carlos Baldomir years ago did Clottey accidently bump heads with Baldomir a number of times. But if Roach believes that Pacquiao is going to be in danger if he gets too close to Clottey, then the better for Clottey.
Pacquiao won’t be able to land from the outside because his arms are too short and he’s finally fighting a real welterweight instead of a short one like Miguel Cotto and Ricky Hatton. This time, Pacquiao has to deal with a fighter who has the arm length, the strength and the frame of a legitimate welterweight. And it sounds like Roach is worried about it. He should be.
If Clottey beats Pacquiao, and beats him decisively, it’s egg on Roach’s face and it could slow down the gravy train. Pacquiao would still make a ton of money in a rematch with Clottey, but it could be the beginning of the end if Clottey puts a real whipping on Pacquiao and beats him especially bad like I think he might do.
Pacquiao is hoping that his hand speed with be the factor in him beating Clottey on Saturday night. “My quickness will be the key, my speed.” I don’t think so. You can’t always win with just hand speed. Clottey hits harder, is bigger than Pacquiao and will want it more than him. Pacquiao may have the quickness, but he won’t have the size or the same desire at Clottey to win the fight.
Clottey needs this win, because he’s not rich like Pacquiao and won’t be unless he can capture Pacquiao’s title with a sensational win. Speed will help Pacquiao up to a point, but if he’s not landing because his shots are being picked off by Clottey, then I can see Pacquiao getting worn down. Clottey will go after him with power shots and walk Pacquiao down and batter him.

i love and respect ALL BOXERS…whtever their race or religion.most of these guys came from dirt poor families,or no families at all…be it from the hoods of america, the slums of the philippines or the jungles of ghana…these fighters deserve some respect,…and it riles me when sam so called fans of one boxer starts showing deisrespect to the other boxers…give credit where credit is due…pacquiao did a lot for the sport…mayweather inspite of his attitude and crime-related family is one of,if not the best pure boxer the sport has ever seen,…people say pacquiao fans are so oboxious, but frankly i don’t know which are worse the pacquiao fans or the pacquiao haters…to me,both are on the same level…way down looow…like yourself lahr.
mike tyson…say his name…mike tyson…he was wiping the canvas with fighters a LOT taller than him….you’re not even a boxing fan…just a washed up untalented hater…go find a cheap,lonely,dark,God-forsaken bar and just drink your hate away…
lahr….quit posting your blogs here….i can’t even call you a writer…..answer me this instead,HOW DOES A 2 FEET MONGOOSE BEAT AND KILL A 6 FEET COBRA?…do some research,my friend before posting senseless articles here…your giving the website a bad name.spew you’re hatred on another site…you’re not even worth wiping the backside of pacqioa with.
BoxingHistory,
Freedie Roach is talking trash about Clottey because he’s worried? Right. Why the hell would he be talking trash if he wasn’t confident? If Roach was quieter than usual and would just keep saying it’s a tough fight, or “we’ll try our best,” that’s when you start worrying. We’ll see on Saturday when Pacquiao ruins this guy, KO or UD, it’ll be another W.
can’t wait for the fight … LET’S GO PACMAN !!!
‘..how is a short 5’6” fighter going to fight a taller fighter who is three inches taller and who has longer arms as well from the distance .. ‘ — that’s the greatness of the pacman
The thing many are forgetting is that fighters who are truely special can break the conventional rules and beat fighters that are “too big,too strong, too fast, too tall, too whatever!
The thing is we don’t truely know how special any fighter is untill they have taken risks.I’m really looking forward to this fight!
wow what are you thinking saying clottey is going to win every fight pacquiao has you say he is to short he has no power and he has proved you wrong every time i know pacquiao well win im cant say how becuase he changes every round but its going to happen and when it does all you guys that said he cant you can suck it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Fair article and you are entitle to your opinion. Actually a good assessment of the comparison between the height and reach advantage of Clottey. This writer is a little respectable even though I myself thinks that Pacquiao will win. If Dave Lahr is reading this, this is the way you arrive at a conclusion by pointing out the advantages of one guy and getting your conclusion from there.
Paul Williams is the one name that no one at welter weight will even whisper. Beating him would make the biggest statement in boxing, but the truth is no one at welter weight believes they can beat that man.
Manny Pacquio is one of the most overrated fighters in boxing history. He is not a welter weight great, and in fact he is not even the best welter weight in the world right now. He beat up Cotto a guy who got totally destroyed by Margaritto and they made him the number 1 welter weight in the world. He should have fought Shane Mosley. Now he is going to face the guy that Cotto beat. If he wanted to impress me, he should have fought somebody that someone like Sugar Ray Leonard, or Tommy Hearns would have fought and excepted the challange from Paul Williams. None of these fighters today should be talked about in the same breath as the all time greats, because while these guys are busy making up excuses like he’s too big, or he’s too tall Sugar Ray Leonard chose to take on fighters no one thought he could defeat like Tommy Hearns, and Marvin Hagler. If someone wants to prove to me they’re an all-time great in the welter weight division defeat Paul Williams then we can talk. Until then all these guys are the same just different names, and different fan bases, but all the same.
I don’t hate the guy, I just don’t worship him. All I asked is what will happen if Pacquiao can’t hurt Clottey?
Why do you all hate Manny so much? He’s been nothing but good for the sport of boxing. Do you hate Manny solely because of his obnoxious fans?
What will happen if Pacquiao can’t hurt Clottey?
Clottey is going to hurt Pacquiao! That is why Roach is ranting and raving about this fight. Clottey will overpower Pacman and tear up his face! Mark my words. Pacman is easy to hit and he hit Cotto with 267 power shots and could not knock him out. Pacman is going to be hurt.
Cotto actually could have finished that fight, but he was taking a terrible beating. Dela Hoya looked like he was taking Pacquiao’s punch, but what it came down to was that he just too slow to catch Pacquiao with anything. Clottey is something of a mix of these 2. Here you have a guy that may possibly be able to take the punch like Dela Hoya, and may be just fast enough to land some punches like Cotto was able to.
The question people should be asking is what will happen if Clottey taste Pacquiao’s best punch and nothing happens? I remember when every body and their moma thought Trinidad was going to destroy Hopkins, and you saw everybodys face when Trinidad landed that big right hook on him, and B-Hop just looked at him and shook his head like it was nothing. You knew it was over for Felix at that point. I’m not saying that will happen, but it Clottey taste Pacquiao’s power and keeps coming, at that size with his strength unless Pacquiao plans on running all night you could be looking at something you didn’t expect.
If it took him 12 rounds to stop glass jawed Cotto he’s not gonna stop clottey in 5.
i cant wait for the excuses of this writer after the fight..
“pacquiao never fights on inside” well what did he do against the taller oscar de la hoys he thought on outside coming in to exchange and then out after his flurry.. that is what roach is getting at. he doesnt want pacman to stand stationary with him and fight on inside (bit like how hatton used to fight). he wants him quick throwing punches in bunches then to escape out of range… pacquioa will stop him in round 5! i see this being pacmans best ever performance!
Clottey is going to bust up Manny. What Freddie Roach is trying to say is that Manny will be on his bicycle. Manny’s arms are too short to fight from the outside. That’s a matter of physics. Clottey is 5’9 and will be 160 pounds with a 3 inch reach advantage. Not to mention he has good defense. This fight will tell us if Manny is what all his fans say he is. I know Freddie Roach is worried. This is the most talking I ever heard him do before a fight. Trying to send out smokescreens that Manny is ready but in reality Bob Arum picked the wrong opponent this time.
Vince Vegas you have your assessment absolutely dead right,if people would just wright their take on a fight on how they see it with no bias against a certain fighter like all the haters on this site, then maybe we would have some interesting debates.
Another tactic divulge to the media to whip the fans into a frenzy! This is Freddie Roach. He’s just messing with you.
@Jack Flores: “PACQUIAO ON HIS PART, HAS TO DEFEND HIS CROWN BY ALL MEANS TO RETAIN IT.”
Duh!
@Jack Flores: Dude, why are you shouting? CapsLock key broken? LOL.
THE BOXING CHAMPIONSHIP BETWEEN PACQUIAO AND CLOTTEY IS A SPECTACULAR EVENT AND IS EXPECTED TO DRAW A BIG TREMENDOUS CROWED ON THE FOLLOWING ANALYSIS: CLOTTEY IS JUST NOT ONLY A CHALLENGER BUT ALSO A WORLD KNOWN CHAMPION NOT YESTERYEARS, BUT ONLY VERY RECENTLY. PACQUIAO ON HIS PART, HAS TO DEFEND HIS CROWN BY ALL MEANS TO RETAIN IT. AND I BELIEVE HE WILL DO ALL HE CAN TO MAINTAIN THE RESPECT OF EVERYONE WHO LOVE BOXING MOST ESPECIALLY HIS DIEHARD FANS AND HARDCORE FOLLOWERS. IN OTHER WORDS, IT IS A MATTER OF SHAME AND HONOR. ON THE OTHER HAND, SINCE CLOTTEY IS GIVEN THE OPPORTUNITY TO WRESTLE THE TITLE HELD BY PACMAN, HE WILL DO EVERYTHING IN HIS POWER TO CONQUER AND DEFEAT PACQUIAO. THIS IS A CHANCE OF A LIFETIME AND OFTEN DUB AS THE RAREST JUNCTURE OF A GOOD FORTUNE ON THE PART OF CLOTTEY. THIS IS IT. LOT OF PEOPLE DON’T REALIZE THE IMPORTANCE OF THIS FORTHCOMING BOXING ADVENTURE BETWEEN A SPLENDID FIGHTER AND A FORMER CHAMP. MAY THE BEST MAN WIN.
JACK FLORES
BOXING ANALYST.
and if pacman beats clottey, it will be egg on your face dave…. lol
Your so smart!!!
@ Dave Lahr
i need enhancement drugs to read this article.
I don’t see Clottey winning, looking at his last fight with Cotto. Clottey was winning that fight until he decided not to through any more punches. I am also surprised that no one has commented on that terrible wrestling move that could have affected Clottey’s rythem, after beeing thrown on the deck.Clottey also failed to take advantage of a badly cut Cotto, who was cut in the early rounds. Surely, Cotto should have been an easier opponent. Manny is definately winning this match because Clottey is not at that level of the game yet.
David be true to yourself, your in love with the Pacman. you’ve never written an article beside pacman and coach freddie.lol
Dave,it’s obvious Roach makes these statememts just to upset you………….
Fighting from the ‘outside’ is subjective. The distance will be dictated by the man’s reach however it is a style adjustment opposed to say, choosing to stay in the pocket. (Think Corrales / Castillo) Where two fighters literally lean on each other & trade in close.
Manny won’t do this with Clottey, unless the fight reaches a point in the later rounds where Clottey seems to be tired, which does happen. However, if they’re concerned about the head butt issue best to stay with a stick & move strategy.
You could say Manny fought Oscar from the outside, using his jab to move in, landing a power punch, spinning to a position where Oscar’s power was ineffective. As Oscar took more & more punishmemt Manny was able to stay in close, longer.
As far as the statement about Clottey being more motivated simply because he needs the money? That’s a motivation that should begin one fight #1. Money’s only a constructive motivation to a point. Pac had enough money to retire comfortably years ago & still fights like a man who doesn’t know where his next meal is coming from.
Clottey will win this 1 to big n to traditional 2lose 2pacman he is 2wild. Game Ova!!!!!
This guy is funny as hell….always a good read….like reading the ranting of some bitter old man or a daydreaming loner who’s planning a Columbine….fascinating…HA HA HA HA
he fought de la hoya from the outside. In and out real quick is pacs style, hes never been a real inside fighter regardless of the opponent.
here we go again, this writer is a hopeless case when in comes to manny pacquiao & roach, it seems everything coming from manny’s camp, this writer tends to oppose. his trying his luck again that his prediction will now come true against pac & co. keep on dreaming, dave lahr!
no cigar, pac part rubber, that why bullets bounce of him, ha.
He takin’ enhancement drugs to make his arms longer
roachg plays head games .now this one a head fake,as see this to be the game for cottey. that good, as Its what I want to see more of pac is fighting from the outside ,some how pac has lond reach, and the punches take you apart,as in shows in your faces.I would love to see distroy cottey from the outside ,till he ripe, if he does this floyd .dont stand a chance.outside punches .middle ,uppercuts ,and close trading combination ,he have the whole packages.
