Arum: “This fight [Pacquiao-Clottey] is going to be harder the Cotto fight”

By Dan Ambrose: Top Rank promoter Bob Arum thinks the Manny Pacquiao vs. Joshua Clottey fight is going to be a tougher fight than Pacquiao’s 12th round TKO win over Miguel Cotto last November. In an article at Philstar, Arum says “This fight is going to be harder than the Cotto fight. Why” Because Clottey is more durable than Cotto.” It’s unclear whether Arum really means this or is just saying this to drum up boxing fan interest in purchasing the fight on pay-per-view or buying tickets to watch it in the huge Dallas Cowboy Stadium.

“Clottey is bigger and stronger, but Manny is a much better boxers, a much better athlete,” Arum says. There’s no question that Pacquiao is the better fighter in this bout. The only question is whether Clottey can fight better than he has in the recent past and possibly pull off an upset. On paper, Clottey doesn’t have the slightest chance to beat Pacquiao.

Clottey has few wins over credible opponents during his career, and has a nasty habit of covering up for long stretches of his fight and just absorbing punches to his gloves. He blocks a lot of shots, to be sure, but Clottey also gets hit a lot too because he covers up too much without throwing enough punches back at his opponents.

Arum says “If Manny loses, I would be sorry for Manny. But that’s boxing and a lot of things can happen. Clottey is a very good and a very dangerous welterweight. If Clottey is successful then I would go immediately to Clottey who is under promotion to us and ask him to do a rematch.”

If Pacquiao loses, Arum’s cash cow will likely take a big hit in a loss of fans. I can understand why Arum would want to arrange a rematch as fast as possible. Pacquiao would need to beat Clottey in order to reestablish his credibility as a fighter. After all, few boxing experts think that Clottey has a chance of beating Pacquiao. If he actually does end up beating Manny, this would be a huge upset.

Still, Arum and Top Rank would do well regardless of whether Pacquiao loses, because they promote both Pacquiao and Clottey. However, there’s probably very little chance that Clottey can beat a fighter like Pacquiao. Clottey is too predictable with his offense, and with his primitive crab shell defense, he spends too much time covering up and not enough time opening up with his offense.

Clottey can’t beat a fighter like Pacquiao by covering up, and he’s not a big enough puncher to score a one punch knockout. He’s the type of fighter that needs to land an accumulation of punches for him to take out an opponent. Clottey has only one knockout win in the past five years, so it’s probably safe to say that he won’t be knocking Pacquiao out on March 13th.

Arum says “I don’t know how you knock Clottey out.” This is very true. Clottey has never been stopped before, and it’s unlikely that Pacquiao will be able to get a stoppage win unless the referee jumps in and stops the fight due to Clottey not throwing punches back at Pacquiao.

@Oli: how did clottey beat up cotto? Cotto had a bad cut and continued to fight unlike your chump who was about to quit cos his punkass fell and “hurt” his knee. So ur chump is garbage I figured he was going to do something against pacman but nothing. Is it me but I thought pacman was a lot skinnier in this fight compared to the cotto fight, can we say something going on with pacman no doubt

  • gio says:

@jorge yea man, ur right on the money there. Pac, just take tha damn blood test. What do u have to hide? Pac came out looking really bad on this one and now he’s having a fight that should not even be ppv in my opinion. They should show it for free on hbo. Sad turn of events.

  • MbfromPhilly says:

Arum doesn’t need to hype Clottey like this is going to be a competitive fight because it already is a very exciting very dangerous match for Pacquaio! I read the disrespectful post that are being said regarding Clottey’s chances and I can only shake my head in amazement at the ignorance of some of these so called boxing fans. While I’ll agree that Clottey probably can’t win even the most lopsided of decisions; I will tell you all for certain that Pacquaio is gonna take a professional as whipping in this fight! And Clottey; knowing that the deck is stacked against him has already professed his need for the knockout or stoppage! I don’t know how many Clottey fights you’ve all seen but you’re setting yourselves up for disaster!

  • Jorge says:

It all came down to a drug test Manny Pacquiao did not want to take. 40 million $$$$$$$$$$$$ just to take blood i think Manny is only going to make about 6 million $$$ this fight.
Seriously why wouldnt you just take the test Mayweather was going to take the test as well, so there is no advantage there.
Clottey is perfect for Pacquiao, no lateral movement, doesnt use his jab, covers up for a long period of time, isnt busy enough. Taylored made for Manny Pacquiao to throw combinations and move whenever he wants.
Yes Clottey is bigger and stronger, but what good does that do when you dont use that to your advantage. He had Cotto Cut, hurt, backing up, but did nothing to take that fight from Cotto. I mean if your fighting in NYC before the Puerto Rican Parade, do you honestly think your going to get a decision in NYC!!
Manny Pacquiao will never fight Floyd Mayweather or Sugar Shane Mosley, because of a random blood test. If you have nothing to hide why not take it.
My bigges thing is that both fighters are doing it, so there is no advantage on either side, just do the damn thing.

It would be so sweet for Manny Pacquiao fans, if Pacquiao takes the damn test, comes out negative goes out there and stomps on Floyd or Sugar Shane or whoever else he fights. Because that will clear his name and show everyone he is clean.

Arum is getting really desperate trying to hype this fight up. He does have a real challenge though, having to try and watch a top tier fighter get in the ring with some thats a B-level fighter AT BEST. Arum’s equal at GBP are predicting 3 million for May 1. And Arum is out trying to make Clottey sound like a beast in the ring. May 1 will over double Manny’s fight in PPVs. Easily. And why is Arum silent on why he insisted Manny fight where there aren’t any tests for PEDs??

  • kray says:

It Clottey were to beat the breaks off of Pac–probably won’t–isn’t he worthy of moving on and seeking greater challenges? If it’s controversial, can’t Clottey get a rematch? Obviously, the answer is NO, to both of these questions. But, this is just another example that this sport is about MONEY, before all else. May 1, may prove to be, yet, another example.

  • Bob Arum says:

Alot of Pacquiao fans’s look at Mayweather as the enemy because of the comments he’s made about Pacquiao, but take a good look at Bob Arum, just for a quick second. Try to understand why Mayweather jr, and Dela Hoya both left. Now look at the 25% of Pacquiao’s purse that he’s taking and you have found your answer. Bob Arum is the real person we should hear Pacquiao fan’s complaining about not some guy name Mayweather who either way can’t take Manny’s money no matter what he says.

  • oisilener1982 says:

Pacquiao’s story is an inspiration to many of the Filipinos. He came from a poor family. The situation became worse when his father left them when he was still young. Her mother was forced to work hard for their everyday living since she has 6 children. Pacquiao had to stop his elementary education at that time. At the age of 14 he asked her mother if he can work in Manila but her mother disagreed. Determined to follow his dreams he defied her mother. He became a construction worker, then train to box

  • redDaWg says:

Why dont u guys just watch the fight instead of all this BS !

  • Mike says:

Pac is the man to beat right now as his fights are always exciting!I just finished watching Hatton vs Mayweather and Hatton vs Manny and what can I say,Manny looked way more dominating nthan Mayweather did! Speed wise their close but Manny fights more aggressively while Mayweather is more defensive.Out of the two Mayweather is much harder to hit as Manny does take solid hits in almost every fight. This fight is not a given as Mayweather is going to have his hands full BIGTIME vs Mosley!

  • Mike says:

When Armstrong moved up in weight to challenge heavier champs he did it the right way,by fighting at the weight limmitts that the sports rules dictated for the title challlenge! Thats why the historians will regaurd Manny’s win over Cotto as flawed when it comes to Manny winning the “true” WW title!

  • Me says:

ALL OF YOU PACQUIAO HATER, BULLSH17 YOU ALL.

  • Mike says:

Clotey will be a way tougher fight than Cotto!Cotto isn’t the most resiliant fighter by far while Cottey seems to be able to take punishment alot better. Also fighting at the real weight limmit might help Clottey.I still don’t understand how Manny can beat Cotto for a belt when they fought below the weight? This is whats making boxing go down hill, one should fight at the propper weight that the title entails you to fight at!

  • Huhuge says:

well it’s true that this fight is more interesting cause clottey won by points on cotto, so probably this fight will tell us who is the tougher guy of them two. and i guess this is a knock out fight.

  • Huhuge says:

    @ luvboxing

    you’re a….

  • Bo says:

The nerve of Arum! How is it that he represents both fighters but only takes the side of one? There’s no way Clottey will beat Pacquiao, to much politics involved-unless he knocks Pac-Man out and that wont happen.

  • Reidj says:

This will be a great fight that will only add to the legend of Pacquiao!

  • ADE says:

Bobo just talks to talk sometimes. But I believe the fight will be harder, because it is at 147. Which Josh will have his natural weight, and his chin will be stronger than Cottos. I do not think 145 hurt Cotto as far as conditioning goes, but eliminated major size advantages and weakened his chin. At 147, his chin was decent, ex. vs Mosley.

  • lacem up says:

clottey hasnt beat a good opponent yet….bob will say ANYTHING to promote a fight…this fight will be competive when pigs fly !!

  • Oli says:

It WILL be tougher than the cotto fight. Clottey beat the hell out of cotto. I cant believe the stupidity of these writers and fans alike who claim this to be a mismatch like clottey is just some chump

  • The Truth says:

arum is definitely the biggest crook in boxing, when fighters drop him he hounds them in the press. People forgot the things he started saying about pacnan when pacman had sign for golden boy, he was just as nasty about delahoja and floyd for dropping him. I remember him saying both oscar and floyd were the greatest fighters he had seen on different accasions, now he says that abpout pac. The man set up cotto to loose to pac, forcing him to go down in weight to suit pac. They are setting up clottery to loose, the first combination pac throws and clottey does´nt reply, the fight will be stopped.

  • Manong Tagacebu says:

The winner of the Pacquiao-Clottey fight will be…. BOB ARUM!!! Hahaha!!!

  • slim says:

Arum is what boxing is all about. A loud mouth who has never done anything athletic in his life, fixing fights so he makes piles of cash at the expense of super-fit, below average intelligence, third-world kids. The man is a parasite and boxing is full of them. He’s not the biggest crook in boxing. Heard of a bloke called Don King?

  • wowzabean says:

    gio,

Buster beat Tyson because Mike didn’t take his training seriously. If you saw his documentary he was banging hookers, doing drugs and even got knocked out by a sparring partner a week before the fight. In fact Douglas got rocked for his fight following Tyson. If Pacquiao takes things lightly it could happen, but Pacquiao trains hard for every single fight. An upset is not likely, the best fighter will win.

  • gio says:

shut up arum. U know tha outcome. We all do, pac wins by stoppage somewhere around round 9. The ref is gonna see clottey not punching back but he is really covering up and he will stop the fight cuz pac by that time would have gotten some really good hits in on clottey. Personally I hope clottey is tha next buster douglas and knocks out pac, that would be the greatest thing this year lmao. One can dream tho right?

  • MarathonMan1 says:

Arum is no fool. Clottey goes to the cards he knows he won’t get a decision. Clottey is going to rough Manny up. If Manny can with stand the long methodical boxing style of Clottey he will be ready for Floyd. If he gets beat down and they rob Clottey it would be devistating for Boxing. I don’t see Manny slipping. He’s disciplined and he will follow Roaches game plan. If Manny gets out boxed I won’t be surprised. He will beat Clottey with volume. Manny will be exposed.

  • LuvBoxing says:

Never believe a single word that comes out of Arums mouth. He is the biggest crook in boxing by far. Just to hear him talk or read what he says makes my skin crawl.
