Will Mayweather fight someone his own size?

By Sean McDaniel: There are rumors in the boxing world that unbeaten Floyd Mayweather Jr. (40-0, 25 KOs) will opt to fight 37-year-old Nate Campbell (33-5-1, 25 KO’s) next Floyd’s scheduled March 13th bout at the MGM Grand, in Las Vegas, Nevada. I don’t know about you, but I’m not so sure that Campbell, a lightweight up until late last year, will be the kind of opponent needed for Mayweather to take some of the fans away from the Manny Pacquiao vs. Joshua Clottey fight on the same night.

Nothing is certain as to who Mayweather’s next opponent will be, but if the rumors about Campbell being the guy are correct, I think Mayweather won’t be doing himself any favors by making this pick. I could understand it if Mayweather was a lightweight and if this fight had taken place two years ago shortly after Campbell defeated then unbeaten Juan Diaz to take his WBA and WBO lightweight titles.

However, Campbell didn’t look good in beating lightweight contender Ali Funeka by a 12 round majority decision last year in February 2009, in a fight that could have gone either way. Campbell also didn’t look good in his last fight, a no contest against Timothy Bradley. The fight only lasted three rounds, but Campbell didn’t appear to have Bradley’s number in the three rounds that were fought. But most of all, if Mayweather chooses another smaller fighter to fight, it gives the impression that he doesn’t want to fight opponents his own size.

In contrast, Pacquiao has been steadily moving up in weight and taking on bigger and better fighters in the past two years. Pacquiao has beaten David Diaz, Oscar De La Hoya, Ricky Hatton and Miguel Cotto. Some boxing fans would say that each of these fighters are flawed and would be beaten by a lot of other top fighters, but Pacquiao still accomplished something by moving up in weight and taking on bigger fighters.

But for Mayweather to be taking on smaller fighters, and if he chooses the soon to be 38-year-old Campbell, Mayweather would be choosing an older one as well. Mayweather doesn’t owe it to anyone to take on a top welterweight or a talented light middleweight like Paul Williams, but he won’t be doing himself any favors if Floyd does choose another small fighter. Mayweather has beaten Ricky Hatton and Juan Manuel Marquez in his last two fights. Both are good fighters for their own weight classes, but neither of them was in the same weight class as Mayweather.

Campbell is only an inch shorter than Mayweather, but the problem here is that Campbell has fought as a lightweight up until recently, and in his one fight at the higher light welterweight class, Campbell looked slow and sluggish during the Bradley fight. If you’re a Campbell fan, you could say that he was just getting warmed up, but he looked like he was having a tough time getting out of 1st gear against Bradley. I

f you consider putting Campbell in with a bigger, faster fighter than Bradley, I think we have the elements of a mismatch. But most of all, this isn’t the kind of opponent that will excite the boxing community. From what I’ve read on various boxing forums on the Internet, few fans are interested in seeing Mayweather fight Campbell. The fighter they do want to see Mayweather fight is Paul Williams. Will Mayweather do that? No, probably not in this lifetime unfortunately.

@daud those mayweather fight before retirement was all great and has full credit for beating those guys. that was before.pbf come out from retirement he comes back fighting JUan manuel marquez JMM. Even mosley keeps calling mayweather to fight long before he fights JMM. and also mosley step up the ring after pbf vs jmm fight. but that doesn’t make an impact to fight mosley. why?

  • goodgrief says:

why does not mayweather request the random long before coming out of retirement? before he fight JMM. subject Jmm to intensive random blood testing. if this happen before for sure Manny pacman Paquiao would agree with Usada random testing. why? coz he sees it a requirement of mayweather and the pacman will be prepare himself to random drug bloodtesting psychologically. Its all about getting used to it.When all is agreed on and then all of a sudden, mayweather – hey wait u need to be random blood test for drug. Kinda weird. now here Pacman 3 blood testing but still not acceptable to mayweather camps and mayweather himself.

  • Daud says:

@Lou if that’s all that De La Hoya was then why didn’t the Pacquio fans tell him not to fight De La Hoya? Instead they made it like he was the greatest thing since sliced bread. And De La Hoya wasn’t the only bigger fighter Floyd faced. Once again check the resume

  • Blitz says:

Believe it or not Floyd is competeing against Manny on March 13th. (if he doesn’t change his date) With that being said his arm is twisted. He needs to finally face someone who is of upper tier fighting caliber. NO…not Malignaggi or Campbell. But a good WW and a good NAME if he even wants to get close to the Manny #s. I truly believe he has not announced an opponent judt yet..due to GBP trying like all HE*LL to convince Floyd just that. FLOYD YOU CAN”T SELL ON YOUR OWN. Even though you may think you can….you can’t. I suggest to Floyd and his camp along with GBP to get P-WILL that fight right there would kill Mannys #s and along with that shut up all the critics including myself. I always knew Floyd was a BI*TCH but RIGHT NOW AT THIS MOMENT is his CHANCE to not only show Manny up but shut all of us critics up. SO MAN-UP FLOYD. TAke the panties off and get it on with a REAL THREAT.

  • Hook&Jab says:

No he does not need took take on a big challenge but just a good fight. He’s planning to take on Sugar if he gets past Berto but if not, he can take on Paul williams then and if he beats Paul and wins u can forget about Manny even mention Floyds name. He would definately retire to avoid that fight.

  • money-mayweather says:

it dont matter who i beat , yall will use the SAME excuses you always have !! or you will find new ones ..i am the greatest fighter of this generation !! i will never be beat !! i cant be out boxed or ko’ed…no body has the skills i have .. i hurts alot of people to admit that .. i am the total package .. this fall i will out skill ,outbox and then to shut you all up , i will ktfo of manny* puss !!

  • JR says:

You say Mayweather should take on someone his own size and then suggest Paul Williams? That’s not exactly his own size is it? I like Paul Williams but he should fight in Middleweight. It’s more of a challenge for him (close fight against Martinez) and can improve his skills.
If Margarito is back I’d like to see Mayweather take him on. He’d still be at a size disadvantage but I can’t see Margarito moving to Middleweight on a comeback.

  • goodgrief says:

January 14 i’m still waiting for the official announcement of floyd opponent. There will be a press conference of manny vs clottey at 18th of january dallas cowboy stadium. Still no word of who floyd jr will fight also on march 13.

  • goodgrief says:

if mayweather vs campbell(still to be determined). same night with mannypacman vs clottey at dallas cowboy stadium. Surely the boxing fans and press will compare the numbers of outcome of both fights and they will know who will be PPV king. Its too risky for floyd jr. being the Moneyman floyd jr he will not risk fighting at march 13. IT may or may not that this fight will turnout be the lowest PPV for pbf. I think floyd will make an excuse for not fighting at march 13.

  • Ancient_Silence says:

    @Scooby
Spot on man. By the way for those of us who read between the lines it has been obvious for years that Arum is a snake.

  • jasz says:

Floyd “I-love-my-donut-so-much” Mayweather Jr. is being his usual yellow, cowardly self. Unwilling to put on the line his precious “0″, and instead cherry-picks his opponent. In this case he’s considering fighting Nate Campbell. While Paulie “Wants-his-cracker” Malignaggi is green with envy for not being seriously considered as an opponent to Mayweather.

Well, if Mayweather decides to take on Malignaggi instead of Campbell as his next opponent they should call this fight as “Mayweather-Malignaggi: The battle of peanut M&M’s.” Mayweather is the “Yellow” M&M while Malignaggi is the “Green” M&M. Then maybe they should wear M&M costumes just to make their dancing in the ring more entertaining.

  • REGINALD says:

Cheif Malik:TELL FLOYD TO WAIT FOR THE WINNER…OUT OF SHANE & BERTO.

  • LeoNerd Elerbe says:

Of course! Of course! Floyd will fight anyone in his own size. But class? No way! No way! NO way! Pacquiao is smaller but is in the same class. So is Mosley. Williams is a lot bigger but is in the same class too.

  • ron says:

    nope he will not

  • Blueblood says:

The question was ‘Will Mayweather fight someone his own size?

Easy answer, NO, does not need to be justified.

    Beating smaller guys is easier.

  • lex_fugitive says:

Floyd and Manny both started at 106. Floyd fought Oscar at Oscar’s weight, Manny didn’t. Manny won a welterweight title without even fighting as a welterweight. And if Floyd is a mismatch because hes a bigger faster Bradley, how would this be any different from him being a bigger, faster Marquez? Manny didn’t want Floyd because Floyd is bigger, faster, and more talented than Marquez. If Floyd fights a Campbell or someone its simply a filler until Mosley.

  • Duke says:

    lou
if baldomir was a joke, how did he beat clottey, judah and gatti? the dude had a better resume up to that point then margarito. corrales spent another three years at least at 130 after floyd. he may have been 5’10 but he had the frame of a smaller fighter. if i was floyd, i would take on alfredo angulo. the dude is a margarito clone that would stand right in front of floyd all night. if he’s thinking of fighting a smaller man in march, he should spare us and wait for the winner of mosely vs berto.

  • M1 says:

Hey Roadkill – got nothing to do with being European dude. I’m British and think Floyd’s the best fighter on the planet. Would like to see him prove it against Manny or Moseley though.

  • Lou says:

Balidimor was a joke and the last time i look Corrales was the same weight. Even though I believe he was weight drained in that fight that is why he moved up in weight after that fight.

  • Lou says:

Lucas you don’t pay attention Aurm will be hosting Pac fights in Texas if this one does good. Do you know why so when they offer Floyd a fight it will be in Texas so that Floyd can’t use his wonder drug Xylocain. Without that Floyd can’t punch because he will cry like in the Carlos Hernandez bout.

  • Lou says:

Hey Duad, A retired out of Shape promoter dosn’t count. Did you see when a Promoter fights a real fighter he’s stopped in 8 rounds.

  • ART SA BOXING EXPERT says:

    HE SUCKS

  • Daud says:

hey idiots Floyd has already beaten bigger fighters check the resume

  • Lucas says:

Its pretty cliche’ of me to go here and defend Mayweather now, but look, Mayweather is being smart because he just wants this fight with Pacquiao, win and then retire. Thats what he wants! What if he takes on a big guy, gets beat and then the fight of the century NEVER HAPPENS! Wouldnt that suck?!?!

Ok, Clottey, say what you will, but all Pacquiao has to do is simply out last Clottey for 6 rounds AND ITS A GUARANTEED WIN, NO QUESTIONS, WIN-WIN!

This isnt fair… Nobody wants to see Mayweather fight Williams RIGHT NOW… Maybe after a Pacquiao fight, but Williams wont make him get paid and its too high risk and too little reward.

Now I want to see Pavlik-Williams.. Now that would be awesome… Do you think Mayweather could even fight Pavlik? Or is Pavlik waaayy too big? Hmmm..

  • Magnum Force says:

What the hell did Mayweather ever come out of retirement for?
He bores the crap out of me,in or out of the ring.
F*ck off back into retirement Floyd.

  • HEYYO says:

I like how scooby pretends like he has all this inside information, when he is just clueless. If you honestly think arum and pacman are going to get a 60-40 or even more insane 70-30 fight against the biggest cash cow and biggest ego in boxing, you are crazy. Floyd would never fight for less than half and he never should. If you think its all just a big plan to skew the money side of the fight you are over analyzing it. So, dont pretend like you are informing the world when really you are just making up your little pro manny theory!

  • Stan13 says:

@scooby, All the scientific details are interesting. I believe Mayweather and Schaefer could still win this game if Mayweather fights Mosley (assuming Mosley beats Berto)in May. BTW, I am not a Mayweather fan. I don’t think Floyd will risk it, though.

Right now I would “settle” for Kermit Cintron; he is a welter/jr. middle and a former champ with the power & size to make a fight with Floyd interesting! Floyd would be exempt from all criticism with this selection. I just don’t think he will do it. Who knows?

  • M1 says:

Sergio Martinez – the perfect opponent for Floyd.

  • ManEePacYow says:

    @ scooby

you are a genius man….thats exactly what happened….
too many idiots out there that don’t know whats really going on….all they do is repeat the same arguments they read about online….haha

  • mally j says:

I AM ALMOST DONE WITH THIS FOOL MAYWEATHER HE HAS TO FIGHT SOMEBODY JUST AS OR BIGGER THAN HIM OR SOMEBODY WHO IS A THREAT, SOON. I KNOW HE RICH AND DOESN’T NEED TO PROVE HIMSELF TO KNOW ONE BUT AS A BOXING FAN AND LOVING TO SEE HIM FIGHT AND BELIEVE HE IS THE BEST I AM RUNNING OUT OF REASONS WHY HE IS TAKING THESE WEAK OPPONENTS.

  • Folydie Chicken says:

Hey Floydie there is another 38 year old and his name is SHane Mosley. You may have heard of him. Hell I know you have, because he is just one of the many in your weight class that you are scared of. Fight Mosley chicken floyd

  • Mak says:

ONLY person that can see May at 147 is Williams

And the reason people keep mentioning him is because they want May to lose. How many times Wiliams name come up to fight Pac? Oh ok

  • Cheif Malik says:

Milsand, Pac Mcguire fought them at catch weights. As far as floyd fighting some one his own size Suger Shane and Berto are fighting in two weeks. Cotto is shell shock from not one but 2 knockouts. Margatitto needs to get his license back next month. Plus he is a Bob Arum Fighter so he wont be fighting Floyd Other than Paul Williams who no body even Pac-roid will fight. Who do you suggest Floyd Fight at 147 huh huh I dont hear you

  • sean says:

Whatever comments you’re gonna say regarding Floyd Jr figh Campbell, does Floyd jr really care? All he cares is himself. As long as that “0″ remains the same and at the same get the easy money then who cares.

  • Mak says:

    Isnt Pac smaller than May?

  • nick says:

mayweather is a yellow belly and i’m glad boxing fans are seeing him for what he is. he’s just trying to hang on to his unbeaten record as he thinks it will make him one of the greats when he retires but it won’t, he’ll be remembered for ducking the best in his division unless he steps up to the plate before its too late. come on mayflower stop the excuses and step up !!!!!!!

  • M1 says:

Floyd needs to fight someone seriously fast – look at his likely next 3 opponents; Pacquiao, Moseley or Berto. They all have one thing in common. Lets face it bar those three and Paul Williams there’s no one in the division bar one to either trouble him or give him the tune up he needs for those fighters – Sergio Martinez. He’s the perfect tune up and will be tough for Floyd to beat. It’ll give him the perfect bench mark for the next bout. Fine, he may not have the power, but skill wise and speed wise he’s as close to Manny or Moseley as you’ll get plus Floyd won’t loose face by fighting him as he’s a highly respected fighter especially after his last fight against Williams. Martinez is easily the best fight for him out there at the moment – won’t make a lot of money but will do all the right things otherwise.

  • giants says:

By taking this fight, Floyd has exposed himself to the whole world, what the real and hardcore boxing fans knew for a long time, that Floyd is at his best fighting guys much smaller than him.

  • milosands says:

Whats with this “tell pacman to do the test” rubbish? Don’t fall for it. Pacquiao is dangerous and Mayweather knows it.

Saying that however, I would love to see Mayweather in with Williams. If he can beat that guy then there can be no arguments. I would also prefer Floyd to fight Williams then Pacquiao. But he won’t do it.

  • Badrul Islam says:

Listen tell Pacman to do the test and then everyone eat your words. I wont bother try and justify Mayweather, you will see that he is a class above the rest. Pacman will be a walk over, i’d rather see Mosley or Williams!!

  • milosands says:

Before Mayweathers “retirement” there was a wealth of great but dangerous fighters for him to pick from – Williams, Mosley, Margarito, Cotto etc… but he chose to duck them all.
He mostly takes safe fights when he doesn’t he has problems. De La Hoya gave him all kinds of problems as did Castillo. Then Hatton aside, who has he actually beaten worth mentioning?

He is a fight dodger and Pacman gets a lot more respect – Morales, Barrera, Marquez (all at their natural weight), Hatton, Cotto, De La Hoya – he schooled the lot of them at there own weight. Unbelievable.

  • John,e says:

They don’t call him Cherrypicker Cherryweather for nothing!!!!! his career is beging to resemble the school yard bully scenario.

  • p4p all time? says:

Mayweather is a joke. He calls him self the greatest but he has been ducking people since the zab fight.

  • lebron says:

if mayweather fights campbell boxing is even more of a joke than i thought. you might as well pay me to walk into a retirement home and punch somebody in the face. this is even worse than marquez at least he fought at 140 before stepping in the ring with mayweather the most campbell has ever weighed is 138. if this happens and mayweather still claims to be the best he should probably be banned until he agrees to fight a formidable fighter other than pacquiao. no disrespect to campbell he’s just naturally 10 pounds lighter.

  • Blueblood says:

I dont think we’ll be lucky enough to see Mayweather fight someone in his own division, he tends to look back at lower weight class and see who is weak enough to be beaten.

He should rather fight Cotto and see how he fair with him. Or maybe just maybe Round two Mayweather vs Dela Hoya lol! Blood testing for both ;)
