Image: Welcome back RICKY "HITMAN" HATTONBy Shaun Campbell: Welcome back Ricky “Hitman” Hatton. Wrong or right decision that’s not important. The right decision was always the one Hatton made on his own, which is that he will fight on. Hinting that this will be his last fight, Ricky told Sky Sports News that his comeback will probably be in the summer and that probably should have taken time off after the first loss to Floyd Mayweather jnr.

Seeing the reaction on people’s faces when they first heard of his comeback, they tried hard, but failed to hold back a smile. People seem to be saying Hatton should quit because that’s what the majority view is. The point about his weight for one. Many so-called experts have said at 31, Hatton can not lose that weight anymore, but this is by no chance the heaviest he has been. There was a time back when the Hitman was back with former trainer Billy Graham when he balloon up to 190 pounds. At this moment he is probably at about 170 pounds. And if there are any questions about his desire to comeback, well they can be silenced now with his bank balance looking healthy, it is obviously not a comeback for money.

Hatton gave no indication of who he would be fighting in his comeback bout. Although names that have been fluttered about already are Juan Urango, who Ricky previously beat to win the IBF light-welterweight title, Juan Manuel Marquez, Paulie Malignaggi and Amir Khan. There has also been no decision on who will train Hatton. No doubt though that it will be a face close to home, with Lee Beard and Joe Gallagher being touted at the favourites. You can not teach Ricky Hatton anything knew, you must just simply remind him of what he does best.

No this is not a prime Ricky Hatton. No there won’t be anything new in his next performance. And no he won’t be challenging for a pound for pound title. But to Hatton’s fans it was never about that. Micky Ward, Arturo Gatti, Oscar De La Hoya, Muhammed Ali, Mike Tyson. They were all the people’s champions. All had loses. HBO commentator Jim Lampley once asked the question “How does a man with 12 loses on his record as still get this kind of support? You fight like Micky Ward.” This was prior to his legendary last battle with Arturo Gatti. It’s the same case with Ricky Hatton. Fans go to watch him because he is one of the most genuinely nice guys you could ever wish to meet in the sport of boxing. The total opposite of joint pound for pound king, Floyd Mayweather.

Let’s not forget that this was Manny Pacquiao who knocked Hatton out in 2 rounds. Let’s not forget that this was Floyd Mayweather who was given a tough ride for 6 rounds, then ultimately took over and gave one of the best performances of his career to eventually knock out the Hitman. Two of the greatest fighters in modern years. They are the only people to have beaten Hatton. No excuses. He wasn’t as good as Floyd Mayweather or Manny Pacquiao. They were deservedly winners.

But why are people having ago at a man who is going out there to try and entertain them? Write him off on your own peril, as I will no doubt be welcoming back the Hitman when he makes him comeback. We have missed the chant “There’s only one Ricky Hatton”.
