Mayweather vs Marquez: Who Will Really Look Like They Lost Something On 9/19?

mayweather45324445By Quinton Emerson: Much of the talk about this fight has to do with Floyd Mayweather Jr. having lost something since his last fight. Now I admit that’s a possibility, but it’s unlikely. When great fighters lose ability it’s not just because of age. Not taking care of their bodies and bad habits also contribute to that. And as we all know Floyd is a gym rat so that’s not an issue.

What seems to be lost in all this is the fact that Juan Manuel Marquez is 36 years old. Just from watching him on the HBO Mayweather-Marquez 24/7, he comes across as desperate ageing fighter. Why else would he eat raw quail eggs or drink his own urine? Marquez has never been a gifted fighter like a Pacquiao or Mayweather. Marquez is a good fighter that works hard. His biggest strength is his ability to adjust but I question that.

The reason he has to make those adjustments is because of his flaws. In the first fight with Pacquiao, he adjusted after being cut and knocked down three times with the same punch. Now this is not meant to discredit Marquez but rather level out the argument about losing something.

Roy Jones just proved against Jeff Lacy that talent stays past your prime. How much and how long depends on the fighter.

The bottom line is that Floyd is a great fighter. Marquez is a good fighter that comes up short in his biggest moments like Oscar De La Hoya. If Floyd is his old self he might actually stop Marquez. If he’s 70% of his old self he’ll win on points. Either way he wins.

    Dear God
Tyson was indeed a great fighter in his prime, just as Mayweather is indeed today a great fighter. Their ring performances amply confirm this.
It mustn’t be overlooked that Tyson won the World Heavyweight Title at an exceptionally young age, defeating the very best fighters of his day along the way. Unfortunately for him, his mentors, (trainer Cus D’Amato and manager Jim Jeffries)died just when he needed them most, leaving their young charge without the guidance he so patently needed. And so Tyson went completely off the rails, reducing himself to ring mediocrity. That is why we should talk of Tyson as a great fighter ‘in his prime’. The great pity was that this period was all too short.
As for Mayweather, his boxing abilities are supreme.

To Impartial God of Boxing! That’s the greatest piece of writing I’ve read in a long time. I salute you!! You said everything I wanted to say, just way better than i would have. Just like Bob Dylan did in the 60s :)

  • K.O. says:

manny “pacman” pacquaio the mexicutioner. ya dig!!!

  • nyt!nyt1 says:

if marquez is better and gifted than pacquiao, then he should be the champ, but guess what! his not. mayweather vs, pacquaio 2010

  • alan says:

i agree that marquez is better and more gifted than pacquiao.i dont think mayweather looks slow in 24/7.this is goin to be a great fight.

  • CSRCX2 says:

THIS WRITER MUST BE RETARTED…. MARQUEZ IS GREAT AND MORE SKILLED THAN PACQUIAO, PERIOD.

  • mayweather says:

are we still fighting? did anybody really bought any tickets? how come no money is going in my pocket if we are really 90% sold like oskie fishnet said.

  • juneaki says:

To Impartial God of Boxing: Man, you’re a far better writer than Manuel Perez. I agree to all what you wrote.

  • D says:

Anyone who thinks Marquez has a chance is fooled by the hype. Just because a fighter takes a break for a few years does not mean anything. if the boxer is keeping fit and healthy-then there shouldnt be any ring rust. Obviously Floyd is in top notch shape-how about Marquez? I like Marquez and hope he would win but he wont ladies and gentlemen. sorry to burst your bubble. He’s just another hopeful that wont raise his hands up in the end. The fighter however, that i think can win vs floyd jr. is Sugar Shane Mosley and Cotto.

  • Stevey says:

Anyone that says mayweather will be slow or have ring rust is obviously a fool. Mayweather habitually went to his gym even during retirment to work out and from hat it sounds like hes beein working just as hard as ever. From 24/7 it seems as if Nacho knows marquez is screwed when it comes to this fight. And for everyone sayin how big floyd is dont forget he was a lightweight for almost all of his career. Everyone has the same argument of how the “small man” will lose when truth be told they are going to be almost the same wieght.and extra pound or 2 isnt gonna make a differnece. look at mma fighters tiago alves cuts form 220 to 170 but no one says o man hes to big to be fighting these guys

This is what it comes down too
Marquez is a great fighter with heart but Floyd mayweather is much bigger than him so Marquez has to gain weight, so he will be slower and his punches will be stronger , Mayweather wins by decsion Manny PACMAN Paquiaio will knock out Mayweather PACMAn is the best fighter since Tyson and Muhamid Ali hands down all u are wrong..

  • Martin says:

Marquez will win. He has alot of heart. And this is his chance and I think he is working really hard for this fight. It’s gonna be mayweather’s first loss Pretty boy( I would say ugly mothaf***a)

  • MBA says:

Marquez has nothing to lose and everything to gain in this fight…that cannot be the case of Floyd..the pressure is much on him to win convincingly and not just to win..they are using one another for a chance to fight Pacquiao or whosoever will win between Manny and Miguel.

  • euclid says:

well dynamite dean no one wins in that fight becuase it will never happen..the question is..mayweather pacquiao? who wins

  • pizat says:

money may kos marquez early………ya dig????

  • Rau says:

I’m more concerned of Marquez’s speed as he traded it off for muscle. As for his stamina, I think he’ll hold up well as he always has been impressive in the later rounds of his past fights.

  • Dynamite Dean says:

Maybe marquez, dont think the extra weight will do him any good. He is a naturally smaller fighter than Mayweather…How will his stamina hold up with that extra muscle?

    Mayweather by UD

    Cotto by SD

Mayweather v Cotto 2010, who wins???

  • Quinton says:

thanks for the feedback guys. Oli when i say he’s not gifted i mean he’s not exceptional in any particular area. Speed, Footwork, Power ect he’s doesn’t excel in any of those areas. Also he doesn’t move his head until another fighter moves it for him

  • Oli says:

did you say marquez is not a gifted fighter? are you stupid? win or lose (and he’l probably lose) marquez is one of the best fighters in the world

  • hellboy says:

Dang that wannabe writer manuel Perez banned me from posting on his “articles”. I was just speaking the truth. Mayweather puts a beat down on Marquez.

  • \m/ says:

i have no doubt floyd jr. will annihilate marquez. this will be floyd jr. shining moment and biggest hurra since hatton. all my money to the last cent to gamble on floyd jr. tko.

  • trossig says:

maywheather looks slower and looks like hes lost alot of stamina while hes been off for 2 years Marquez has been keeping busy fighting top fighters like manny pacquiao, casamoyar and diaz he may be going up 2 weight divisions but his determination and heart alone will be more then anything to defeat a ring rusty fighter like maywheather.

  • 999sab says:

Mayweather is the greatest fighter since Tyson was in his prime.
