HBO Needs to liven up Mayweather-Marquez 24/7

marquez53454By Manuel Perez: I doubt that I’m the only one that thinks that the HBO Mayweather-Marquez 24/7 reality series is boring as heck. After being bored to tears watching Freddie Roach compete with Manny Pacquiao for air time on the Hatton-Pacquiao 24/7 last time out, I had low expectations about this one.

But gosh, this is even duller than that. At least with Hatton-Pacquiao, you had to stay alert to try and understand what the heck Roach and Pacquiao were talking about.

Roach was hilarious to watch just because he always seemed to be talking up himself up, giving himself a pat on the back for this and that. But the Mayweather-Marquez series is almost worthless to watch. I can’t stand to watch more than a minute of it without needing a big cup of coffee to stay awake.

You got Marquez sitting with his kids a birthday party, helping his son with his match homework or worse, drinking his pee and telling it will make him better. I guess in a way it made good television, kind of like watching a horrible car wreck type of way.

I mean, Marquez is a great fighter, but I can only watch him throw so many rocks, and eat so many quail eggs before I lose interest altogether. And Mayweather is even worse. It’s like a replay of his other HBO 24/7 series with Ricky Hatton and Oscar De La Hoya.

Mayweather shows off his crib, talks about how stinking rich he is, and then moans about his aches and pains. He doesn’t want to let you see him spar, so we’re forced to see the after effects of some poor sap, which ends up getting beaten up during sparring and then filmed by HBO.

I wouldn’t let that happen. If HBO tried to film me after I got beaten up in sparring, I’d throw a towel over the camera or duck. Who wants to be seen like that? It like, here, lets all see Manuel get humiliated in front of the camera. No thank you. The series is kind of interesting to watch when Marquez is being filmed, because he at least has charisma and personality.

But when Mayweather is on, the sense of drama drops completely. He just doesn’t seem to have any physical presence. To me, Mayweather always looks like he’s about to cry for some reason. He’ll talk big, but he seems way too sensitive, like a grown up kid. Since we’re only able to see Mayweather hitting a heavy bag, the series is pretty much left to watching him work out on pads. That’s very boring.

I’m not into watching that kind of garbage. The sparring for Marquez is okay, but they only showed a second or two of it and the guy that he’s sparring doesn’t look good at all. I think I could beat him and I’m only 5’6”. What HBO needs to is waive some money under Andre Berto’s snoot and get him down to Mexico to spar with Marquez.

Now that would be worthwhile seeing. With that kind of sparring, I could see Marquez beating Mayweather without any problems. HBO needs to do something to shake this boring 24/7 series up. Maybe take them out to the desert and have Marquez spar with his brother Rafael where actually trying to beat each other up.

We’d have the whole brother vs. brother drama going and it would make for good television. Just limit Mayweather to a small segment, because with his new image makeover, it’s too boring for me to watch him for more than a second without wanting to turn the channel. Same old close ups, same hound dog look to him like he’s about to cry when he mentions his family.
