Roy Jones Jr. vs. Calzaghe Looks To Be Next

calzaghe7533.jpgBy Eric Thomas: In the latest news, former champion Roy Jones Jr. (52-4, 38 KOs) made it clear after last night’s win by Joe Calzaghe over Bernard Hopkins that he wants to fight Calzaghe next, even if it means having to travel all the way to Wales to make the fight happen. The fight, if it happens, would likely be as big as the Hopkins bout despite Jones, 39, being a level below Hopkins at this stage in his career. The question is, would Calzaghe, 36, be interested in a bout with Jones? He has already said that he wants to be well paid in his last bout of his career, and a bout with Jones would figure to pay more than any other fight that Calzaghe would have on the horizon against one of the younger stars in the boxing world like Kelly Pavlik.

Jones reportedly wasn’t impressed with the Calzaghe-Hopkins bout, feeling that he could have done a better job than Hopkins, who mainly held onto Calzaghe, slowing the fight down, and landing mostly one shot at a time in the bout. Indeed, that would be easy to say, because even though Jones has slowed down somewhat in terms of hand speed, he still throws fast combinations and hasn’t shown the tendency to cling on his opponents like Hopkins has in recent years.

It would be interesting to see how well Jones, who was the best fighter in boxing for almost a decade from the 1990s to 2000, does against a fighter with equally fast hands like Calzaghe. In his prime, this would have been an intriguing bout to say the least but even now, at the ripe age of 39, Jones has the size, speed and power to present a lot of problems for Calzaghe, perhaps even more than Hopkins. It won’t hard for him to top the excitement of the Hopkins bout, since the fight turned out to be dull due to Hopkins clinching and grabbing.

    Scoot:

Roy would embaress Joe! Roy has the power to beat a heaveyweight, does Joe have the power to even match up with Roy? HELL NO! Roy Jones Jr hands down, and to this day…Tarver still got lucky!

    John:

haha r people living in a dream world ? if calzaghe fights roy jones jr then he will get knocked out cold, jones is way too fast, he is a far better boxer and he hits alot harder, calzaghe will be shamed if he fights jones, i know roy is 39 but thats only 3 years older than calzaghe so stop with all this about calzaghe fighting old men, calzaghe legacy will be destroyed if he fights jones, forget it joe, u r a hometown fighter, keep it that way or your in for a big surprise

    Anonymous:

why doesnt calzaghe retire before jones knocks his ass out, calzaghe has been saying that he wants to retire undefeated, if thats the case then why is he lookin at a fight with jones ? jones will do damage to calzaghe, forget all these fights with tarver or taylor, my gran could beat those 2, jones is the only fight left for calzaghe but it will be his first loss, and his first knockout loss

    ZKO:

Roy is faster than Calzaghe, but he does not throw enough combinations and if he couldn’t knock out Tito, I’m not sure how he would win against Calzaghe.

    Anonymous:

A field day with what man? Calz hand speed is not par with Roys. Roy Does chill on ropes 2 often but Calz couldnt knock out a sleeping dog so that wont be a problem. Like TITO if u cant hurt Roy and u cant match his speed then he will pick u apart. Joe is on limited time and will look 2 retire b4 seeing any pressure fighter. What A turd.

    ZKO:

I do not see Jones matching up well with Calzaghe. Jones does not have stamina and tends to let his opponents hit him with combinations on the ropes… Calzaghe will have a field day with that, especially with his hand speed. It’s all good though, Calzaghe’s finally cashing in and if he ever fights Tarver, that would be his first loss.

    stanley:

This Mr calzaghe should stop fighting this fading fighters and fight the real present fighters like Taylor, pavlik. he need to prove to people that he is a real fighter, fighting someone who is 43 years old and wining a controversial split decision is not something calzaghe can be proud of, he has been fighting low standard fighters all his time, he can not claim to be a better fighter. and now he wants to fight another fading fighter who has not fought for about a year now. what a shame. fight real boxers not that substandard and fading aged boxers.

    Nathan Ward:

Al Marchio - that might be the dumbest comment I have seen. If he wants toe to toe action, how about the fighter that kicked Zuniga all around the ring and then Knocked him out in the 9th round. KELLY the ghost Pavlik is that fighter that will put him in his place. However he will fight all the old names like Hopkins, Jones, or Tarver. Run from the best in their prime Joe.

    Al Marchio:

Joe Calzaghe should fight Fulgencio Zuniga next, toe to toe action and not dancing with the stars of the past.
