Image: Matthysse-Olusegun: A good test for LucasBy Dan Ambrose: Lucas Matthysse (31-2, 29 KO’s) and Ajose Olusegun (30-0, 14 KO’s) will be fighting over the interim WBC light welterweight title on September 8th in the United States. For Matthysse, 29, this will be his first real test since he was beaten by Devon Alexander in June of last year.

Matthysse has taken it easy for the most part since then. He did face former WBC lightweight champion Humberto Soto last month on June 23rd, but Soto didn’t look good at that in the new weight class for him, and he seemed to never recover after getting hurt after the bell in the 2nd round.

Matthysse really wants a title shot after missing out on a fight for the vacant WBA light welterweight belt last year when he got sick with the flu while scheduled to fight Erik Morales in September of 2011. The illness wiped out what likely would have been a big win for Matthysse. Instead of getting the Morales fight and the nice payday that went along with it, Matthysse had to settle for facing Sergio Omar Priotti and Angel Martinez, knocking them both out without any problems.

Olusegun could make it hard for Matthhyse to win this fight because of his good power, aggressive style of fighting and high workrate. Olusegin is capable of throwing a ton of punches and giving Matthysse big problems. Olusegun defeated Ali Chebah by a 12 round unanimous decision last September in a fight that was aired by Showtime in the United States. Olusegun was hoping to use that win as a springboard to get a title shot against WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia, but he instead chose to skip his mandatory defense against Olusegun and face Amir Khan instead.

Olusegun will lock himself in for a title shot against the winner of the October bout between Garcia and Erik Morales.

It’s going to be tough for Olusegun to get past Matthysse, because he’s such a good body puncher and has great boxing skills. But if there’s anyone that can beat Matthysse, it’s Olusegun due to his all out attacking fighting style. If Matthysse doesn’t get Olusegun out of there it’s going to be tough on him.
