By William Lloyd: IBF featherweight champion Kid Galahad successfully made weight on Friday after coming in at 125 1/4 pounds at the weigh-in for his title defense against former IBF super featherweight champion Kiko Martinez (42-10-2, 29 KOs) this Saturday night at the Sheffield Arena in Sheffield, UK. Martinez, 35, weighed in at 125 1/4 lbs as well, so the fight is on!

In the first weigh-in attempt, Galahad weighed in over the limit at 126.1 lbs. After two hours to take the weight off, Galahad, 31, returned to the scales and successfully weighed in at 125 1/4 lbs.

This will be the first defense for Galahad (28-1, 17 KOs) of his IBF featherweight title after capturing the vacant strap last August by stopping James ‘Jazza’ Dickens in the 11th round.

It should be a good fight as long as Martinez hangs in there. Having lost to Zelfa Barrett earlier this year by a 12 round unanimous decision, you can’t say that Kiko has earned the right to challenge Galahad for his title.

Martinez has obviously been chosen for the fight because he’s well known to boxing fans, and he can give a good fight without potentially beating Galahad.

Hearn wants Galahad to stay champion, and if he put him in with a dangerous featherweight like Rey Vargas or Mauricio Lara, the outcome wouldn’t be as certain.

“Kiko Martinez was bang on the weight. His last couple of fights have been at super feather but he is but featherweight is his weight,” said Eddie Hearn to Boxing Social.

“He looked strong, looked ready. I think we’re going to get a great fight. I expect Kid Galahad to win this fight, but that’s why we chose Kiko Martinez. He’s going to give everything he’s got while he’s in that ring.

“He [WBA ‘regular featherweight champion Leigh Wood] probably wants the City Grounds and Michael Conlan probably wants Belfast. Also, Madison Square Garden,” said Hearn about champion Leigh Wood and #1 WBA challenger Conlan in talking about the location for their fight.

“For me, it’s Madison Square Garden or the City Grounds. I think to do a fight at Madison Square Garden, and I’ve always wanted to do a fight at Nottingham Forrest Ground. I’m not just saying it.

“When we had [Carl] Froch, we never had the opportunity to do it. I think the whole city would come out and support him, but ultimately it’ll be down to the broadcaster and the way the schedule sits to say, ‘Okay, we want it on UK fight time or we want it on U.S fight time.’

“Nothing is decided yet, but it will be in the next week. It’s just a massive fight brewing, and obviously, they’ll [Wood and Conlan] have one on tomorrow as well because Kid Galahad could be fighting the winner,” said Hearn.
