By Jim Dower: Featherweight contender Christopher “Pitufo” Díaz (24-1, 16 KOs) destroyed a badly over-matched journeyman David Berna (17-6, 16 Ks) by a 1st round knockout on Saturday night at the Sheraton Puerto Rico Hotel & Casino in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

#6 WBO Diaz, 24, nailed Berna with a hard left hook that sent him down. The referee then stopped the contest. The official time of the stoppage was at 1:08 of round 1.

The victory for Diaz was his first since losing a wide 12 round unanimous decision to Masayuki Ito last July in a failed attempt to win the vacant World Boxing Organisation World Super Featherweight Title at the Kissimmee Civic Center, Kissimmee, Florida.

In other boxing action on the card, WBO Latino featherweight champion Luis Lebrón (14-0-1, 7 KOs) defeated Luis May (21-11-1, 8 KOs) by a one-sided ten round unanimous decision. The judges’ scores were 100-90, 100-90 and 100-90. Boxing News 24 scored it for Lebron by a 10 rounds to 0 score. Lebron is capable of beating much better opposition than this. It’s a waste of time for Lebron to still be facing journeyman level opposition at this point in his career. May lacked the boxing skills and the power to give Lebron any kind of a real fight last Saturday night.

Unbeaten featherweight prospect Joseph Adorno (11-0, 10 KOs) stayed unbeaten with a 4th round knockout win over journeyman Luis Gerardo Avila (8-14-3, 5 KOs). Adorno knocked Avila down. The referee then stepped in and hurriedly stopped the contest due to Avila being too hurt to continue. The time of the stoppage was at 1:42 of round four. Earlier in the fight, Adorno knocked the tough Mexican fighter Avila down twice in round one. Avila showed a lot of heart to make it through the 1st round to make it to the 4th.

The knockout for the 19-year-old Adorno was his 10th in his 11-fight career. Avila, 26, suffered his third defeat in his last four fights. It was only the fourth knockout defeat for Avila during 11-year pro career. The fact that Adorno was able to knockout Avila shows the kind of power he’s got going for him, given how difficult it is to KO him.

Super featherweight prospect Henry Lebron (7-0, 5 KOs) stopped 23-year-old Hungarian Mark Szoros (5-5, 3 KOs) in the 1st round. It was a good win for Lebron in showing off the kind of power that he has going for him. Lebron knocked Szoros down three separate times in the 1st round before the referee stepped in to halt the fight. The official time of the stoppage was at 1:53 of round one.
