Kenny Porter expects Keith Thurman to throw punches while running the opposite direction

thurman8By Tim Fletcher: Former IBF welterweight champion Shawn Porter’s father/trainer Kenny Porter says he thinks that WBA World welterweight champion Keith “One Time” Porter (26-0, 22 KOs) will be on the retreat whenever he throws power shots in their fight on March 12 next month at the Mohegan Sun Casino, in Uncasville, Connecticut.

Kenny is familiar with Thurman from both the amateurs and pros, and he knows that Thurman prefers to land sneaky power shots rather than standing in the pocket and trading shots. Thurman is always looking to avoid getting hit by his opponents, and he’s not going to stand in the pocket and let his hands go the way some fighters do.

Thurman: I plan on hurting Porter

thurman7777By Dan Ambrose: In a month from now on March 12, WBA “regular” welterweight champion Keith “One Time” Thurman (26-0, 22 KOs) will be facing what could be the toughest opponent of his career in Shawn Porter (26-1-1, 16 KOs) at the Mohegan Sun Casino, in Uncasville, Connecticut.

Thurman, 27, doesn’t think that Porter will be able to handle his punching power, and he expects to hurt him constantly. Thurman isn’t sure whether he’ll be able to KO him, but he does feel confident that he’ll be able to put him down on the canvas like he’s done with some of his recent opponents Robert Guerrero and Leonard Bundu. Thurman had them down but he couldn’t KO them.

“The two most recent fights that went 12 rounds were Robert Guerrero and Bundu,” Thurman said to Michelle Joy Phelps from Behind the Gloves.

Thurman wants Danny Garcia after Porter fight

Keith ThurmanBy Dan Ambrose: WBA World welterweight champion Keith “One Time” Thurman (26-0, 22 KOs) hasn’t even gotten past his next opponent Shawn Porter (26-1-1, 16 KOs) and he’s already targeting his next opponent in WBC welterweight champion Danny Garcia.

Thurman, 27, says he wants to collect more belts after the Porter fight, and he wants to face Garcia after this. Thurman is less interested in a unification fight against IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook, because he wants to focus on fighters that are well known in the U.S. Brook would be an unknown in the States.

Mosley impressed with Shawn Porter’s punching power

mosley5By Dan Ambrose: After sparring seven rounds with former IBF welterweight champion Shawn Porter (26-1-1, 16 KOs) this past week, 44-year-old Shane Mosley came away from the experience very impressed with Porter’s punching power, aggression and overall talent.

Mosley sees the 28-year-old Porter as a very tough challenger for WBA welterweight champion Keith “One Time” Thurman (26-0, 22 KOs) to deal with in their fight on March 12 on Premier Boxing Champions on CBS at the Mohegan Sun Casino, in Uncasville, Connecticut.

Porter’s trainer hopes Thurman brings his hook on March 12

Keith Thurman and Shawn PorterBy Dan Ambrose: Trainer Kenny Porter hopes WBA World welterweight champion Keith Thurman (26-0, 22 KOs) brings his hook with him on March 12 and tries to use it against his son Shawn Porter (26-1-1, 16 KOs), because they intend on punishing Thurman with a counter hook. They want to bust up Thurman and bruise him badly.

Kenny expects Thurman to come out trying to throw hooks, because he’ll have watched Porter’s last fight against Adrien Broner last year and saw how Porter was knocked down by a left hook in the 12th round of that contest. Thurman’s favorite weapon is his left hook, and he loves to throw that shot while he’s moving backwards around the ring.

Keith Thurman: I’m going to work on the inside against Porter a little

Image: Keith Thurman: I'm going to work on the inside against Porter a little(Photo credit Esther Lin/SHOWTIME) By Dan Ambrose: WBA World 147lb champion Keith “One Time” Thurman (27-0, 22 KOs) says he’s going to show some inside fighting in his title defense against Shawn Porter (26-1-1, 16 KOs) on March 12 at the Mohegan Sun Casino, in Uncasville, Connecticut.

Thurman says he’s going to pick a time in the fight where he’s going to show the fans that he can fight on the inside. In other words, Thurman is going to briefly fight on the inside. I don’t know if you can count that as fighting on the inside when it’s only going to be for a short period of time.

Thurman says he won’t hold Porter like Kell Brook did

Keith Thurman(Photo credit: Esther Lin/SHOWTIME) By Scott Gilfoid: WBA “regular” welterweight champion Keith “One Time” Thurman (27-0, 22 KOs) says he doesn’t plan on going out there and holding all night long against Shawn Porter (26-1-1, 16 KOs) in his fight against him on March 12 like Kell Brook did when he fought Porter in 2014.

Brook was holding constantly to keep Porter from throwing punches, and the referee was asleep at the wheel and just Brook hold all night without stepping in and doing his job to take points off and disqualify if need be. Thurman says he’s not going to follow the Brook holding blueprint when he faces Porter two months from now.

Keith Thurman to defend against Shawn Porter on March 12th on Showtime

Keith Thurman and Shawn Porter(Photo credit Esther Lin/SHOWTIME) By Dan Ambrose: WBA “regular” welterweight champion Keith Thurman will be taking the toughest test of his career on Showtime against Shawn Porter on 3/12 at the Mohegan Sun Casino Resort in Connecticut. This will be a big test for both fighters, especially the 27-year-old Thurman, who sees himself as the replacement for Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Thurman has talked big but done little thus far with his career as far as taking on dangerous opponents. What Thurman has been good at is beating yesterday’s names. He’s beaten fighters like Robert Guerrero, Luis Collazo, Julio Diaz, Carlos Quintana and Jan Zaveck. Those were pretty much the best fighters Thurman has faced.

Keith Thurman – Shawn Porter tickets on sale today for March 12th fight

thurman66By Dan Ambrose: Tickets go on sale today for the March 12th fight between WBA “regular’ welterweight champion Keith “One Time” Thurman (26-0, 22 KOs) and Shawn Porter (26-1-1, 16 KOs) at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut.

This is a long overdue fight for the 27-year-old Thurman, who has somehow fought his entire nine-year pro career without taking a really difficult opponent. Thurman won his WBA title without having to fight anyone, as he went from interim WBA 147lb champion to regular WBA champion outside of the ring.

This should be an interesting fight for both guys. Porter is coming off of a big win over Adrien Broner last year in June. Porter was interested in facing Broner in a rematch, but the interest unfortunately reciprocal. A second loss for Broner to Porter would have likely been fatal to his career.

Shawn Porter to fight Keith Thurman on 3/12

porter6809By Dan Ambrose: Last Saturday night, former IBF welterweight champion Shawn “Showtime” Porter (26-1-1, 16 KOs) revealed to Showtime Sports that a deal is being finalized for him to face WBA World welterweight champion Keith “One Time” Thurman (26-0, 22 KOs) on March 12 at a still to be determined venue. Porter will be looking to capture Thurman’s WBA title and return to a world championship status. Porter lost his IBF 147lb title to British fighter Kell Brook by a 12 round decision in 2014 in a close fight.

“I’m being told that that fight is being finalized and will be taking place March 12,” Porter said to Showtime. “I’ll be ready for the fight and March 12 can’t come any sooner!” No venue has been named.”

This should be a good 50-50 fight. Some fans believe that Thurman will be able to outbox Porter the same way that Brook did by using a lot of jabbing and holding. The holding might not work against Porter, but the jabbing could be successful if Porter isn’t able to duck under the shots.
