Matthysse vs. Provodnikov looking good for March 28th in Atlantic City, NJ

matthysse84By Dan Ambrose: An exciting fight between light welterweight contenders Lucas Matthysse (36-3, 34 KOs) and Ruslan Provodnikov (24-3, 17 KOs) is looking good for March 28th in Atlantic City, New Jersey, according for Steve Kim. This is a great fight if it can get put together.

Matthysse hasn’t faced a big name since his loss to Danny Garcia in 2013, and Provodnikov is still trying to turn his career around after getting out-boxed by Chris Algieri last year in June in losing his WBO light welterweight title.

Lucas Matthysse vs. Ruslan Provodnikov in the works for March or April

matthysse233By Dan Ambrose: A clash between #2 WBO light welterweight contender Lucas Matthysse (36-3, 34 KOs) and former WBO 140 pound champion Ruslan Provodnikov (24-3, 17 KOs) is in the works for March or April this year.

Both fighters are up for the clash, and their promoters are on board for the fight as well. Provodnikov’s promoter Artie Pelullo wants to make the fight happen. However, if he’s unable to negotiate the fight, he’ll look to match the 30-year-old Provodnikov up against either Manny Pacquiao or Brandon Rios, according to RingTV.

Provodnikov targeting Maidana, Matthysse and Danny Garcia for next fight on March 28th

provodnikov034By Dan Ambrose: #2 WBO light welterweight contender Ruslan Provodnikov (24-3, 17 KOs) will be back in the ring in the next three months on March 28th in a fight that will take place at a still to be determined venue in the United States.

Provodnikov, 30, is hoping that he can get one of the following fighters to agree to face him: Marcos Maidana, Danny Garcia or Lucas Matthysse. The problem is that those fighters are managed by Al Haymon, and it’s highly doubtful that Haymon will bother setting them up for a dangerous fight against a slugger like Provodnikov when there’s not much of any upside.

Provodnikov stops Castillo in 5 rounds

YouTube video
By Dan Ambrose: In a less than impressive performance earlier tonight, former WBO light welterweight champion Ruslan Provodnikov (24-3, 17 KOs) chopped down 40-year-old former IBF lightweight champion Jose Luis Castillo (66-13-1, 57 KOs) in a 5th round knockout at the Luzhniki GCKZ “Russia” Arena in Moscow.

Provodnikov hurt Castillo with a left hook to the head in the 5th that put him on the canvas. Moments later, Castillo hit the deck for the second and final time after getting hit with some hard hooks.

Castillo did a good job of holding his own in the first three rounds of the fight, as he was able to avoid most of Provodnikov’s big power shots. Castillo nailed Provodnikov frequently with uppercuts while in close, and he did a superb job of negating the Russian fighter’s offense.

Provodnikov taking risky fight against Castillo on 11/28

provodnikov74By Dan Ambrose: Former WBO 140lb champion Ruslan Provodnikov’s fight against 40-year-old former WBC lightweight champion Jose Luis Castillo (66-12-1, 57 KOs) on November 28th is perceived as a one-sided mismatch in the eyes of many boxing experts.

To be sure, it would seem likely that Provodnikov will wear Castillo down at some point in the fight and score a knockout. However, the fight could spell danger for Provodnikov if Castillo decides to use his boxing skills to try and win a decision rather than him going to war with Provodnikov.
