Will Mayweather fight Maidana in New York on September 13th?

floyd00001By Gavin “Neds” O’Connor: In sports there are some truly iconic stadiums and venues the world over football has Wembley (in London, UK), F1 Grand Prix has the playground of the rich and famous, the Monaco racing circuit , New York and baseball have the Yankee stadium and boxing has Las Vegas venues and the MGM Grand the mecca of modern boxing.

It has over the year’s showcased the biggest names in boxing, records have been made and broken millions won and lost legends created and dreams shattered. And over the last few years it has become the personal domain of boxing’s biggest pay per view star Floyd Mayweather Jr, but this was not always the case.

Garcia: Broner could face Matthysse in co-feature on Mayweather vs. Maidana II card

broner455By Allan Fox: If the Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Marcos Maidana rematch does become a reality on September 13th, we could be seeing an equally important fight between Adrien Broner (28-1, 22 KO’s) and #2 WBC, #2 WBO, #3 IBF Lucas Matthysse (35-3, 33 KO’s) in the co-feature bout on the card, according to Maidana’s trainer Robert Garcia. He says that’s what he’s hearing will be the co-feature on the card.

“I’m hearing Adrien Broner vs. Lucas Matthysse,” Garcia said. “They said co-main event on Maidana-Mayweather.”

Mayweather’s unfinished business with Maidana

floyd777771By Anthony Mason: With the rematch between Mayweather and Maidana pretty much guaranteed, fans can look forward to one of the biggest fights of 2014. Although Maidana is the best option by default, it does not hide that Mayweather’s record is the product of a watered down era on top of his extremely low activity, with only 46 fights in 18 years.

Instead of feasting on the likes of Canelo or Maidana, he could have tried to find his inner Duran and move up in weight to fight prime versions of Paul Williams or Sergio Martinez, far more accomplished boxers than the vast majority of Floyd’s opponents. Even the accomplished boxers on Mayweather’s resume came with caveats.

Maidana’s adviser says Mayweather’s management hasn’t contacted them yet about rematch

maidana5By Dan Ambrose: Sebastian Contursi, the adviser for former WBA welterweight champion Marcos Maidana (35-4, 31 KO’s), says that the rumors that have been floating around recently about a Maidana vs. Floyd Mayweather Jr rematch are totally untrue, as there’s been no contact from Mayweather’s management about putting together a rematch for September 13th.

Maidana and his team are obviously interested in that fight very much, because they feel that they beat Mayweather last May in their fight at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. They want to prove for a second time they’re better than Mayweather.

Has Mayweather put Maidana in his black list?

mayweather9933By Yannis Mihanos: Floyd Mayweather Jr. (46-0, 26 KO’s) after his gutsy victory over Marcos Maidana (35-4, 31 KO’s) earlier this month, he now seems to be close sending the hard hitter from Argentina to the unwanted list of his personal choices. It’s looking like Mayweather will pass up on the idea of giving Maidana a rematch in September.

There are two main reasons why this is happening: First is the most obvious and it has to do with the money that their fight produced on Showtime pay-per-view. Even if the official results have not yet been revealed, it is evidence the financial failure. One vague estimation comes to around 800.000-900.000 PPV buys for the fight. Obviously that’s not a satisfying number for a guy like Floyd and TV channel Showtime. The poor marketing preparation for the fight (with only two and a half months to market the fight) had an impact on the sales. The fight needed more time to be marketed.

Maidana doubts he’ll get rematch with Mayweather

floyd8282828By Dan Ambrose: Marcos Maidana (35-4, 31 KO’s) has doubts that he’ll be selected for a second fight against WBA/WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. (46-0, 26 KO’s) for September 13th. Maidana doesn’t know for sure that he’s not going to get a rematch, but he suspects Mayweather will go in another direction and face someone else instead of him the next time he gets in the ring.

What Maidana working against him is that Mayweather’s father Floyd Sr. wasn’t too happy in watching his son get fouled repeatedly by Maidana in Mayweather’s 12 round majority decision win on May 3rd, and he’s told him not to fight Maidana again. Just how much persuasion Floyd Sr. has with Mayweather Jr. is debatable. If Mayweather wants the fight with Maidana, he’d likely take it no matter what his father says. But if he chooses not to give Maidana a second fight, it would be due to a combination of things rather than just one single issue such as him being fouled all night by him.

Maidana Tells Trainer Robert Garcia “He’ll Retire” If He Doesn’t Get The Mayweather Rematch

maidana45By Rocky Esposito: Ring Magazine “Trainer of the Year” Robert Garcia told ESNEWS in an interview yesterday that Marcos “El Chino” Maidana (35-4 / 31 KOs) has informed him that he will retire if he does not get the rematch with Floyd “Money” Mayweather. At first, Robert Garcia’s tone and demeanor in the interview seemed to be as if he was just kidding around. He even joked and said “He (Maidana) has a 100 cows, he’s already set for life”. However, when he elaborated on the topic, he switched modes and said Maidana was in fact serious.

As a Boxing fan, I enjoy watching Marcos Maidana fight. Ever since his first fight in the United States, when he upset Victor Ortiz back on 6/27/09, you knew he was a talented, action packed fighter with a ton of heart. Also, since he has teamed up with Robert Garcia, he has never looked better in his entire professional career. I even give his Strength and Conditioning Coach Alex Ariza a ton of credit. Maidana was in the best shape of his life vs Mayweather and it showed in his performance.

Mayweather-Maidana PPV numbers in 800-900 K range, according to Rafael’s sources

mayweather9933By Allan Fox: Dan Rafael of ESPN says that his sources in the boxing industry tell him that the Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Marcos Maidana fight brought in just 800,000 to 900,000 pay-per-view buys on Showtime PPV this month. The numbers still haven’t been officially released by Showtime, and Arum believes this could be a sign that the fight failed to bring in crazy numbers like they were obviously hoping it would be.

Golden Boy Promotions did their part in trying to hit it out of the park by adding Adrien Broner and Amir Khan to the undercard of the Mayweather-Maidana fight card. It was thought that having those two fighters on the card would mean that they could expect over 1 million buys at the minimum.

Mayweather should forget about Maidana rematch

floyd8822By Chris Williams: WBA/WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr’s recent win over Marcos Maidana (35-4, 31 KO’s) was a costly one for him, because he suffered a cut over his right eye after a head clash early in the fight. The cut will take time to heal, and there’s a good chance that it’ll open up as soon as Mayweather takes a hard shot on that eye in his next fight in September.

Mayweather’s father thinks it’s just not worth it for him to fight Maidana again because of the fouling that he might do. Floyd Sr. feels that Maidana plays it too rough when he fights, and it’s not worth the trouble to fight him because of the way he bends the rules.
