Roach: Mayweather is too small for Cotto at middleweight

roach4523By Chris Williams: WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto’s trainer Freddie Roach thinks Floyd Mayweather Jr would be barking up the wrong tree if he were to move up to the 160 pound division to challenge the 34-year-old Cotto for his World Boxing Council title.

Roach thinks that Mayweather would be too small if he were to move up a couple of divisions to face Cotto, even though Mayweather currently holds the WBA/WBC junior middleweight titles and is actually taller than the 5’7” Cotto.

Cotto an Mayweather Jr. are in two different classes. Why the rematch would not get a passing grade

cotto3e3432By Shaun La: It is difficult not to appreciate Miguel Cotto (39-4, 32 KOs) in the sport of boxing. He is quiet, ambitious and the current WBC middleweight world champion who ascended thru the weight classes with hard fought bouts.

Where he stands in the arena of great Puerto Rican boxers can be linked to fulfilling the energy of success in the boxing ring left by Wilfred Benítez, Héctor Camacho to Félix Trinidad. Cotto shows up to box who is in front of him with a fortitude that earns your respect, win or lose.

Despite the hype, Floyd will likely take on Cotto

cotto22By Jaime Ortega: Yesterday, Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr coincidentally met in Miami in the sidelines of the basketball court, on a night where the Miami Heat played against the Bucks.

Pacquiao and Floyd had never met before, so the video images showing them talk have made headlines all around the world.

For fans this unexpected meeting came as a surprise. I have to admit that I was surprised to see Floyd briefly chat with Pacquiao, shaking hands and exchanging phone numbers to supposedly discuss the memo of written agreements before signing the final contract according to ESPN correspondent Dan Rafael.

Haymon offering Cotto $40 million to face Mayweather?

cotto75By Dan Ambrose: High powered adviser Al Haymon has allegedly offered WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto $40 million to face superstar Floyd Mayweather Jr, according to The Sport Press.

This hasn’t been confirmed to be true as of yet, but if does turn out to be true then it would be a huge amount of money for the 34-year-old Cotto. With that kind of money the assumption would be that the Mayweather-Cotto 2 fight would do over 2 million pay-per-view buys, and it’s highly doubtful that it could bring in those kinds of numbers unless the fight card was totally loaded with big stars from top to bottom.

Roach says Cotto wants Mayweather rematch

mayweather223By Dan Ambrose: Trainer Freddie Roach says his fighter Miguel Cotto (37-4, 30 KO’s) is gunning for a big rematch against Floyd Mayweather Jr. in 2014 after Cotto takes care of his opponent for this Saturday night Devlin Rodriguez (28-6-3, 16 KO’s) and then beats either Saul “Canelo” Alvarez or Sergio Martinez.

This could be the only way that one of Roach’s fighters is able to face Mayweather Jr., as we already saw how Roach’s #1 fighter Manny Pacquiao had a couple chances to fight Mayweather go up in smoke for various reasons.
