Can Mayweather vs. Alvarez beat the record 2.4 millions PPV’s?

23(Photo credit: Naoki Fakuda) By Michael Turturice: In May of 2007, the pay per view record was set at 2.4 million Buys for the Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Oscar Del La Hoya fight in Las Vegas, Nevada. Now the question is can this Saturday’s card between Mayweather Jr. and WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-0-1, 30 KO’s) at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada overtake that lofty number?

I watched the 2007 Mayweather-De La Hoya fight and really enjoyed every round. Yes, Mayweather won that fight by a 12 round split decision with his mid-fight adjustments surpassing the solid effect by the Golden Boy De La Hoya. Thinking back on that fight, I can’t remember who else stepped in the ring that night; and this is where I think this upcoming card has a chance.

Canelo still looking heavy; will he miss the 152 lb. catch-weight?

12(Photo credit: Naoki Fakuda) By Dan Ambrose: In photos taken of WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-0-1, 30 KO’s) from yesterday, it looks as if Canelo is still in the 160 lbs. region, and it’s unclear right now from lacking at his photos if he’s going to be able to take off the remaining weight to get down to the 152 pound catch-weight, if he does plan on making that weight.

You can see his mouth is totally dehydrated, and he looks like he’s not drinking water. You have to wonder how many days Canelo has had to limit his liquids to drop weight to where he is now. Canelo should be a lot thinner than he is if he were close to the 152 lb. weight, but he’s not looking skeletal yet like we frequently see Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. when he dehydrates to make weight.

Broner picks Mayweather over Canelo by stoppage

10(Photo credit: Naoki Fakuda) By Eric Thomas: Adrien Broner has no doubts in his mind that his “big brother” Floyd Mayweather Jr. (44-0, 26 KO’s) will take care of business on Saturday night against Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-0-1, 30 KO’s) at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

While Mayweather Jr. isn’t what you’d call a knockout puncher, Broner thinks he’s got enough power to stop the stocky Canelo late in this fight. Broner sees it lasting 9 or 10 rounds before Mayweather Jr. gets to Canelo and takes him out with some big shots.

Mayweather Jr. doesn’t have junior middleweight power for him to be stopping someone as large as Canelo. Sometimes a lighter fighter can stop a bigger guy if he gets tired, but that might be the only way Mayweather will get a stoppage in this fight.

Mayweather: Canelo is not the future; I’m not losing

Floyd Mayweather(Photo credit: Esther Line/Showtime) By Dan Ambrose: Floyd Mayweather Jr. (44-0, 26 KO’s) says he doesn’t intend on losing to WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-0-1, 30 KO’s) this Saturday night in their fight in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Mayweather Jr. says he’ll beat the 23-year-old Canelo, but he believes the red-haired Mexican fighter will rebound from the defeat and still be a star. However, Mayweather Jr. doesn’t believe Canelo will be the guy in boxing.

Mayweather Jr. doesn’t say who will be the next big star to carry the sport, but he feels Canelo lacks the talent to be the fighter to carry the sport.

‘Money’ Mayweather vs ‘Canelo’ Alvarez: Boxing’s Real Champs, Now & Then

canelo76By Kirby (Kwest) Edwards: It’s a good thing for a boxer to believe they are the best, because after all, that’s how we became so blessed to have a man around called, ‘The Greatest.’ But the unfortunate thing about today’s critics in the sport of boxing is this; As if we didn’t always have a sore eye on the sport, a mandatory title defense system has been put into place to sort of help them along in their inaccuracies about who is the best.

Whether you are a fan or professional analyst, many criticisms are not based on real facts or stats, and thus who is the best, but more on who is the favorite. The favorites have outnumbered the best, in the same way that the lie spreads faster than the truth.

Nacho Beristain picks Mayweather Jr. over his Countryman Saul Alvarez

floyd15173By Vitali Shaposhnikov: Hope is something that no man should give up on, or abandon at any point in time. No matter what the odds are, no matter what obstacles are in the way, optimism and belief in miracles can carry people far.

Unfortunately aside from hope, there isn’t much else riding with the fans of Saul Alvarez for his upcoming bout against Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Looking at the official betting odds as well stylistic strengths and weaknesses, Mayweather Jr. is as always, a huge favorite. Despite Canelo being a young hungry champion with an unblemished record, many boxing fans and analysts agree that this fight will not be as challenging as hype projects it to be for Floyd.

While it’s important to be patriotic and root for one’s countryman, truth has the tendency to revel itself sooner or later.

Ward: I can’t see Canelo out-boxing Mayweather

canelo0002By Dan Ambrose: Andre Ward isn’t giving Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-0-1, 30 KO’s) much of any chance at beating Floyd Mayweather Jr. (44-0, 26 KO’s) this Saturday night. In fact, Ward is only giving Canelo a puncher’s chance of winning this fight against the faster and much more experienced Floyd.

Ward believes that Canelo maybe can score a knockout if he lands a really big puncher, but barring that happening, he doesn’t have a real chance at winning. Ward also thinks the huge amount of water weight Canelo will be taking off to get down to the 152 pound catch-weight is going to possibly hurt his stamina down the stretch.

Prediction: Canelo will beat Mayweather in an upset of the year

canelo785By M.Khan: This weekend’s fight between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez reminds me of Larry Homes when he chose the wrong time to face a young Michael Spinks. Larry thought it would be an easy win with a bigger guy man handling a much smaller heavyweight in Michael Spinks, but it didn’t turn out that way.

Holmes just needed one more win to tie Rocky Marciano’s record of 49 consecutive victories, but unfortunately Holmes underestimated Spinks and ended up losing a 15 round decision in 1985.

This year 2013 has proven to be the year of upsets, and I strongly believe that BOTH fights between Mayweather and Canelo and Lucas Matthysse and Danny Garcia this weekend will be part of this ongoing trend.

Mayweather vs. Canelo – My Take

canelo3267333By Michael Turturice: I have spent some good quality time watching the hype leading up to this fight; I’ve also spent the last dozen years watching Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Saul “Canelo” Alvarez fight. In fact if I hear “HARD WORK AND DEDICATION” come out of Mayweather’s one more time I might just split in two.

I’m not going to say that Money is not at the top of the boxing food chain or that he has spent the last 5 years ducking PAC or that his latest target will be his downfall. But I have noticed a few little things worth writing about.

First Canelo, yes he is big, I mean real big…and strong. But what pops out to me is the way he throws his combinations, sharp, fast and unpredictable moving from up top back to the body with an odd yet poetic flow. His power has been well documented and what I see is that he has a long throw, meaning he fires past is target almost like a wrecking ball. He is not content to just make contact; he wants to punch a hole in you.
