By Eric Thomas: Floyd Mayweather Jr. (44-0, 26 KO’s) gave his opponent for Saturday night WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-0-1, 30 KO’s) a back-handed compliment by saying that Canelo will wind up in the Hall of Fame one day, but only as statistic in being one of Mayweather’s victims.

Mayweather Jr. said “Someday Canelo will go down in the Hall of Fame, as one of the opponents I beat.”

Unless Canelo raises his game this Saturday night, he could very well end up as just another statistic on Mayweather’s eventual Hall of Fame stats.

Is comparing Canelo to Miguel Cotto plausible? Does it make sense claiming that beating Cotto is a guarantee at beating Alvarez? Are they similar in the way they fight?

(Photo credit: Naoki Fakuda) By Dan Ambrose: Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer says that the World Boxing Council has had a special pure gold WBC belt created for this Saturday’s fight between WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-0-1, 30 KO’s) and Floyd Mayweather Jr. (44-0, 26 KO’s) at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

I’m assuming when Schaefer says it’s “pure gold,” he’s talking about it being 24 K gold and not 14 K. A pure 24 karat belt would be useless to be worn as a belt even for adornment.

Schaefer said “The WBC has produced a very special belt for this occasion. It’s a first time that they have melted a big gold bar into the belt. This is a belt made of pure gold.”

Canelo told ESPN that he was already at 153 lbs. 2 days ago, but he looked close to 163 than 153, and it was impossible to take that seriously given how bad Canelo still was at the time.

Mayweather Jr. is very aware of Canelo’s weight from his inside sources, and he said this about his red-haired opponents struggles to make weight “He’s still got a lot of weight to get off. My weight is made. I woke up this morning 150. I know it [about Canelo still needing to drop a ton of weight]. My job as a fighter is to know everything about my opponent I’m facing.”

To Mayweather, Canelo is just another victim for Mayweather to add to his long list heavily hyped opponents that turned out to be little more than just a mirage.

Mayweather Jr. said at the final pressure conference today “September 14th is just another stepping stone, just another opponent for me. But he [Canelo] knows he’s facing Floyd Mayweather. I’m just facing another opponent. It doesn’t matter what’s the game plan. If the game plan is to keep pressuring, I know how to handle that. If the game plan is to box, can’t no body outbox me.”

It’s debatable what Canelo will try and do. In his win over Trout, Canelo got tired and chose to out-box Trout. 5 of the last 6 rounds could have gone either way due to Trout out-working Canelo.

All the great fighters in history never get to retire undefeated at some point or another they face someone who on fight night is better than them. Why are we to believe that Floyd is invincible father time waits for no man, and Floyd is reaching his time at almost 40 years of age.

This $12 million is quite a bit of money for a fighter only 23-years-old having fought only 1 good opponent during his career in Austin Trout. In contrast, Mayweather Jr. is making $41.5 million for the fight, but the difference in experience between them is huge.
