Frankie Gomez vs. Mauricio Herrera possible for Canelo-Khan card

herrera2By Dan Ambrose: Golden Boy Promotions are reportedly in the process of putting together the finishing touches of negotiations between welterweight Frankie Gomez (20-0, 13 KOs) and 35-year-old Mauricio Herrera (22-5, 7 KOs) for the undercard of the HBO pay-per-view fight between WBC middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez vs. Amir Khan.

Both Herrera and Gomez are moving up in weight to 147. Gomez, 24, already moved up in weight a couple of fights ago after struggling to make the 140lb division weight limit. However, Gomez came in at 150 for his fight against Jorge Silva last October, and you have to wonder how long he’ll be able to make weight for the 147lb division.

I’m sure Golden Boy wants to try to keep Gomez at 147 somehow, because that division gives him his best and possibly his only chance of being a major player.

Matthysse-Herrera being finalized for Canelo-Khan card

matthysse567676By Jim Dower: Golden Boy Promotions are working tirelessly to finalize the negotiations for the welterweight clash between Lucas Matthysse and Mauricio Herrera for the undercard of the Saul “Canelo” Alvarez vs. Amir Khan card on HBO pay-per-view from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. Golden Boy expects the Matthysse-Herrera fight negotiations to be wrapped up by next week possibly. It’s a great fight matching two of the best fighters that recently moved up from the light welterweight division to take this fight.

Matthysse vs. Herrera will definitely help create some interest in the Canelo-Khan undercard, and it should be a great fight. Both guys have dealt with some disappointing defeats in recent years. Herrera was beaten by Danny Garcia and Jose Benavidez in fights that many fans felt he should have won. Matthysse has suffered recent losses to Danny Garcia and Viktor Postol, two of the better fighters in the sport.

“It’s still in the works,” Golden Boy Promotions vice president Eric Gomez said to ringtv.com. “It’s about a week away from getting done. There are still loose ends — details that are important that could break the fight. They’re both interested but once you go down and start talking about money and weight and this and that, you can lose the fight.”

Terence Crawford vs. Mauricio Herrera possible for 2/27 at MSG

crawford6By Chris Williams: WBO light welterweight champion Terence Crawford (27-0, 19 KOs) won’t be getting the big money fight that he was hoping for in early 2016 against Manny Pacquiao, but he does have a good chance of fighting 35-year-old #3 WBO Mauricio Herrera (22-5, 7 KOs) on February 27th at Madison Square Garden in New York.

Unbeaten #6 WBO, #8 IBF lightweight contender Felix Verdejo (19-0, 14 KOs) will be on the same card in a 10 round bout against an opponent still to be determined.

Provodnikov-Herrera2: The Rematch Nobody is Talking About:

provodnikov034By Nate Estrada: Often when we watch boxing, our expectations are more than seeing a good fight. Some of us want to see a slugfest, a KO or a great comeback. Sometimes we get them, sometimes we don’t. Then there are times when we see something great and don’t even know it. Like that time Mauricio Herrera (21-5-0, 7 KOs) fought Ruslan Provodnikov (25-4-0, 18 KOs).

It’ll almost be 5 years since Herrera and Provodnikov got into that war on ESPN’s “Friday Night Fights” in January of 2011. The fight turned out to be a slugfest while both boxers displayed boxing skills and will from start to finish. Also at the time, they weren’t as popular as they are today. If you saw their fight that night, hopefully they won your attention with their brutal match and made fight fans want to see more. A rematch.

We got an unexpected slugfest the first time around, think about what we’ll get the next time? Both fighters had over 800 punches thrown in the fight, leaving a statement on each other’s faces.

Herrera wins technical decision over Lundy

YouTube video

Michael Montero – In what will likely be the last boxing event ever held at LA Sports Arena, Mauricio Herrera took on Hank Lundy Saturday night in a junior welterweight match scheduled for twelve rounds. In the co-feature to the HBO Latino broadcast, Michael Perez took on Luis Sanchez in a ten round lightweight context. It was all part of a Golden Boy Promotions card that kicked off with a special “fan fiesta” earlier in the afternoon where fans could hang out with their favorite fighters to get photos and autographs. Indeed it was a great Saturday to be a boxing fan in Los Angeles.

I dialed Hank Lundy’s number after I sent him a few pages of questions and he said, “Rather do it over the phone?”

I hear him answer and I thought he sounded tired. “Hello, Hank, its Bob, tired?”
“No,” he said, “Just got done working out.”

2014 biggest boxing robberies

herrera688By Gav Duthie: After witnessing another couple of horrendous decisions on Saturday night many high profile boxing figures including Teddy Atlas and Bob Arum have spoken out in protest. Controversial decisions are as old as the sport itself but it is increasingly affecting the fighters who are trying to make a living out of it.

Mauricio Herrera might have been a contender for fighter of the year for 2014 after his performances against Danny Garcia and Jose Benavidez. Is only win ironically came in probably his closest fight against Johan Perez.
