Johan Perez and Mauricio Herrera(Photo credit: Esther Lin/Showtime) By Allan Fox: #5 WBA Mauricio Herrera (20-4, 7 KOs) will be facing #1 WBA Johan Perez (19-1-1, 13 KOs) in a fight for the interim WBA World light welterweight title on the undercard of the Saul “Canelo” Alvarez for Erislandy Lara pay-per-view card on Showtime at the MGM Grand, Grand Garden Arena, in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA.

This is a fight where Herrera, 34, can partially make up for the controversial 12 round majority decision he lost to WBA/WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia last March in Bayamon, Puerto Rico.

Mauricio Herrera: I’m still not over my loss to Danny Garcia

herrera667By Dan Ambrose: #5 WBA, #7 WBC, #7 WBO Mauricio Herrera (20-4, 7 KO’s) is still bothered by his controversial 12 round majority decision loss to WBA/WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia from last March in Puerto Rico.

Herrera feels that he should have easily won that fight to capture Garcia’s two world titles, but instead he found himself on the losing end with what many boxing fans feel was a hometown decision.

Garcia-Herrera fight draws big ratings on Showtime

YouTube video
By Allan Fox: Last Saturday’s fight between WBA/WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia and Mauricio Herrera reportedly brought in 1.1 million viewers on Showtime, which makes it one of the highest viewed boxing events of the year. The card also had unbeaten heavyweight Deontay Wilder battling Malik Scott in the co-feature bout, and that fight definitely helped the ratings for the card.

Danny Garcia vs. Mauricio Herrera: Was open scoring a factor?

garcia14By Gerardo Granados: Last Saturday night at Bayamon, Puerto Rico; we got the chance to see a good fight. In theory it wasn’t supposed to be too difficult for the WBA-WBC light welterweight belt holder Danny Garcia (W28-L0-D0), but the challenger Mauricio Herrera (W20-L4-D0) proved to be a good boxer and put up a great performance. The fight was very competitive and there were hard rounds to score, at the end I scored it even 114-114 with two close rounds that could have gone to either fighter.

But was it a major factor to have had the “open scoring”? This system has been criticized by boxing fans, even boxing analyst and authorities can´t find consensus on its effective use. When Saul Alvarez defeated Austin Trout some believed that it hurt Trout to know he was behind on the score cards, last Saturday night when the score cards were announced in the fourth and eight rounds I believe it didn’t influenced negatively the performance of both fighters.

Danny Garcia: Moving up to 147 will rejuvenate my career

garcia677By Dan Ambrose: WBA/WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia (28-0, 16 KO’s) came out the winner last Saturday night in beating Maurico Herrera (20-4, 7 KO’s) by a questionable 12 round majority decision in Bayamon, Peurto Rico, but Garcia was speaking like he had lost the fight at the post-fight press conference. He stated over and over again that he did his job and won the fight, but there was no conviction in his voice and in the voice of his father Angel Garcia.

They both sounded like it was a loss. Angel got upset when someone mentioned to him that the Showtime analysts had Herrera winning the fight. Angel then angrily said that they’re not judges and they might not have liked Danny anyway, implying that it may have been personal for them to have seen Herrera as the better fighter.

Herrera wants rematch with Danny Garcia

garcia68By Dan Ambrose: After what many people saw as a pure robbery last night in WBA/WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia’s controversial 12 round majority decision victory over Mauricio Herrera (20-4, 7 KO’s) at the Coliseo Ruben Rodriguez, Bayamon, Puerto Rico, Herrera is saying that he wants a rematch at 140 lbs if Garcia doesn’t move up in weight to 147. Garcia was hinting after the fight that he may move up in weight due to the problems he had in making weight for the fight. He blamed his poor performance on his problems making weight in part.

“I don’t think Danny Garcia thought I’d come out fighting like that,” Herrera said after the fight. “I want the rematch if he’ll stay at 140. I’m hard to hit. They think I’m easy until they get in the ring with me.”

Schaefer: Danny Garcia vs. Mauricio Herrera is a terrific match-up

garcia77By Dan Ambrose: This Saturday night WBA/WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia (27-0, 16 KO’s) will be defending his titles against #4 WBA, #10 WBC contender Mauricio Herrera (20-3, 7 KO’s) on Showtime from the Coliseo Ruben Rodriguez, Bayamon, Puerto Rico. While this is technically a title defense for Garcia, it’s viewed more as a tune-up/stay busy fight by hardcore fans, who have shown very little interest in this fight for obvious reasons.

I’m surprised Showtime is televising the Garcia-Herrera fight as the main event this Saturday because there is absolutely no interest in this fight among boxing fans in the internet forums. Showtime vice president Stephen Espinoza should have gotten the drift by now that this isn’t a fight that fans are excited about and instead replaced this fight with the Juan Manuel Lopez vs. the Daniel Ponce de Leon in the main event, and then Deontay Wilder vs. Malik Scott as the co-feature bout.

Garcia-Herrera: Danny needs to step it up after this mismatch

garcia564By Dan Ambrose: WBA/WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia (27-0, 16 KO’s) will be taking a step back from facing dangerous opposition next month when he faces Mauricio Herrera (20-3, 7 KO’s) on March 15th at the Coliseo Ruben Rodriguez, in Bayamon, Puerto Rico. Garcia recently defeated former WBC interim light welterweight champion Lucas Matthysse by a clinch-filled 12 round decision last September.

Garcia needs to keep facing quality opposition if he wants to make a case that he deserves a fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr. The worst thing that Garcia can do is to step back from good opponents and go back to the lower level opposition that he was fighting earlier in his career.

Danny Garcia: Puerto Rican boxing needs this fight [Herrera] right now

Danny Garcia and Mauricio Hernandez(Photo credit: Ester Lin/Showtime) By Dan Ambrose: WBA/WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia (27-0, 16 KO’s) is facing what almost a tune-up caliber opponent on March 15th against Mauricio Herrera (20-3, 7 KO’s) at the Coliseo Ruben Rodriguez, Bayamon, Puerto Rico. Herrera has lost 2 out of his last 4 fights, and he seems to have been picked out for what he did in the past when he beat Ruslan Provodnikov many moons ago in 2011. A lot of things have changed since then for Herrera. He’s been beaten by Karim Mayfield and Mike Alvarado.

Garcia has chosen to fight in Puerto Rico where his parents came from. That’s fine, but why didn’t Garcia pick someone a lot better than Herrera? I’m still trying to understand his choice of opponent. If he really wanted to create the best impression with his parent’s people, then why didn’t he select someone that actually has a chance to beat him like Lucas Matthysse instead of someone that has lost 2 out of his last 4 fights?
