Klitschko vs. Fury

By Scott Bells: Undefeated Tyson Fury (25-0, 18 KOs) is now number one at heavyweight owning 3 of the 4 major belts after defeating IBF/IBO/WBA/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko (64-4, 53 KOs) by a 12 round unanimous decision tonight at the ESPRIT Arena in Dusseldorf, Germany. While nobody could dispute the result or the scorecards, it was a poor fight to watch. The scores were 115-112, 115-112 and 116-111.

Immediately, people have stated how ‘shot’ Klitschko looked throughout the fight, which is true to some extent. However, that should not take away from the fact that Tyson Fury deserves alot of credit for devising and executing a game plan based around his strengths, namely in reach, height and speed.

But our worries were seemingly just a by-product of the mind-games between the Klitschko and Fury camps – after a ring-walk accompanied by a fantastic lighting show and a fully-furnished orchestra to play the Ukrainian national anthem, Michael Buffer made the announcements, and referee Tony Weeks gave his instructions, and the first bell sounded.

We were treated to the most entertaining heavyweight title fight in a very long time. Entertaining not due to its action, but due to IBF/IBO/WBA/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitscko’s inability to deal with Tyson Fury in their fight at the ESPRIT Arena in Dusseldorf, Germany. He couldn’t beat him to the jab, he couldn’t get past his feints, he couldn’t bully him in the clinch, and he couldn’t land his power punches. Fury did a masterful job of taking Wlad’s best assets – his jab and his clinch-warfare – away from him. Fury’s feet were fantastic, and his head and hip movement resembled that of a much smaller man.

By Scott Gilfoid: This is expected to be the hardest fight of Tyson Fury’s career tonight against IBF/IBO/WBA/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko (64-3, 53 KOs) on Sky Box Office. Indeed, you can make an argument that this could very well be Fury’s Waterloo with him being trapped, forced into a hole, and then battered into submission until he waves the white towel of surrender at some point in front of 55,000 fans at the ESPRIT Arena in Dusseldorf, Germany.

For some reason, Fury thinks this is going to be a very easy fight for him tonight. He’s saying it’s going to be his easiest fight. I don’t know if he’s just whistling past the graveyard or if he actually believes what he’s saying. With the 27-year-old Fury, it’s almost impossible to know what he’s really thinking.

By Scott Gilfoid: Well, it looks like Tyson Fury (24-0, 18 KOs) plans on doing a lot of sulking if things don’t work out for him tonight in his big fight against IBF/IBO/WBA/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko (64-3, 53 KOs).

Fury is back on the old retirement theme he’d been blabbering about several weeks ago. He’s saying if he loses to Klitschko tonight, then might wind up retiring from boxing and just putting his feet up and doing nothing. Whether Fury will have enough money from the Klitschko fight tonight for him to just hang out on the couch with his feet up for the remainder of his life is the big question.

By By Simon Allen: More or less nobody in the boxing world is given to believe the big Englishman can win in Dusseldorf on Saturday night. Tyson Fury however is a different beast to most and his confidence and unpredictability mean no one can categorically rule him out.

He faces a formidable champion in Wladmir Klitschko, owner of a record that boasts 27 world title fights, 23 successful title defences and unbeaten in 11 years. It seems to me that calibre of opponent is as good a place to start as any.
