Schaefer tries to explain away Khan’s losses at press conference

By William Mackay: It was both interesting and quite sad to see Amir Khan’s promoter Richard Schaefer, the CEO of Golden Boy Promotions, trying to explain away Khan’s recent losses to Lamont Peterson and Danny Garcia at today’s London press conference. Schaefer tried to say that Khan doesn’t have a problem with taking hard shots, and instead blamed it on the placement of the left hook that Garcia hit Khan with in the third round of their fight last July. Khan ended up getting knocked out in the 4th round after getting knocked down three separate times.

As for Khan’s loss to Peterson, Schaefer brought up the mystery man with the hat that sat at the scorers table during a portion of the fight, as if this changed what happened in the fight.

Khan: Hunter wants me to become a boxer again

Image: Khan: Hunter wants me to become a boxer againBy William Mackay: Amir Khan (26-3, 18 KO’s) says his trainer Virgil Hunter wants to turn him back into a boxer rather than someone that gets excited and starts slugging it out with his opponents like Khan has foolishly done in the past. Khan sees himself as having transformed into a brawler after becoming overconfident from finding success.

Khan faces unbeaten Carlos Molina (17-0, 7 KO’s) on December 15th in Khan’s first fight under the guidance of new trainer Hunter at the Sports Arena, in Los Angeles, California.

Khan said to Sky Sports News “When you start winning fights so comfortably you can forget about the meaning of being a boxer. What Virgil wants me to do is go back to boxing again but be smart…sticking to a game plan because sometimes when I see red forget.”

Should Khan move up to 147?

Image: Should Khan move up to 147?By Alex Prodromou: Why is Amir Khan still draining himself in attempting to make light welterweight? Hasn’t he learnt his chin is suffering? He got KO’d by Breidis Prescott because of weight issues. Khan lost to Lamont Peterson because he had no stamina as he was weight drained. He then had this big comeback fight again WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia which Khan lost due to again, weight issues.

Now he is again attempting to make Light Welterweight for his next fight? What is he doing? Ideally this Vyacheslav Senchenko is who Amir Khan should have faced in order to chase a possible rematch with WBA Welterweight king Paulie Malignaggi or a future fight with Ricky Hatton.

Khan: I want to clean up the 140 lb division and move up to 147 next year

Image: Khan: I want to clean up the 140 lb division and move up to 147 next yearBy Scott Gilfoid: Sadly, former IBF/WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan is still talking about wanting to clean up the light welterweight division and then moving up to 147 to campaign as a welterweight despite being whipped in his last two fights.

Khan still thinks he’s going to beat the top guys at light welterweight and then go on to bigger and better things. You’d think he would have downsized his ambitions at this point and picked up some more realistic/achievable goals.

Amir Khan and his future

Image: Amir Khan and his futureBy Mohammad Malik: Virgil hunter seems like a no nonsense type of a trainer. I watched some of his recent interviews, and it seems that he knows exactly what he wants to do with Khan. And if he can do half the job he has done with ward, then Khan should improve a great deal. On the other hand, Khan seems to have put his ego aside too.

Khan admits now that his defense needs work and he is willing to learn. It’s better for him to realize that now before it’s too late. He really is at the cross roads and another loss to a big underdog like Carlos Molina could really drive his fans away.

Khan can be rehabilitated

Image: Khan can be rehabilitatedBy John F. McKenna (McJack): Former WBA and IBF light welterweight champion Amir Khan (26-3, 18 KO’s) has received a great deal of criticism over the last several months, particularly after his 4th round TKO loss to undefeated light welterweight champion Danny Garcia (24-0, 14 KO’s) in July.

It was just a year ago that highly respected five time trainer of the year Freddie Roach was singing the praises of Khan. Roach went so far as to predict that within 18 months “King Khan” would be the number #1 Pound for Pound fighter in the world. At the time many boxing pundits agreed with Roach. Amir to some extent had overcome the stigma of being KO’d in the first round by Briedis Prescott in September 2006. Following the loss to Prescott, Khan took on Roach as his new trainer.

Amir Khan to fight Carlos Molina on December 15th at the Los Angeles Sports Arena

Image: Amir Khan to fight Carlos Molina on December 15th at the Los Angeles Sports ArenaBy William Mackay: The Amir Khan (26-3, 18 KO’s) vs. Carlos Molina (17-0, 7 KO’s) fight is now officially set for December 15th on Showtime and will be taking place at the Los Angeles Sports Arena, in California, according to RingTV. The fight will also be televised on Sky Sports 1HD in the UK.

Besides the Khan-Molina fight there’s a possibility that unbeaten former U.S. 2008 Olympic heavyweight prospect Deontay Wilder (25-0, 25 KO’s) could be on the undercard. Golden Boy Promotions are looking for an opponent to put with the 6’7″ Wilder and they’re reportedly looking for a quality name to put him in with. Let’s hope so because the Molina-Khan card REALLY needs some help with Khan vs. Molina being the main event.

Khan takes shot at Roach: We didn’t focus on defense as much

Image: Khan takes shot at Roach: We didn't focus on defense as muchBy William Mackay: Amir Khan says he and his former trainer Freddie Roach are still good friends even after Khan recently let Roach go because he wasn’t happy with how training was going. However, that’s not stopping Khan from pointing out what he feels were Roach’s limitations as a trainer.

Khan said to Sky Sports News “The focus wasn’t there [on defensive] as much and we kept on doing the same things in the gym, and that is probably why a lot of fighters that I fought knew exactly what I was going to do.”

Virgil Hunter: Khan doesn’t have a chin problem

Image: Virgil Hunter: Khan doesn't have a chin problemBy William Mackay: Trainer Virgil Hunter doesn’t see any problem with Amir Khan’s chin. Instead, he sees Khan’s knockout losses as being the result of poor decisions he’s made in fights. That’s good to know because I was under the impression that Khan’s chin was fragile after he got staggered from a jab from Breidis Prescott and subsequently knocked out in one round, and then stopped by Danny Garcia after taking a hard left to the neck in the third round last July. Khan was then knocked out a round later by Garcia.

Speaking with the Daily Mirror, Hunter said “I think think he [Khan] has a chin problem. It was some of the decisions he made after he took the first punch that cost him the fight against Garcia. Amir has what it takes to get back to the top of the mountain.”

Hunter believes he can take Khan back to the top of 140 lb division

Image: Hunter believes he can take Khan back to the top of 140 lb divisionBy William Mackay: After working out with former IBF/WBC light welterweight champion Amir Khan (26-3, 18 KO’s) for the first time recently, trainer Virgil Hunter believes he can take Khan back to the top of the light welterweight division so that Khan can recapture a world title or two. Hunter was recently hired by Khan to replace previous trainer Freddie Roach, who was let go after Khan lost back to back fights to Lamont Peterson and Danny Garcia.

Khan, for whatever reason, asked Roach to spent more time working with him so that he could develop his defensive side of his gamer to a higher level. However, Roach couldn’t give Khan the time he needed and was subsequently let go.
