Amir Khan now ranked #2 WBC at 147 without having fought in that weight class

khan52By Scott Gilfoid: It seems like former IBF/WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan (27-3, 19 KO’s) is being put on easy street lately. First it was his promoters at Golden Boy having him face 2nd tier fighter Julio Diaz in the light welterweight tournament, while the other tournament fighters Zab Judah, Danny Garcia, Lucas Matthysse and Lamont Peterson have to pick each other off to get to the finals to face what will likely be Khan.

And now the World Boxing Council has suddenly ranked Khan at #2 at 147 despite the fact that Khan has never fought in the welterweight division before. It seems that the WBC is doing it’s best to try and make it so that a fight between Khan and WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. will happen in 2013 or 2014.

Julio Diaz: I’m not Carlos Molina; Khan’s team made a mistake in choosing me

diaz55By Scott Gilfoid: Former IBF lightweight champion Julio Diaz is considered to be a huge underdog in his fight against former IBF/WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan (27-3, 19 KO’s) this month on April 27th at the Motorpoint Arena in Sheffield, UK. Diaz, 33, has been picked out specifically to be a sacrificial lamb for Khan to slaughter in this fight.

Diaz said to Sky Sports News: “They think it’s a safe fight, for him to come back and rebuild his career and his confidence. He took on Carlos Molina in his last fight…If they chose me for Amir to look great in his hometown. I think it’s the worst mistake they made.”

Will Amir Khan Ever Rise To The Top?

khan45By Rumel: Bolton’s superstar, Amir Khan, returns to the ring at the end of the month to face seasoned-veteran, Julio Diaz, as he looks to rebuild his career.

But the question remains – will he ever reach the top he so badly desires? Losses against Peterson and Garcia hurt his career just as he was about to enter the golden spotlight, with talks about a possible fight with Floyd Mayweather.

How things suddenly change in the space of a few months. If we take a look at his fight with Peterson, there’s no doubt in my mind that Khan won this fight. I felt the refereeing was unfair, and perhaps slightly biased. But in my opinion, Khan did enough to win a points decision. However, the fact remains, Khan did struggle against an opponent who many feel, along with myself, is not a world-class operator.

Khan thinks some of his critics are jealous of him

khan88By Scott Gilfoid: Former IBF/WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan (27-3, 19 KO’s) thinks some of his critics are jealous of his talents, because he doesn’t understand how they can criticize him when he’s beaten guys like Zab Judah, Marcos Maidana and Paulie Malignaggi.

Khan said to thesun.co.uk “I don’t know why some fans and a few other fighters have a go at me. Jealously maybe? But I’ve learned to live with it and all that kind of sneaky criticism no longer bothers me.”

I bet. I think the criticism has to bother Khan, as it would anyone because it’s not just coming from a few fans. We’re talking massive amounts of fans are criticizing Khan, and that suggests that they see holes in his game.

Khan-Diaz: Amir looking to get back to world level

khan54By Scott Gilfoid: Amir Khan’s stock has dramatically fallen in the past two years since he took defeats at the hands of Lamont Peterson and Danny Garcia. Those defeats have shown to some that Khan doesn’t have the chin or the skills to fight at the world level.

Khan now has a new trainer in Virgil Hunter, and he’s fighting his second straight 2nd tier fighter in Julio Diaz (40-7-1, 29 KO’s). He beat little known lightweight Carlos Molina last December, and was able to end his own two-fight losing streak in beating the second tier fighter.

Schaefer hoping Khan will stay at 140 long enough to fight tourney winner

schaefer2By Scott Gilfoid: Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer is putting his fighter former IBF/WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan (27-3, 19 KO’s) in a position to where he’ll be able to capture three of the four 140 pound belts by beating the winner of the four-man light welterweight tournament in December.

Schaefer said to RingTV: “Amir wants to clean up the 140-pound weight class and, I think, what better way to do that than a big December fight against the winner of these other great matchups.”

Deontay Wilder vs. Audley Harrison possible for Khan-Diaz undercard on April 27th

wilder23By Scott Gilfoid: There’s talk of the talented American heavyweight contender/prospect Deontay Wilder (27-0, 27 KO’s) facing British heavyweight Audley Harrison (31-6, 23 KO’s) on the undercard of the Amir Khan vs. Julio Diaz fight on April 27th at the Motorpoint Arena, Sheffield, Yorkshire, United Kingdom.

Golden Boy promotions were hoping to get American Tony Thompson, the fighter that destroyed the UK’s best heavyweight David Price last February, but Thompson is reportedly not excited about getting in the ring with the knockout artist Wilder with his one-punch power.

Harrison, 6’6”, is almost as tall as Wilder, and recently has had a bit of luck in capturing the Prizefighter tournament last month in defeating Claus Bertino, Derric Rossy and Martin Rogan in three fights.

Amir Khan calls for an eliminator

khan45By Mark Havey: Amir Khan has often made the mistake of talking about other fights whilst training for another. Effectively dispersing his focus to places it shouldn’t be. history has proven that is never wise to over look an opponent. During his training camp for his fight with Lamont Peterson, Amir Khan repeatedly called out Floyd Mayweather.

He lost a close fight on points. Throughout training for Danny Garcia, Khan again issued challenges to Mayweather. Garcia knocked Khan out in round 4.

Khan recently used his Facebook page to propose an eliminator. Not a bad idea if he was suggesting a way in which he could earn a fight with Garcia, but he didn’t do that.

Danny Garcia: Khan should beat Julio Diaz

diaz33By Scott Gilfoid: WBA/WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia believes Amir Khan (27-3, 19 KO’s) has the speed and the youth to get by former IBF lightweight champion Julio Diaz (40-7-1, 29 KO’s) next month on April 27th at the Motorpoint Arena, Sheffield, Yorkshire, United Kingdom.

However, Garcia doesn’t know whether or not Khan has actually improved or not under his new trainer Virgil Hunter because he’s still not being put in with quality world class opposition. Diaz, 33, may have been a world champion 8 years ago, but he’s not the same fighter now, and he’s an unranked welterweight fighting above his best weight by two divisions.

Khan-Diaz: Amir can’t afford another loss

khan6712By Scott Gilfoid: Former IBF/WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan (27-3, 19 KO’s) has been put in the position where if he loses his next fight against Julio Diaz (40-7-1, 29 KO’s) on April 27th then it’ll be pretty much over for the 26-year-old Khan.

Diaz isn’t ranked in the top 15 in the welterweight division, and he’s not even close to being as good as many of the top 15 contenders in that division and also in the light welterweight division. If Khan can’t beat this guy when he faces him at the Motorpoint Arena, Sheffield, Yorkshire, United Kingdom, then it’s really over for Khan.
