Khan: I won’t be fighting Mayweather until I beat Algieri

khan85By Scott Gilfoid: While some fighters earn their shots at huge money fights by beating top caliber opposition, others do it on the cheap by beating 2nd tier fighters and guys that fight in a division below them. Amir Khan (30-3, 19 KOs) believes that if he beats the light hitting 140 pound contender Chris Algieri (20-1, 8 KOs) on May 29th, it will open the door for him to get a big money fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr. in September.

Khan points out that Algieri was recently beaten by Manny Pacquiao last November, and he feels that if Algieri was good enough to face Pacquiao, then he’s good enough to be his opponent.

Khan: If I beat Algieri in style I’ll be in a great position for a mega-fight

khan777By Scott Gilfoid: Amir Khan (30-3, 19 KOs) believes that his fight next month on May 29th against former WBO 140 pound champion Chris Algieri (20-1, 8 KOs) could be opening the door for him to get a mega-fight against one of the sport’s biggest stars.

Khan, of course, wants a fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr. or Manny Pacquiao, and he believes that beating the 31-year-old Algieri could be the door opener for him to achieve that goal.

“If I win this fight [against Algieri] in style it will put me in a great position for a mega-fight,” Khan said via the Dailymail.co.uk. “I’m probably closer than ever [to a really big fight] so I’m not going to let anything go wrong this time. I’m going to win this fight comfortably.”

Algieri is being minimized by Khan’s critics, says Virgil Hunter

algieri787By Scott Gilfoid: Amir Khan’s trainer Virgil Hunter sees Khan’s opponent for May 29th, former WBO light welterweight champion Chris Algieri (20-1, 8 KOs), as someone who is being greatly underestimated by Khan’s critics, and he doesn’t see it as fair. Khan (30-3, 19 KOs) and Algieri will be fighting each other on Premier Boxing Champions at the Barclays Center, in Brooklyn, New York, USA. The undercard will have former two division world champion Paulie Malignaggi facing Danny O’Connor in a 10 round bout.

Algieri promising to shine against Khan on 5/29

algieri5By Scott Gilfoid: Next month former WBO 140 pound champion Chris Algieri (20-1, 8 KOs) will be looking to knock Amir Khan (30-3, 19 KOs) down a peg in their fight on 5/29 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

Algieri, 31, has very little pressure on him compared to Khan because he’s already had his big payday fight against Manny Pacquiao last November and was totally spanked.

Khan faces Algieri on 5/29 at Barclays Center, Brooklyn, New York

khan34By Scott Gilfoid: In what will surely be seen in a negative light by many boxing fans, former IBF/WBC light welterweight champion Amir Khan (30-3, 19 KOs) will be back in the ring at the end of next month on May 29th against former WBO 140 pound world titlist Chris Algieri (20-1, 8 KOs) on Spike TV on Premier Boxing Champions at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

Khan, 28, wants a big money fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr. or Manny Pacquiao. Khan seems to believe that as long as he continues to win, he’ll eventually get a shot against one of those two big names.

Khan: I have pressure to do a better job beating Algieri than Pacquiao did

khan343444By Scott Gilfoid: Britain’s Amir Khan (30-3, 19 KOs) feels that he’s got a lot of heavy pressure on him for his May 30th fight against former WBO light welterweight champion Chris Algieri (20-1, 8 KOs). While it’s pretty much a given that Khan will win this fight due to his superior power, hand speed and experience at the pro level, he feels that his performance against the 31-year-old Algieri will be compared to that of Manny Paquiao’s performance.

Pacquiao defeated Aligeri by a 12 round unanimous decision last November in Macau, China. In that fight, Pacquiao knocked Algieri down six times and won every round. As such, for Khan to get anything from the Algieri fight, besides a boatload of money, he’s going to need to whip him like no tomorrow to show that he’s at the same level as Pacquiao.

Do you care for Khan? Part 2

khan45673By Bill Gabay: On March 14th this writer asked boxing fans the question and majority of responses were an adamant NO. Some gave the flat-out negative response while others cited reasons. Welterweight contender Amir Khan gave us another reason last week and reinforced public opinion of him.

Instead of giving boxing fans what they want – a fight with the waiting IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook or another competitive fighter (such as Timothy Bradley, Keith Thurman, Adrien Broner or a rematch with Marcos Maidana), Khan announced he would be fighting former WBO light welterweight champion Chris Algieri.

Khan: Algieri fight isn’t confirmed yet; Brook still needs to prove himself

khan200By Scott Gilfoid: Former IBF/WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan (30-3, 19 KOs) says his May 30th fight against former WBO 140 pound champion Chris Algieri (20-1, 8 KOs) still has yet to be confirmed, according to Fighthype.com.

Khan, 28, doesn’t understand the huge amount of criticism he’s received from boxing fans ever since he made the news announcement that he’d be facing the 31-year-old Algieri next rather than someone arguably better with better power than Algieri has.

At the end of the day, Khan doesn’t make his fights. That job is done by his adviser. He offers suggestions for opponents, but it’s his management that make the ultimate decision.

Amir Khan’t get it right

khan454By Gav Duthie: Only 48 hours after making the decision to fight Chris Algieri on May 30th it wouldn’t surprise me if Amir Khan is already regretting it. I am normally an Amir critic with regards to his attitude, decision making and delusions of grandeur but in this instance I feel for the Bolton boxer. Granted there were bigger fights out there than Chris Algieri but this is still a very tricky opponent for Amir. He is going to have to be 100% up for a fight that no television network seems to want to pick up and no fan seems to support. Don’t get me wrong:

– When Khan and Brook verbally agreed to a winner takes all purse I was excited
– When Adrien Broner tweeted #KhanBroner I was excited

Khan vs. Algieri won’t be televised on Showtime, network passes on the fight

algieri1546By Scott Gilfoid: Showtime has decided to pass on televising the May 30th fight between Amir Khan (30-3, 19 KOs) and former WBO light welterweight champion Chris Algieri (20-1, 8 KOs) in New York. Dan Rafael is reporting that Showtime chose not to televise the Khan-Algieri fight.

You can only guess why. Showtime has been burned a number of times in the past in televising mismatches, and it’s possible that they might not have wanted to purchase this fight, which would appear to be a mismatch on paper with Khan likely to be heavily favored.
