By Dan Ambrose: Former three division world champion Abner Mares (25-1-1, 14 KO’s) will be returning to the ring on July 12th in a tuneup bout against Jonathan Oquendo (24-3m 16 KO’s) on the undercard of the Erislandy Lara vs. Saul “Canelo” Alvarez pay-per-view card on Showtime from the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. Mares, 28, hasn’t fought since being stopped in the 1st round by Jhonny Gonzalez last August in Carson, California.

As you saw in this fight Wilfredo had no inside game. This was because he only started taking boxing seriously 5 years prior to this at 21 years of age. This was when he started training with his dad, Vazquez Sr. who is a former three weight world champion. Before this Vazquez Jr had been studying law however he gave that up to pursue his boxing career.

Image: Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. vs. Jonathan Oquendo on SaturdayBy Chris Williams: On Saturday night former WBO super bantamweight champion Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. (21-2-1, 18 KO’s) will try and turn his career around in facing #3 WBO Jonathan Oquendo (22-2, 15 KO’s) for the vacant WBO International super bantamweight title at the Coliseo Ruben Rodriguez, in Bayamon, Puerto Rico.

Vazquez Jr., 28, has seen things turn sour rapidly in his once promising career with him losing two out of his last three fights. Vazquez Jr. was beaten by Jorce Arce by a 12th round knockout last year in May in a surprising upset that saw Vazquez Jr. lose his World Boxing Organization super bantamweight title in a fight that he was incredibly close going into the 12th. Vazquez Jr. would then beat journeyman Roberto Carlos Leyva by a 3rd round KO in his next fight in October of last year.
