By Patrick McHugh: Joe Smith Jr. and Jean Pascal could be facing each other in the fall of this year, according to RingTV. a fight between the two highly ranked contenders is in the works, says Smith Jr’s promoter Joe DeGuardia. Smith Jr. (22-1, 18 KOs), ranked #2 with the World Boxing Council at light heavyweight, is coming off of a career best 1st round knockout victory over the highly ranked former world title challenger Andrzej Fonfara last June at the UIC Pavilion in Chicago, Illinois.

For his part, the 33-year-old Pascal has seen better days in his boxing career, as he’s lost two out of his last three fights in two stoppage losses to IBF/WBA/WBO light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev. It probably wasn’t the smartest move that Pascal (30-4-1, 17 KOs) could make in choosing to fight Kovalev in a rematch last January, because he was stopped in the 7th round of a one-sided fight.

Weights: Lubin-Sandoval, Fonfara-Smith Jr. & Payano-Warren

(Photo credit: Nabeel Ahmad/Premier Boxing Champions) By Patrick McHugh: #2 WBC, #3 WBA, #4 WBO light heavyweight contender Andrzej Fonfara (28-3, 16 KOs) made weight on Friday in coming in at 174.5 pounds for his scheduled 12 round fight against prospect Joe Smith Jr. (21-1, 17 KOs) for their fight on Saturday night Premier Boxing Champions on NBC and NBCSN from the UIC Pavilion, in Chicago, Illinois.

Smith, 26, weighed in at 173lbs. This should be an interesting fight for while it lasts. Fonfara, 28, is seen as the far better fighter though, and this one figures to be a mismatch. Smith hasn’t been fighting quality opposition, and he was taken out in four rounds by a fighter named Eddie Caminero (6-3) in 2010. The Fonfara-Smith fight gives Fonfara a decent stay busy fight to keep him ready until he gets a title shot against one of the 175lb champions. It would be surprising if Smith is still aroun by the later rounds of the contest.

Fonfara vs. Smith Jr. in Chicago, Illinois on Saturday

By Patrick McHugh: #2 WBC, #3 WBA, #4 WBO light heavyweight contender Andrzej Fonfara (28-3, 16 KOs) will be taking a step down in competition this Saturday night against 26-year-old prospect Joe Smith (21-1, 17 KOs) in a scheduled 10 round bout on June 18 on Premier Boxing Champions on NBCSN at the UIC Pavilion, in Chicago, Illinois.

This is a huge step down for Fonfara from the guys he’s been fighting lately in his fights against Nathan Cleverly, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. and Adonis Stevenson. Smith is arguably at the same talent level of Doudou Ngumbu, a fighter Fonfara defeated two years ago by a 10 round decision.
