Former world champion Andre Berto (32-5, 24 KOs) won a back-and-forth fight by split decision Saturday night against fellow former champion Devon Alexander (27-4-1, 14 KOs) in the main event of Premier Boxing Champions on FOX & FOX Deportes from NYCB LIVE, home of the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum.

“I knew he was going to be quick and I knew he’d come to fight,” said Berto. “I had to get adjusted to his speed a little bit and then I started pressing him. I felt like I was in better shape and quicker to the target than he was.”

By Dan Ambrose: Trainer Freddie Roach says former WBC super middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. 49-2-1, 32 KOs) is doing well in training and showing up every day for the sessions without skipping days. Roach says the now 30-year-old Chavez Jr. could be back in the ring next month on July 16 or 23 against J’León Love (22-1, 12 KOs) in either Texas or Los Angeles, California.

Chavez Jr. has not fought since July of last year in beating the much lighter Marcos Reyes by a 10 round unanimous decision. The fight was much closer than the lopsided scores (97-92 and 98-91) handed in by two of the judges. The score that best reflected the fight was the 96-93 score in favor of Chavez Jr.

The winner of the Chilemba-Alvarez fight will be the #1 mandatory challenger to WBC light heavyweight champion Adonis Stevenson. The fight between Alvarez and Chilemba will be taking place in Quebec.

10-SHOBOX AUG 30-Love vs Medina-5010(Photo Credit: Stephanie Trapp/ SHOWTIME) By Jim Dower: In a surprise upset, Rogelio Medina (33-6m 27 KOs) halted the title aspirations of #8 WBA,#10 WBO #14 IBF J’Leon Love (18-1, 10 KOs) by stopping him in the 3rd round tonight at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas, Nevada.

This was supposed to have been a safe fight for the 26-year-old Love, but Medina nailed Love with a huge left hook in the 3rd round that sent Love down face first on the canvas. He was unable to get up in time for the fight to continue, and the fight was stopped at 0:39 of the round.
