Loeffler: Golovkin has become Boxing’s must see attraction

In addition to breaking all attendance records this Saturday night at the StubHub Center in Carson, the acclaimed outdoor Southern California boxing venue, boxing fastest rising star, GENNADY “GGG” GOLOVKIN also scored big in the TV ratings. His HBO televised second round knockout of MARCO ANTONIO RUBIO earned a 1.3 rating, making it the second highest viewed premium cable-boxing event of 2014.

This marks a 33% increase for Golovkin from his extraordinary third round stoppage of Daniel Geale on July 26th at Madison Square Garden, also telecast on HBO.

Golovkin-Rubio brings in 1.3 million viewers on HBO, a huge hit!

golovkin444(Photo credit: Sumio Yamada) By Dan Ambrose: If Miguel Cotto and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez needed the motivation to fight WBA Super World middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (31-0, 28 KOs) then all they need do is look at the huge ratings his fight against Marco Antonio Rubio (59-7-1, 51 KOs) generated last Saturday night on HBO Championship Boxing from the StubHub Center in Carson, California.

The Golovkin-Rubio fight averaged 1,304 million viewers, according to Dan Rafael of ESPN, which makes it the 2nd most viewed fight of the year. That’s not bad for a fighter who can’t get Canelo and Cotto to fight him.

Golovkin is like middleweight Mike Tyson, says Jones Jr

golovkin94By Dan Ambrose: WBA Super World middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (31-0, 28 KOs) wasted little time of dispatching challenger Marco Antonio Rubio (59-7-1, 51 KOs) last Saturday night in taking him out in two blistering rounds in front of 9,323 boxing fans at the StubHub Center in Carson, California.

Golovkin hit Rubio with a left hook to the head that dropped him for the 10 count. The stoppage was so sudden and unexpected that it led to many of the StubHub Center fans booing the end, because they wanted to see the fight continued.

Is Golovkin too good for his own good?

golovkin5By Bob Smith: Like many Americans, I was ignorant of a virtually unknown middleweight titlist for all of the 2000s, and all the way into late 2012. Back then, the two major fights were Juan Manuel Marquez vs. Manny Pacquiao and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. vs. Sergio Martinez, and both were great and even electrifying fights.

On you tube in early 2013, I saw a tremendous victory of this nearly unknown fighter against Gregory Proksa, a fighter who fights in a style quite similar to Sergio Martinez and who was  a top 20 middleweight.

Golovkin stops Rubio; Walters destroys Donaire in 6 rounds

golovkin888By Chris Williams: WBA Super World middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (31-0, 28 KOs) scored his 18th consecutive knockout in stopping Marco Antonio Rubio (59-7-1, 51 KOs) in the 2nd round on Saturday night at the StubHub Center, in Carson, California.

Referee Jack Reiss called a halt to the fight at 1:19 of the 2nd. Rubio tried to protest the stoppage, but Reiss was having none of it. Rubio made a mistake of staying down too long.

Golovkin hurt Rubio with a big right uppercut followed by a big left hook to the head that sent Rubio down on his back. Rubio seemed to misjudge the count, as he stayed down until the count of 9 and failed to beat the count in getting back up to his feet.

Golovkin one big fight from becoming a mega-star

golovkin9(Photo credit: Naoki Fakuda) By Dan Ambrose: WBA Super World middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (30-0, 27 KOs) needs at least one big victory over a named opponent for him to become a mega-star, according to his trainer Abel Sanchez. He feels that the casual boxing fans are starting to recognize who Golovkin is after seeing him a number of times on HBO.

The hardcore boxing fans have known about Golovkin for a considerable amount of time. But what Golovkin needs is a victory over one of the big names like Floyd Mayweather Jr, Miguel Cotto, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr or Saul “Canelo” Alvarez for him to get to the next level.

Rubio will need his A-game tonight against Golovkin!

rubio666(Photo credit: Naoki Fakuda) By Jim Dower: Things aren’t going well right now for the 34-year-old Marco Antonio Rubio (59-6-1, 51 KOs). He lost his interim World Boxing Council middleweight title yesterday when he failed to make weight for his fight against WBA Super World middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (30-0, 27 KOs) for their fight at the StubHub Center in Carson, California.

Coming in overweight by nearly 2 pounds cost Rubio a big percentage of his $450,000 earnings for the fight. That wouldn’t be so bad if he had a reasonable chance of winning the fight, but he’s an underdog and likely to wind up as Golovkin’s 18th consecutive knockout victim.

Rubio fails to make weight, will receive hefty fine

rubio888(Photo credit: Naoki Fakuda) By Dan Ambrose: Marco Antonio Rubio (59-6-1, 51 KOs) came in nearly two pounds over the weight limit for his title challenge against WBA 160 pound champion Gennady Golovkin (30-0, 27 KOs) earlier today at the weigh-in.

Rubio weighed in at 161.8 pounds, and missed the 160 pound limit by 1.81 pounds. Rubio will be fined $50,000 per pound over the limit. He had two hours to take off the weight, but he failed to do so. It’s unclear whether he made any effort or not. If so, it would be interesting to know how much weight.
