Golovkin vs. Murray: Why is Martin such an underdog?

murray322By Gerardo Granados: On February 21 at the Salle des Etoiles, Monte Carlo in Monaco, the defending WBA – IBO middleweight champion of the world Gennady “GGG” Golovkin W31 (28)-L0-D0 will try to increase his long 18 knockout streak against the favorite son of St Helens City middleweight contender Martin Murray W29 (12)-L1-D1; also, Golovkin aims to increase his winning title defense streak to an outstanding 18 consecutive knockouts.

First of all, Martin Murray took a fight against maybe the second most avoided fighter next to bantamweight king Guillermo Rigondeaux. Let us not forget that for Murray this will be the third time that he gets a shot at a major organization championship and at his last two chances he could have been declared the winner. But why is Murray such an underdog at the betting odds? Is it because we might be overlooking a solid middleweight contender giving him just a minimal chance to win?

Macklin doubts Martin Murray will beat Golovkin

murray5By Scott Gilfoid: Former Gennady Golovkin knockout victim Matthew Macklin has serious doubts whether British fighter Martin Murray (29-1-1, 12 KOs) will be able to pull off an upset of the hard hitting Golovkin on February 21st in Monte Carlo.

Macklin notes that Murray doesn’t have much in the way of punching power, and he thinks that he’ll likely go to pieces if he actually tries to win the fight instead of him just looking to survive.

Martin Murray will be Golovkin’s 20th consecutive knockout victim, says Sanchez

golovkinBy Scott Gilfoid: On February 21st, trainer Abel Sanchez expects his fighter WBA Super World middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (31-0, 28 KOs) to pick up his 20th consecutive knockout when he faces England’s Martin Murray (29-1-1, 12 KOs) in their fight in Monte Carlo.

Sanchez has a ton of respect for the huge Murray, who looks more like a super middleweight in size rather than a middleweight, but he feels that Murray will be knocked out none the less.

Sanchez says that if Murray comes to fight instead of just cover up, he’ll get knocked out quickly by Golovkin well before the 5th. But if he plays possum and hides behind his guard like he did against Sergio Martinez, then Sanchez sees the fight lasting until the 5th round.

“He’s got 19 knockouts in a row. He’ll have 20 if everything goes well on the 21st. We’re taking him [Murray] very, very serious. If Gennady disposes with him it won’t be because Murray wasn’t that,” Sanchez said via Fighthype.com.

Golovkin vs. Murray: “I have the tools to beat him,” Martin says

murray66By Scott Gilfoid: While many people in the boxing world recognize WBA Super World middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (31-0, 28 KOs) as being near super human in strength and talent, his opponent for February 21st, Martin Murray (29-1-1, 12 KOs), sees him as very human and very beatable.

Murray thinks he’s got what it takes to end Golovkin’s seven-year knockout streak and give him his first loss of his boxing career when the two of them face each other in two half weeks from now on 2/21 at the Salle des Étoiles, Monte Carlo, Monaco.

Golovkin vs. Murray: Martin is a very dangerous opponent, says Loeffler

murray64 - CopyBy Scott Gilfoid: Tom Loeffler, the promoter for WBA Super World middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (31-0, 28 KOs), sees Gennady’s next opponent Martin Murray (29-1-1, 12 KOs) as a dangerous opponent for him. Golovkin and Murray will be fighting in less than three weeks on February 21st at the Salle des Etoiles, Monte Carlo.

Murray is a huge underdog in this fight, and he’s considered mostly as just another B-level guy that Golovkin is going to mow down in this fight. The fact that Loeffler is building Murray up has me thinking the opposite about him. If Loeffler is building Murray up, it tells me that he sees him as another pushover for Golovkin to make easy work of.

Martin Murray: I’m sick of the sight of Golovkin’s face

murray5By Scott Gilfoid: #1 WBC, #5 WBA middleweight contender Martin Murray (29-1-1, 12 KOs) says he’s sick of seeing WBA Super World 160lb champion Gennady Golovkin’s face after the 32-year-old Murray taped Golovkin’s face to his heavy bag in order to see it constantly during his training for their fight on February 21st at the Salle des Étoiles, Monte Carlo, Monaco.

Apparently, Murray is using Golovkin’s face on his heavy bag for some kind of motivation purposes. Whether it will make any real difference at all when they get inside the ring is unlikely.
