Willie Monroe Jr. wants rematch against Golovkin

1-golovkin3 (11)By Dan Ambrose: #8 WBA middleweight contender Willie Monroe Jr. (19-2, 6 KOs) says he wants a rematch against IBO/WBA middleweight champ Gennady Golovkin (33-0, 30 KOs), who beat him by a 6th round knockout loss last month on May 16th in Inglewood, California.

The southpaw Monroe figures that he should be able to get a rematch against Golovkin if he defeats two top quality 160 pound contenders. Monroe has been pushed down the World Boxing Association’s top 15 ranking to No.8, so he’s going to need to defeat a couple of good middleweight contenders for him to get ranked high enough to where Golovkin will be forced to fight him again.

Golovkin-Monroe averages 1.3M viewers on HBO, 3rd highest watched bout in 2015

Image: Golovkin-Monroe averages 1.3M viewers on HBO, 3rd highest watched bout in 2015By Dan Ambrose: IBO/WBA 160 pound champion Gennady Golovkin (33-0, 30 KOs) brought in respectable numbers on HBO last Saturday for his mismatch against the light-hitting but loud-talking Willie Monroe Jr. (19-2, 6 KOs) at the Forum in Inglewood, California.

The Golovkin-Monroe fight averaged 1.338 million viewers with a peak of 1.474 million on HBO, making it the third highest viewed fight on the network this year, according to Dan Rafael. The numbers for the Golovkin vs. Monroe fight weren’t nearly as good as Saul “Canelo” Alvarez’s recent mismatch against James Kirkland, but Golovkin also hasn’t fought Floyd Mayweather Jr. in the past like Canelo has in order to make him a bigger name with casual boxing fans.

Who dares to fight Golovkin today?

1-vlcsnap-2015-05-17-05h03m54s131By Yannis Mihanos: Last Saturday night I watched for the first time Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (33-0, 30 KOs) in his 6th round knockout victory over Willie Monroe Jr. (19-2, 6 KOs) at the Forum in Inglewood, California, and I think I got a good taste of what he is about:
“Fist Power.”

In front of him was a not so easy opponent Willie Monroe Jr. with a style (moving target) not so easy to hit and handle.

Monroe: Golovkin was easy to hit

Image: Monroe: Golovkin was easy to hitBy Dan Ambrose: Willie Monroe Jr. (19-2, 6 KOs) may have lost to IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (33-0, 30 KOs) last Saturday night by a 6th round, but to listen to Monroe Jr. after the fight, you’d think he was the one that won and not Golovkin. Monroe was really patting himself on the back for his effort, and talking about how easy it was for him to land his shots against Golovkin.

Monroe, who actually quit on his feet in the 6th rather than going out on his shield, even said that he fought like a warrior and said that they would have had to kill him to get him out of the ring.

Monroe picks Canelo over Golovkin, says he’d be too fast for GGG

Image: Monroe picks Canelo over Golovkin, says he’d be too fast for GGGBy Dan Ambrose: Despite being dominated and bludgeoned into quitting on his feet in the 6th round, #2 WBA Willie Monroe Jr. (19-2, 6 KOs) says he thinks that former WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (45-1-1, 32 KOs) would defeat IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (33-0, 30 KOs) if they were to face each other right now.

Monroe picks Canelo to beat Golovkin because he feels that Canelo has the better hand speed than GGG, and he sees Canelo’s power as being very good as well. Monroe does think that Golovkin would have an edge over Miguel Cotto, at least in terms of punching power.

Sanchez: Golovkin-Monroe fight should have been stopped in 2nd round

Image: Sanchez: Golovkin-Monroe fight should have been stopped in 2nd roundBy Allan Fox: Last night boxing fans saw a mostly one-sided fight with IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (33-0, 30 KOs) stopping Willie Monroe Jr. (19-2, 6 KOs) in the 6th round at the Forum in Inglewood, California.

Monroe fought well in rounds 1, 3 and 4. Things went really bad for Monroe in the 2nd round though with him getting knocked down twice from hard power shots from Golovkin. Abel Sanchez, the trainer for Golovkin, thinks the fight should have been halted in the 2nd round when Monroe was badly hurt from a left hook from Golovkin.

Why Gennady ‘GGG’ Golovkin’s next opponent should be Erislandy Lara

Image: Why Gennady 'GGG' Golovkin's next opponent should be Erislandy LaraBy David Alexander: Last night, IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (33-0, 30 KOs) defeated and scored a TKO victory against challenger Willie Monroe Jr. (19-2, 6 KOs) in Inglewood, California. A tune up fight for GGG, the match wasn’t a surprising outcome considering Golovkin was a heavy favorite coming in. Against a slick and southpaw fighter, Golovkin handled with ease a boxer that moves around a lot and uses his movement.

Considering that Monroe Jr. isn’t in the same class as GGG, yesterday’s fight magnifying that, Golovkin ahould consider a fight against Erislandy Lara in September or November.

Golovkin destroys Monroe

Image: Golovkin destroys MonroeBy Gerardo Granados: Once I wrote an article in which many question have not been answered, back then Gennady Gennadyevich Golovkin aka GGG was practically a new face to the casual fans but now he is known and not only the Mexican fan base has already embrace him as one of his favorites. How often do the readers get to see the crowd react to a fighter the way it does with GGG?

As expected Monroe´s lack of punching power turned him into a tailor made prey for the middleweight lion king. Willie hit flush with speed punches but Gennady simply walked thru and bullied a good boxer but in did not an elite one.

Golovkin to fight next in September

Image: Golovkin to fight next in SeptemberBy Jim Dower: IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (33-0, 30 KOs) plans on getting back in the ring four months from now in September against the best available contender willing to fight him. His promoter Tom Loeffler would like to match the 33-year-old Golovkin against Floyd Mayweather Jr., Saul “Canelo” Alvarez or Miguel Cotto in September, but he realizes that the odds of getting any of those fighters in the ring with Golovkin are pretty slim.

This means that Golovkin will have to be satisfied with fighting the best guy that has a good fighting style, and who HBO will agree to televise.

Golovkin-Monroe: Did Willie want to be counted out?

Image: Golovkin-Monroe: Did Willie want to be counted out?By Jim Dower: In watching last Saturday night’s clash between challenger Willie Monroe Jr. (19-2, 6 KOs) and IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (33-0, 30 KOs), the 28-year-old Monroe looked like he was intentionally trying to get counted out in the 6th round after he was knocked down by a series of hard head shots from Golovkin. By getting up just as the referee was counting to 10, it appeared that Monroe was trying to muddy the water by putting it on the referee to count him out in a controversial fashion rather than him quitting or getting counted out on the canvas.

Instead of getting up immediately from the knockdown, Monroe waited until the count of 9 before rising to his feet. The referee Jack Reiss counted to ten just as Monroe made it to his feet.
