Donaire thinks he should have won against Rigondeaux

donaire5By Chris Williams: Former WBO super bantamweight champion Nonito Donaire (31-2, 20 KO’s) claims that WBA/WBO super bantamweight champion Guillermo Rigondeaux (12-0, 9 KO’s) didn’t do enough to beat him last Saturday night in their fight at the Radio City Music Hall in New York, New York.

Donaire lost the fight by a 12 round unanimous decision with two of the judges having the fight scored closely with Rigondeaux barely winning by the scores 114-113, 115-112 and 116-111. The sad fact of the matter is that Rigondeaux out-landed Donaire in 11 of the 12 rounds of the fight.

The only round where Donaire landed more punches was in the 10th, which was the round that Donaire knocked Rigondeaux down in. The rest of the rounds, Rigondeaux out-landed Donaire by anywhere from 3 to 15 punches.

Donaire-Rigondeaux: No Jab, No excuse

donaire888By James Le Blanc: Let me start by saying I am a big fan of Nonito Donaire. As someone from the Bay Area I make it a point to follow all boxers that come from that area. I also must say I was very disappointed with Nonito’s performance but if you are a fan of boxing and you have a number of favorite fighters, soon enough you will see them lose. What bothered me the most regarding this past weekend’s bout at New York’s Radio City Music Hall was the post fight interview and since.

A number of excuses came out of either Nonito’s mouth or his promoter’s mouth which ranged from trouble making weight, shoulder injury, overlooking Rigo, not watching tape on Rigo, not adjusting mid fight, and most importantly not using the jab.

Arum: Donaire-Rigondeaux was a close fight

rigondeaux43By Dan Ambrose: Top Rank promoter Bob Arum wasn’t exactly pouring compliments over the head of WBA super bantamweight champion Guillermo Rigondeaux (12-0, 9 KO’s) after he beat WBO super bantamweight champion Nonito Donaire (31-2, 20 KO’s) last Saturday night by a 12 round unanimous decision at the Radio City Music Hall in New York, New York.

Arum is usually all over his fighters when they win and smothering them with compliments. This time, Arum seemed subdued and was talking about how difficult it’s going to be to find fights for Rigondeaux and how he thought the fight was a close one. Arum didn’t look happy at all with Donaire losing the fight and Rigondeaux winning, even though he promotes both fighters. It almost seemed like he was making excuses for Donaire’s loss.

Nonito Donaire vs. Guillermo Rigondeaux bout, a boring one!

rigondeaux67By Juan dela Cruz: When Nonito Donaire was about to face the Cuban defector Guillermo Rigondeaux for WBO/WBA junior featherweight title unification bout, people all over the boxing world became elated as two scientific and exciting boxers will face each other to determine who the best 122-pounder there is. Finally, the best fighters in 122-pound division will finally square off.

But on April 13, 2013 at the Radio Music Hall in New York City, the much anticipated bout became a very boring one. Thanks to Guillermo Rigondeaux’s different notion of “hit, but don’t get hit” principle of the sweet science. Gone are the days when fighters will slug it out, dodging punches by moving their heads and body without back-pedaling.

Donaire to have shoulder surgery; will move up to featherweight for next fight

donaire147By Allan Fox: Former WBO super bantamweight champion Nonito Donaire may be out of action for some time, as he plans on having shoulder surgery to repair torn ligaments in his left shoulder that he says occurred around three years ago and it bothering him a lot.

In addition to that, Donaire will be spending time with his pregnant wife who is expecting their first child together. When Donaire does return to the ring in 2013, he plans on moving up to 126 to campaign as a featherweight due to him having problems making weight for the super bantamweight division.

Donaire was beaten by WBA super bantamweight champion Guillermo Rigondeaux last Saturday night by a close 12 round unanimous decision at the Radio City Music Hall in New York, New York.

Why did HBO open the Donaire-Rigondeaux show with 5-minute feature on Zou Shiming?

shiming33By Chris Williams: If you watched last night’s HBO broadcast for the Nonito Donaire vs. Guillermo Rigondeaux fight you have to wonder what HBO was doing by starting the telecast with a 5 minute feature on Chinese flyweight prospect Zou Shiming (1-0) instead of getting to what was truly important in terms of the Donaire-Rigondeaux fight.

It just seemed so badly out of place that I felt I was watching an infomercial on a product that HBO was trying to push instead of a boxing telecast. Why HBO took the time to show unnecessary footage of Shiming is the big question. I thought it was a mistake at first but then I got the impression that HBO is trying to win sell Shiming to the public.

One judge had Donaire winning 5 of the 12 rounds against Rigondeaux

donaire456By Chris Williams: It’s interesting to see the scorecards of the two judges that had former WBO super bantamweight champion Nonito Donaire (31-2, 20 KO’s) barely losing to WBA super bantamweight champion Guillermo Rigondeaux (12-0, 9 KO’s) last Saturday night at the Radio City Music Hall in New York, New York.

Judge John Stewart scored the fight 114-113 for Rigondeaux. He gave Donaire rounds 4, 5, 8, 9, 10. The other judge that scored the fight close was Tom Schreck, who scored the fight 115-112 for Rigondeaux. He gave Donaire rounds 2, 7, 10 and 11.

There’s just no way that Donaire won 5 rounds last night. I’m not sure what the judge Stewart was looking at to give Donaire rounds 4, 5, 8, 9, because those were rounds Rigondeaux clearly got the better of Donaire on scorecards.

Ward: Donaire should have boxed Rigondeaux more

donaire422By Allan Fox: Andre Ward, the WBA super middleweight champion and close friend of former WBO super bantamweight champion Nonito Donaire (31-2, 20 KO’s), thinks Donaire should have used his jab more and not loaded up as much with his shots last Saturday night in his 12 round unanimous decision loss to WBA World super bantamweight champion Guillermo Rigondeaux (12-0, 8 KO’s) in their fight in New York.

Ward said to RingTV “You can just tell Nonito was looking for one big shot. I think that Nonito could have come in behind his jab, even though he’s not hitting Rigondeaux with it. He should have just tried to touch him as a range finder.”

Mikey Garcia interested in facing Rigondeaux if he moves up to featherweight

rigondeaux64By Dan Ambrose: WBO featherweight champion Mikey Garcia (31-0, 26 KO’s), the brother of Nonito Donaire’s trainer Robert Garcia, says he’s interested in facing WBA/WBO super bantamweight champion Guillermo Rigondeaux if he’s willing to move up in weight to 126 lb. to face him.

Garcia, who is good friends with Donaire, was at the fight last night at the Radio City Music Hall in New York, New York to watch the fight.

Mikey said to Hustleboss.com “Rigondeaux can stay at 122 if he wants to, but there probably aren’t many fights there for him. So he might also decide to move up. If he wants to move to 126, I’m good to go for a fight with Rigondeaux.”

De La Hoya: Donaire should have taken the $3 million offer to fight Mares

donaire555By Allan Fox: Golden Boy Promotions president Oscar De La Hoya couldn’t resist kicking sand in the face of former WBO super bantamweight champion Nonito Donaire today after learning of his 12 round unanimous decision loss to WBA super bantamweight champion Guillermo Rigondeaux (12-0, 8 KO’s) by saying that Donaire should have accepted the huge $3 million offer made by Golden Boy to Donaire to face their fighter WBC super bantamweight champion Abner Mares.

Donaire received only $1.32 million for his fight against Rigondeaux and only has a loss to show for it. The Mares fight not only would have given Donaire a much bigger payday but it was a much better match-up for him because Mares is a come forward type of fighter like the ones that he typically does well against.
