Arum: Donaire had problems making weight for Rigondeaux fight

donaire241By Chris Williams: Nonito Donaire’s promoter Bob Arum was in fine form last night after Donaire’s 12 round unanimous decision loss to WBA super bantamweight champion Guillermo Rigondeaux (12-0, 8 KO’s) in New York. Arum explained away Donaire’s loss in part, saying that he had problems making weight for the fight.

If Arum believes Donaire lost to Rigondeaux due to him having problems making weight then he can always put his theory to a test by putting them back together in the next division at featherweight and see if it was the weight that caused Donaire to get schooled. Don’t hold your breath waiting for Arum to do that because I guarantee you he’s not going to make that fight.

Arum sees promoting Rigondeaux as a tough challenge now

rigondeaux222By Dan Ambrose: Top Rank promoter Bob Arum was less than impressed with the manner that WBA super bantamweight champion Guillermo Rigondeaux (12-0, 8 KO’s) unseated his much more popular fighter in WBO super bantamweight champion Nonito Donaire (31-2, 20 KO’s) last night in beating him by a 12 round unanimous decision in a fight that was frequently booed by the large pro-Donaire crowd from start to finish.

Arum would have liked to have seen more action from Rigondeaux because he recognizes that’s what the boxing public wants to see from their fighters.

Arum said to Yahoo Sports about Rigondeaux: “I’m 81-years-old and I’m probably going to have to do the best promoting job I’ve ever done…It was not a very engaging fight. When Rigondeaux stands and fights, the ***** has a lot of power and a lot of skill, but the running the way he does really makes it not a watchable fight. I had Donaire up by one point heading into the 11th.”

Donaire can still be a money fighter for Top Rank

donaire145By Allan Fox: Nonito Donaire (31-2, 20 KO’s) may have met his match last night in losing his WBO super bantamweight title to the faster and better skilled Cuban fighter WBA super bantamweight champion Guillermo Rigondeaux (12-0, 8 KO’s) in losing by a 12 round unanimous decision, but that doesn’t mean that Donaire can’t still be a money fighter for his promotional company Top Rank.

What it does probably mean is that his promoter Bob Arum is going to have to start being selective in the types of opponents that he puts Donaire in with if he wants him to continue to bring in the green from his huge built in Filipino fan base.

Rigondeaux’s speed and counter-punching too much for Donaire

donaire75By Allan Fox: Tonight, WBO super bantamweight champion Nonito Donaire (31-2, 20 KO’s) ran into the 122 lb. divisions fastest puncher and perhaps the best counter punching in all of boxing in WBA super bantamweight champion Guillermo Rigondeaux (12-0, 8 KO’s) in New York in losing a 12 round unanimous decision.

The outcome seemed like a forgone conclusion when Donaire came out in the 1st round and was knocked off balance by a blistering fast left hand from Rigondeaux. Donaire looked thoroughly confused when he went back to his corner after the round.

Rigondeaux dominates Donaire in 12 round decision victory

rigondeaux33By Gerardo Granados: The boxer who risked little in boxing won the fight tonight with WBA super bantamweight champion Guillermo Rigondeaux (12-0, 8 KO’s) beating WBO super bantamweight champion Nonito Donaire (31-2, 20 KO’s).

Meanwhile, the fighter that was pressuring the entire fight lost the fight with Donaire coming up empty. Maybe the boxing purist will admire this bout but could it be possible that for the majority of boxing fans it was a slow tempo with few action fight, the booing from the audience was clearly audible on TV and on the bar too.

Arum needs to be careful about matching Donaire against Rigondeaux again

donaire663By Eric Thomas: After the way that WBO super bantamweight champion Nonito Donaire (31-2, 20 KO’s) was beaten tonight by WBA super bantamweight champion Guillermo Rigondeaux (12-0, 8 KO’s) in New York, Top Rank promoter Bob Arum is going to need to need to think clearly about whether he wants to match Donaire back up with Rigondeaux again so that he can try and avenge his loss.

Rigondeaux beat Donaire by a 12 round unanimous decision tonight by the scores of 114-113, 115-112 and 116-111. I think it’s safe to say that the boxing public saw the fight closer to the 116-111 score.

Donaire loses to Rigondeaux, then makes excuses afterwards

donaire#55By Dan Ambrose: WBO super bantamweight champion Nonito Donaire (31-2, 20 KO’s) was totally out of his class tonight in losing by a 12 round unanimous decision to WBA super bantamweight champion Guillermo Rigondeaux (12-0, 8 KO’s) at the Radio City Music Hall in New York, New York.

To some boxing fans the fight was close, but most fans likely viewed it as a one-sided fight from start to finish with the exception of the 10th round when Donaire scored a flash knockdown. The final scores were 114-113, 115-112 and 116-111.

Rigondeaux decisions Donaire

donaire1113By James Sexton: Firstly, I would like to say I thoroughly enjoyed watching Nonito Donaire vs. Guillermo Rigondeaux fight tonight in which Rigondeaux defeated Donaire by a 12 round unanimous decision at the Radio City Music Hall in New York, New York. I believe the judges were a little off as I had the fight more in Rigo’s favor. However, the result was a unanimous decision for Rigondeaux and that’s exactly what it should have been. I am pleased that Rigondeaux won so decisively that he could not be cheated.

After doing a little after match reading I have heard that Donaire ‘could not do anything’ as Rigo was ‘running’ it reminded me a lot about what I heard from anti-mayweather fans earlier in his career as he would use footwork and quick, precise punching to win rounds rather than stand and exchange with his opponents.

Rigondeaux schools Donaire

donaire111By Chris Williams: WBA super bantamweight champion Guillermo Rigondeaux (12-0, 8 KO’s) easily defeated WBO super bantamweight champion Nonito Donaire (31-2, 20 KO’s) by an easy 12 round unanimous decision at the Radio City Music Hall in New York, New York. The final judges scores were 114-113, 115-112, and 116-111.

Donaire was dominated in the first 9 rounds and then scored a knockdown in the 10th round.Rigondeaux then came back and resumed his dominance in easily winning rounds 11 and 12.

The judges scores were a total joke. The only score that was Reasonably close to what actually happened in the ring was the 116-111. Donaire was never in the fight and was missing all night long and looking tentative and scared. He was too slow, too amateurish and too out of league.

Rigondeaux easily defeats Donaire

donaire999By Jim Dower: WBO super bantamweight champion Nonito Donaire (31-2, 20 KO’s), the 2012 Fighter of the Year, finally met his match in WBA World super bantamweight champion Guillermo Rigondeaux (12-0, 8 KO’s) tonight in Donaire losing his WBO title by a 12 round unanimous decision by the scores of 114-113, 116-111.

HBO unofficial scorer Harold Lederman scored the fight 118-109 for Rigondeaux, and I personally scored it 117-110 for Rigondeaux. Donaire had one good round in the 10th when he knocked Rigondeaux down, but he didn’t hurt him.

Rigondeaux got back up and continued to put on a boxing clinic in beating Donaire to the punch with his much faster hands, and paying him back each time Donaire would land anything. Donaire paid for every shot he landed in the fight because he was either countered immediately by Rigondeaux or he’d get tagged with two or three hard shots moments later.
